  • Detailed instructions for tying a Wood Special.
    Recipe:
    Hook: 4X-long streamer hook (here, a Dai-Riki 700), size 8.
    Thread: UTC 70 Denier, black.
    Rib: Gold/silver Mylar tinsel, small.
    Tail: Golden pheasant crest tippets.
    Body: Ultra Chenille, medium, fluorescent orange.
    Wing: Wood duck flank feather.
    Hackle: Grizzly hen feather.

    Don’t forget to tell folks that the snipped off tip of the soft hackle makes a great tool to clean out the eyehole.
    Should you get a bit heavy- handed and get cement or UV resin in the eye, just push the feathers cut stem tip through the eye and pull it through to clean it out.

    Great video as always Tim! I’m a native Mainer and I’ve had a lot of success using this fly for both Brook Trout and Landlocked Salmon.

    Very similar to an old pattern here in colorado...sheep creek...just a few different materials

    I personally think it fishes better with either a smaller diameter rib material like oval tinsel or none at all. imho
