Still they are using their money to give people opportunity to take it next level. What we will do in the next 5 years will be crazy. I don't know about you but I would like to take sports and other things to the next level. With the wings I got from my red bull
lorenzo44554 Of course it is marketing but in fairness to Red Bull, when they could not afford to do more they sponsored Olympic sailors in the early 90s. At the time I did not even know what Red Bull was! So I agree that they deserve credit for doing something more meaningful and exciting then just taking adds at the Super Bowl.
If a fraction of the companies that exist had a fraction of the amount of fun that red bull does MILLIONS of people would be having a BLAST like these sailors do. I agree Red Bull is an awesome company! I don't like the taste and go out of my way to buy some red bull because I enjoy the entertainment they provide. Thank you Red Bull I will be a loyal follower. To the full time dude living in poverty, yes it sucks. You won't ever get to do this shit. BUT you can drive a shifter kart. Do a search on that shit man!! Balls out fun on a BUDG. I learned how to swing a wrench, did some CL surfing, bought an old shifter chassis, then an old Honda 125 shifter engine and put all the shit together. I'm talking OMG speed and G's. Fk super cars those things are for jokers. Shifter karts are crazy fun and cheap.
This is like F1 car racing, one of the most extreme racing competition. But not the only. Obviously must be in the future. This is the most relevant progress in sailing technology.
The boat on the far right at 0:40 is a hobie 16 and they are one of the biggest sailing classes in the world. The australian nationals will be just after christmas I will be uploading a video for it.
That's jut so extreme it hurts my head. As a skiff sailor I'm into fairly extreme sailing but a lightweight foiling cat just burns my head completely. Big Props to those that make it. Luv and Peace.
1:30 "Everybody can join in, can enter." Is that a bad joke? Only those with very deep pockets "can join in, can enter." It looks like fun and I would love to join in, but I sure as shit cannot afford this despite working full time. Let's be realistic, only the most privileged and fortunate youngsters in this world can afford to compete.
"Head out of the boat" and communication between both the crew on one boat and between the various boats is the simplest method. Plus, to get to this level of racing you need quite a large amount of experience.
Charles Atkinson Thank you for letting me know! It is too bad new people can't experience the racing. Do you think they would have something entry-level where I could try it out? It must be thrilling!
Kaushal Pandya That depends on your location. I would recommend trying to find yacht clubs in your area and see what they offer, that way you can meet new people while learning. I recommend people who are willing to answer a lot of questions (most passionate sailors will go on for hours on any subject :D) -- that's the main thing I've found to be helpful. Making mistakes and asking questions is what got me from zero experience to loving crewing in a few days! Stay determined -- there will be unpleasant days. That being said, even in chilling rain and lots of chop, I always wind up grinning. Good luck! If you want me to help find good locations in your area, feel free to PM me.
Kaushal Pandya If you want to sail catamaran hobie cat 16 is a good boat to start with. It's quite easy to control and can be found in most yacht clubs.
Looks like an absolute blast to sail these boats. But at those speeds and in close quarters during a race, and surrounded by complex hardware, I do hope no one is killed.
I sailed a Rave for a few years.... have to have perfect conditions.... wind above 15 knots but not higher than 25 knots..... waves less than 2 feet or the bow catches and plunges.... also have to be careful not to hit anything or the foil will be damaged.... not as much fun as it looks.... I prefer a Corsair Trimaran....
Also come to Cyprus since we have the athletic sailors already flying one hull on hobie cats 15' & 16'... so to pick up this model with foils and compete in races would be straight forward for us.... Nice Boats & Event Program...
Hallo Jungs: 2min 45 - Red Bull verleiht Flügel! Leider zu früh geschnitten ... hoffe war da war genug Kevlar im Helm ..... However, ... viel Glück mit der neuen Serie! LG CC
No. This is NOT the furture of sailing, this is extremely well engeneered present. The Future is foiling without a foil - using ground effect - and lift off above that lethargic Element! I'm not an engeneer so I have no chance to calculate how to create enough power to lift off a hull that's designed for flying through the air - not for floating in water - but once this problem is solved, the rest will not be a big problem anymore... ;) The Prototype of a ground effect sailing vehicle will be the first vehicle in history that really deserves the Name "AIRSHIP 1"
Jonathan Battle If they're anything like other foiling boats (foiling moths in particular) then there are usually movable control surfaces on a horizontal "T" fin on the rudders (like the elevators on an aircraft). On a moth, they're controlled by twisting the tiller extension (the steering stick the helmsman is always holding).
Jonathan Battle Actually, having said that about tiller extensions - I was watching a video the other day about the new Foiling A class catamarans, and they seem to have gone for a system where the centreboards (those two L or J shaped things the boat is foiling on) can be tilted back and forward with a control line to adjust the pitch - so that could be what they've done on this class of boat too.
+Daniel Scott Its a combination of the two. changing the pitch of the dagger foil (j-shaped thing) and adjusting the control surface on the "upside down T shaped" rudder.
+Vinnie Ice Gallagher Thanks for the info! :) I guess these are a one-design class and all the boats in the competition are identical? (i.e. no different setups on different boats to suit different crews' tastes?). How does the rudder + centreboard attitude control thing work? Does the crew adjust the centreboard and the helm work the trim tabs on the rudder? - or are they somehow linked together?
THAT is the most risky sailing I have ever seen and the boats certainly cannot race for any length of time....still like the Vendee Globe....now there's a race.

The answer to the question is yes and no... Hydra foils are far to unstable to be sailed long distance... The traditional mono hull is been the standby boat for thousands of years...... nothing really changes that. Futuristic and fast it is......... and thats about it.
Yes and no, iT is just how you sail the boat i mean, i know the owners of nacra f20 fcs and the DNA F1 a cat, they say the boat can be hard to sail and very ease to sail
The wing (fins) are capable of producing enough lift for several reasons. 1: The mass of the boat is kept to a minimum so the lifting force required is reduced. 2: The boats have to travel at relatively high speeds to achieve the levels of lift seen in the video. 3: perhaps the most important, the wing is travelling through a fluid 1000 times denser than air and can be 1000 times smaller....kinda :L
Its a good thing to us sailors. We actually earn a little pocket cash that way. One "wheel" where the rope travels (no more than 0.5-1 cm radius) can already cost you around 60€. Stuff break all the time and it all goes straight out or our pockets. Its a very expensive sport and we appreciate some sponsors and stuff.

so other people like us can go sail on the old boat that we have (I sail on 470 jean morin from 1967 )
Laen Eerdnik .. I don't understand your point. do you want them to give you a boat and a crew for free?
Audfile I don't want shit. I'm just calling them on a lie.
Laen Eerdnik you're taking it waaaaaay to literal. I don't think he was teasing you.

How do they avoid running into each other

When do you invite the Old gerenetion

Ja! Gefunden, wusste noch nicht! Sehen uns in Malcesine dann!
2:44 wow
Hallo, sehen wir vielleicht am Gardasee? Ciao!
this is extremely cool
wow !.. .i wanna do it now !!...saling-foiling... amazing !.. a new speedy sailing era ! :)

It sounds fun!

i really only sail on a picco, dont have the money for a better one tho i do love the picco
Extraordinaire
It´s great !
any chance these will come to New Zealand
Laird Hamilton have been using hydro foils in his surf board, to surf bigger and faster waves in the ocean, he's been doing it for some time now.
Sailors have been foiling for some time now as well :)
Hey. One Question. ;-)
--- How can we enter and sign in to this competition for Denmark with my Team ??? ---
awesome!
It works!

Are the hulls based on tornado Class?
Hello! I live in Russia and would like to take part in the opening event on September 25-27 in St. Petersburg.Do I need to register anywhere ?

When your here 5 years later and this is quite normal now
Hydrofoils are very ancient, really older than five years.
Fantastique
im a senior if i want to sail them i will sail and conquer !!
The wipeouts on these must be epic
This is very impressive, but I sail to relax, not to be flung through the air at 36 knots ;)
If aliens landed on earth, they’d see those things coming at them, and yell, “retreat!”
i love
Fun stuff. Miss hobbie cat sailing. Foiling is the next level.
How can we apply?
Give a lot of $$$ or €€€ to ze Red Bull and we might consider :D
bring it to new zealand! but one caveat - please have emergency releases on the trapeze otherwise I can see some serious injuries in the future.
Even with 8 tries, it won't get to New Zealand...hehehe

is it still sailing ?
WAU..!!!
how do they fly ???????

but fascinating speed pictures for speed junkies
так вот ты какой "летучий голландец " )))

Jack flying pirate ship in peter pan is real
I sail (and cruised long distance) to relax so this stuff and "racing" a SNAILboat is my vision of hell.
I guess a racing kitesurf of windsurf is still faster then these things. Anywaty good luck to the designer and sailors for this new class.
finally caught up with what the international moth class has been doing for 15 years? 20 years? foils are not new.
what happen at 2:45?
