It's not a big deal, except that your area seems to have quite a number of words that are pronounced significantly incorrectly compared to most of the USA/Canada, etc.

Since before we landed on the moon, there have been hundreds of military projects that were planned by various people, but almost all of those have been deemed either impossible because of weight or uneconomical. With starship, all of those projects are back on the table, and that includes orbital dropships, tungsten rod bunker busters, resupply missions for cut off troops, suborbital drone swarm deployment and many more, some classified some are not. What Space Force wants to do now, is to have their own fleet of starships that they will maintain and customize without needing to involve SpaceX staff and to keep it secret. This is very common thing to do where military purchases civilian technology but they are handling maintenance and upgrades by themselves, and that includes things like Air force one, which is a civilian boeing 747 but had a lot of modifications made and is being maintained by air force.

I could see DoD wanting the ability to get 100+ tons of “supplies” to anywhere on the planet in less than an hour. Yes, it would have humanitarian uses, but it would be much more useful in supporting emergency remote ops in “difficult” regions. It would also send quite a message to the other side when massive rockets start dropping from the sky like a scene out of “War of the Worlds.”

  • @rkr9861

Important to remember that NRO is under the purview of DOD, as is X-37B which is directly under Space Force. Falcon and Falcon Heavy have already been used to launch these. I see no reason why Starship wouldn't be involved in other DoD missions in the future.

One thing about the launch complex seldom mentioned is that the whole OLM and tank farm are prototypes. They are using the same iterative process to determine what works, what needs to work better, and how to get a complex that can launch weekly or even daily.
The ground facilities are an order of magnitude more complex, more expensive and more important than getting to space.

I can see two possibilities, either the government wants to take control from SpaceX by using the pentagon or the pentagon sees a resource that they a use for in the future as a contractor. The second is more likely or perhaps somewhere in between. With them involved, we may see less resistance and delays. On a side note, when you list metric and SAE values place the text for it on the screen simultaneously instead of separate. As a technician, I am used to looking at the one that applies to what I am doing and the tooling I am using and ignoring the other, this is easier when both are there at the same time.

The DOD has had it's eyes on Starship since well before the first launch. Any internet BS about friction between NASA and SpaceX, "spiteful" FAA delays or unnecessary static from ANY federal agency IS CLICKBAIT for the simple minded. The DOD isn't going to "takeover" SpaceX any more than they've taken over General Dynamics, Boeing, or Lockheed Martin. The US government isn't the CCP with ownership on all "private" companies. SpaceX was and is just another contractor for Uncle Sam!!!

Commercial airliners are used in a military program called CRAF, Civil Reserve Air Fleet, to provide DOD with commercial airliners to augment military airlift resources when needed during peacetime and wartime emergencies. The military already has the process and procedures established. So adding Starship vehicles to this mission will not be either unprecedented or difficult once the Starship becomes an in production space vehicle program.

Long time. In Florida is way more too important infrastructure for space program, so testing, especially recovery attempts would be very problematic. Florida will be online after Starship will be proven to be reliable.
It CAN be faster if in Florida will be initially launched only disposable versions (considering price tag of Starship, it's not impossible as a stopgap solution IF there will be market for that large launchers).

@@kstricl or, wouldn’t be an excellent use given that a C17 or C5 would be a much more cost efficient and time sensitive option. Not only can they carry 70+ and 130+ tonnes of cargo, but can generally deploy that cargo without the need to land. Point to point starship sounds great until you actually think about the practicalities involved.

However, they will absolutely reserve the right to either purchase Starship missions for US military use...or maybe even asserting the right to co-opt its capabilities when and where they feel it necessary. Clickbait title. Renting Starships or even launch infrastructure is not 'taking over'. Using Starship for rapid military or humanitarian deliveries sounds cool, but is not the game changer it is touted as. You can't practically land a Starship at an unimproved landing site, and if you have built the infrastructure beforehand, why not just use that lift capacity to deliver the supplies directly? And launching the Starship back to it's origin site is an even bigger issue.

The US military already has similar business models in place with US flagged maritime and airline businesses. For the most part, it equates to "on call" pay for the right to commandeer a percentage of the fleet. As for the classified operations the most likely outcome is that they will pay SpaceX to build a tower and integration facility on the Space Force side of the cape and then operate it themselves. They can throw a tarp over the secret sauce if they ever need to have an unclassed SpaceX tech come in to fix something. (Been there, done that, had my t-shirt confiscated.)

I would think that Musk had already thought about building and developing a version of Starship and it's boosters for the US Space Force. It's possible that would be something that develops in the near future as Starship begins to come on line as a fully functioning Spaceship. Many aerospace firms had commercial and military divisions so Space X could also do that too.

Allowing DOD staff to take over every aspect of a Starship launch, excluding SpaceX personnel might not be a good idea. The DOD staff would need to be trained and given all the experience which SpaceX's staff already have under the belt. And if things go wrong - who would get the blame?

  • @DJ-bh1ju

Of course Starship should be used for military missions if necessary. Every one of our major adversaries - China, Russia, North Korea, Iran... every bit of their space programs are under the control of their military. It would be suicidal for the US to not take advantage of every tool at hand when national and world survival is at stake.

Proton has already been used by Russia.
    How about Baryon?
Boson? That doesn’t sound good. 😄
Higgs? It’s related to mass, right? For a massive rocket. But doesn’t sound right for a rocket name.
Positron Rocket would sound cool and exotic.

Fueds over free and open International waters wont be so sensitive i think. Thats a lot of cargo being shipped in much faster without the worry of someone shooting a cruise missile at your cargo.

I can't picture in my head a measurement of a meter much less a liter but You say miles or gallons ounces and tons I know what is being talked about. Other websites (and I'm sure they know who they are) leave us with metrics that I don't understand and thus I can be found checking online conversion sites. Thank You You Rock!

@@kerringautrey1375Bob Watkins does however he hasn’t been in a school for 60 years so it’s a silly argument on his part.
Anyway. If someone says meters and you want feet multiply x3 for a close approximation. If you get feet and want meters then you /3.
@Bob…The rest of the world doesn’t care that Americans don’t use metric directly. The world does however care that Americans can’t multiply or divide by 3 and will absolutely die on that hill for reasons the rest of the western world will never understand. The only reason you can’t covert it intuitively is one, you aren’t used to it. Fair. Second, you are stubborn. Not as forgivable.
Feet are good for civilian things involving distances up to 500’ or so. They suck for everything else. For science and aerospace, imperial is almost always the wrong answer.

This is what the US should've been doing prior to the Ukraine War, so that you never had a private business being asked by a foreign military power to assist them in a War against a nuclear power. There will obviously be missions where having SpaceX be the owner of the vehicle could potentially involve them in an actual conflict, or also making split second decisions that effect the country. Can't have that (and anyone complaining about SpaceX/Ukraine/Starlink are idiots), you do NOT want a private business doing these things and potentially pulling the US into a War.
