Hi, I was going through measures creation. Initially the measures were created in Items and Sales table. However later we see them all clubbed under Measures table. But the video did not show how it was done. Can you explain that once. Is it done by properties

Sir, Thank you very much for this great video on Power BI. I am almost a beginner in this journey as I transitioned my career to this last year and this video is very much helpful in my journey. I have been watching this video from last couple of weeks and just finished 18:07:03 Create Dimension from a Single Table. I have few questions on this topic. The dimension tables were created using Reference instead of Duplicating the query. After creating the dimension tables the repetitive columns were not deleted from fact table which were moved to dimension table. Also, due to usage of Reference instead of Duplicate query option, we are unable to remove redundant data from base file as it affects all Referenced queries. Does this method serve the purpose of data normalization of removing redundant and repetitive data from the model?The pbix file size increased after following this method of creating dimension tables. It would be great if you clarify my queries. Thank you!

I truly appreciate your detailed question, and I’ll address your concerns below: Using Reference vs. Duplicate Queries: I used the Reference option instead of Duplicate to create dimensions and facts because referencing ensures we don't duplicate the source data, which can reduce data loading from the source and improve performance. However, as you mentioned, changes to the original table impact all referenced queries, which is why I avoid modifying the base table directly. Removing Redundant Columns: After creating dimension tables, it is indeed good practice to remove redundant columns from the fact table (e.g., Brand, Category). These columns are now part of the dimension tables and should not be repeated in the fact table. However, these changes should only be made to the fact table, not the original table, to maintain flexibility. Creating Facts with Dimension Keys: When creating the fact table, instead of referencing the base table directly, I suggest using "Add as New Query" (once per fact table) to start building the fact table. From there, you can progressively merge it with the dimension keys. This ensures that your fact table contains only the required information while keeping the original table intact. Impact on PBIX File Size: If you notice an increase in the PBIX file size, it could be due to retaining redundant data in both the fact and dimension tables. To normalize your data model: Ensure columns like Brand, Category, and other attributes in the dimensions are removed from the fact table. Retain only the necessary keys in the fact table to link to the dimensions. Data Normalization in Power BI: This method supports data normalization principles by separating repetitive attributes (dimensions) from transactional data (fact table). While it requires some manual steps to clean up redundant data from the fact table, it creates a more efficient and scalable model. I hope this clarifies your concerns! I am trying to create a dashboard from an MS Excel spreadsheet to report out on baseline, planned and actual spend amounts by month in one visual. Baseline Amount and Planned Amount are associated with Baseline Date and Actual Spend Amount is associated with a Actual Spend Date. The month Actual Spend occurs is not always the same as the Baseline and Planned month. I want to show all 3 amounts by month in the same chart. Can you direct me on how to accomplish this, please?
It they are coming from different tables, you can join them with common date table and plot it against the column of date table. If data analytics genuinely interests you, it can be a great move. Your background in networking might actually give you an edge in understanding how data flows and how systems connect. I’d suggest starting with foundational skills like Excel, SQL, and maybe a bit of Python also along with deeper into tools like Power BI. Look for free resources or structured online courses to get comfortable with the basics. the first 1 hour was very good interactive . and at the 2 nd hour , i felt it was going too detailed and lost track . I slept on the chair. this is good for complete noob. but people who already have worked on dashboards and report development will feel to yawn .more over there is no tracking (Index) of topics. keep scrolling horizontally in case you loose your track.The countless ads in between easily gets you distracted and good luck if anyone can follow .

Hi, I was going through measures creation. Initially the measures were created in Items and Sales table. However later we see them all clubbed under Measures table. But the video did not show how it was done. Can you explain that once. Is it done by properties

Sir, Thank you very much for this great video on Power BI. I am almost a beginner in this journey as I transitioned my career to this last year and this video is very much helpful in my journey. I have been watching this video from last couple of weeks and just finished 18:07:03 Create Dimension from a Single Table. I have few questions on this topic. The dimension tables were created using Reference instead of Duplicating the query. After creating the dimension tables the repetitive columns were not deleted from fact table which were moved to dimension table. Also, due to usage of Reference instead of Duplicate query option, we are unable to remove redundant data from base file as it affects all Referenced queries. Does this method serve the purpose of data normalization of removing redundant and repetitive data from the model?The pbix file size increased after following this method of creating dimension tables. It would be great if you clarify my queries. Thank you!

Using Reference vs. Duplicate Queries:
I used the Reference option instead of Duplicate to create dimensions and facts because referencing ensures we don't duplicate the source data, which can reduce data loading from the source and improve performance. However, as you mentioned, changes to the original table impact all referenced queries, which is why I avoid modifying the base table directly.
Removing Redundant Columns:
After creating dimension tables, it is indeed good practice to remove redundant columns from the fact table (e.g., Brand, Category). These columns are now part of the dimension tables and should not be repeated in the fact table. However, these changes should only be made to the fact table, not the original table, to maintain flexibility.
Creating Facts with Dimension Keys:
When creating the fact table, instead of referencing the base table directly, I suggest using "Add as New Query" (once per fact table) to start building the fact table. From there, you can progressively merge it with the dimension keys. This ensures that your fact table contains only the required information while keeping the original table intact.
Impact on PBIX File Size:
If you notice an increase in the PBIX file size, it could be due to retaining redundant data in both the fact and dimension tables. To normalize your data model:
Ensure columns like Brand, Category, and other attributes in the dimensions are removed from the fact table.
Retain only the necessary keys in the fact table to link to the dimensions.
Data Normalization in Power BI:
This method supports data normalization principles by separating repetitive attributes (dimensions) from transactional data (fact table). While it requires some manual steps to clean up redundant data from the fact table, it creates a more efficient and scalable model.

I am trying to create a dashboard from an MS Excel spreadsheet to report out on baseline, planned and actual spend amounts by month in one visual. Baseline Amount and Planned Amount are associated with Baseline Date and Actual Spend Amount is associated with a Actual Spend Date. The month Actual Spend occurs is not always the same as the Baseline and Planned month. I want to show all 3 amounts by month in the same chart. Can you direct me on how to accomplish this, please?
It they are coming from different tables, you can join them with common date table and plot it against the column of date table. If they are from same table, you can have one active and another inactive join and then you can use userelationship to activate the inactive join

If data analytics genuinely interests you, it can be a great move. Your background in networking might actually give you an edge in understanding how data flows and how systems connect. I’d suggest starting with foundational skills like Excel, SQL, and maybe a bit of Python also along with deeper into tools like Power BI. Look for free resources or structured online courses to get comfortable with the basics.

I’ve been in the data analytics world, spending six years at Oracle and ten years as an entrepreneur. the first 1 hour was very good interactive . and at the 2 nd hour , i felt it was going too detailed and lost track . I slept on the chair. this is good for complete noob. but people who already have worked on dashboards and report development will feel to yawn .more over there is no tracking (Index) of topics. keep scrolling horizontally in case you loose your track.The countless ads in between easily gets you distracted and good luck if anyone can follow .

After the initial introduction, I understand that the deeper dive into visuals and concepts may seem detailed for those with experience. However, since this is a comprehensive course, I needed to cover these areas in detail to ensure beginners get a solid foundation.
I also noticed that the chapters weren’t visible in the video, although they were showing in private mode. I've worked on fixing this, and I’m hopeful that the chapters are now visible throughout the video. You should be able to find all 100 chapters in the description to jump between sections. I hope this makes it easier to navigate and find the topics that are most relevant to you.
