I would love to have a 650 snow pro cat I raced against the merc 340 twister. They where as fast as the 440 they flew. But I’m a Cat man I wouldn’t turn down a merc sno twister either. Love them old sno pros brings back great memories
This sure brings back memories. The 77 "Z", my fave non ifs oval Arctic. This was one of many promo flicks that Arctic provided dealers in big super 8 film cassettes. This one got the most plays in our showroom.
I believe the Cats and the Mercs were Kohler power where was Polaris, they would be a force in 77, by 78 Skidoo had their act together, it was a great era for snowmobile racing!
Suzuki didn’t have time to come up with a 250 or 340 race engine for production until the 1977 Z oval sleds were built. So Cat bought the engines from Kohler for the one sled for the one year. Which pissed off Mercury at the time. Merc felt like they had been double crossed by Kohler. They started working on their own engine for 1977 but Brunswick killed off the Merc sled program . Sad day….
The factory sno pro sleds were all hand built prototypes for 1976 and all powered by extremely limited build Suzuki LC twins in. 250/340/440 sizes. The 1976 Z was a factory built oval sled for box stock racing. 250 Kohler and 440 Suzuki. No 340 made that year for ovals. What confuses people is the 1977 Z was the production version of the 1976 Sno Pro. So they look a lot alike on the outside. Hey it’s been 48 years. lol. And the 77 was made with all three sizes of Suzuki motors .
In the stock classes they did. The pro classes were ruled by the factories. Arctic Cat and Polaris in the late 70s, then Scorpion dominated a couple of seasons I. The hands of Brad Hulings before he was lured to Ski-doo.
