The main hit from the record The Heat of The Moment was an apology letter to the singer’s girlfriend and it actually started as a country song but cooler heads prevailed and it became the singalong rocker of 1982. A founding member and co writer of the song tells the story personally next on Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists reveal rare stories about their biggest songs, along with fascinating insight about their careers. On this installment of Revelations, we sit down with a synth legend who was a valuable contributor to the soundtrack of the 80s as a key member of the Buggles who’s Video Killed the Radio Star with he co wrote ignited the MTV revolution. He was also a member of Yes and then helped form the early 80s rock supergroup Asia. It’s synth pioneer … Geoff Downes. Along with former King Crimson singer and bassist John Wetton, Yes Guitarist Steve Howe, Emerson Lake and Palmer drummer Carl Palmer Geoff Downes formed the all star band that ruled the charts in 1982. Asia’s debut album produced by Mike Stone who had just come from helping produce Journey Escape would put he band in the pole position in one of the most competitive years on record where Paul McCartney, Men At Work, Fleetwood Mac, the Go Gos, Foreigner and ACDC were battling it out on the album charts.
Asia came out on top due to the strength of the 1-2 punch of their first 2 singles the Heat of the Moment and Only Time Will Tell. The Heat of the Moment packed the fire Wetton and Downes wrote this song, which is about a passionate relationship between a young couple, who wonder what will happen when they get older. This was a song that late singer John Wetton said was about saying he was sorry. A rarity in the early 80s..outside of a band like Chicago… Saying you were sorry in a rock song by a rock band was not common place…. John Wetton would say at one time.
"The whole song is just an apology," "I hold my hand out and I got it wrong. I never meant it to be like that. I didn't want it to be like that. And so I'm sorry.” John Wetton wasn’t worried about trying to be cool or manly when he wrote the song, he was actually trying to be vulnerable in the song another first for that time…Wetton wrote it for his real girlfriend Jill, who he would soon marry. - Розваги

Toto
Traveling Wilburys
New Barbarians
The Firm
Traveling Wilburys
Cream
This album was basically responsible for the comeback of Yes with “90125”in 1983. “Only Time Will Tell” is such a great song, and doesn’t get enough airplay today.
Geoff Downes and John Wetton certainly deserve more acclaim than they're typically given.
The first riff ever learned on guitar with power cords was heat of the moment at 8-years old. (All because I overheard a neighbor 10 houses away jamming with a band outside.. finally I can play power chords in addition to Cowboy chords!)
Anyway, am a big fan of King Crimson and the John Wetton era of the band. So glad that you mention his legacy beyond Asia here. As they would say in England, and I'm in Phoenix, CHEERS!
My God, looking at the graphic of the Top 20 Albums of 1982 really makes you realize how GREAT the music was! We had no idea how good we had it. ASIA's debut album was fantastic. I wore out both the album and tape from repeated playing.
I’ve said it countless times and will say it once again: You don’t know what you got til it’s gone.
100% Agree. At the time, I thought that having such awesome artists and fantastic music charting was "normal". Now we know it wasn't. We were lucky to live those times.
And we thought it will last forever
It was a great time to be young.
Me too!!!!
Asia is one of the best bands to come out of the 80s! I love Only Time Will Tell!
That is my favorite song of theirs.
@@Code.Name.V Same.
Add me to the list, Only Time Will Tell is also my favorite!
Great song!
So good!
I remember when Asia burst onto the music scene in 1982. I absolutely loved "The Heat Of The Moment" and bought their album. It also contained the excellent "Only Time Will Tell". The following year they had another top 10 hit, "Don' t Cry". It's a shame their success didn't last much longer but they did create great music during that time-frame.
Both great songs. Thanks Stephen!
Don’t Cry is one of the songs on my playlist. I love Asia and their music.
"Sole Survivor" is another great one with an atypical time signature.
I loved Don’t Cry.
@@ProfessorofRock I hope you'll get Geoff Downes back on your show to talk about the book, "John Wetton: An Extraordinary Life," for which he was the primary driver -gathering a ton of amazing photos and stories from John's family and esteemed colleagues.
Steve Howe is my favorite guitarist. And the wonky, purposefully jank solo at the end of Heat of the Moment is so wonderful!
One of my favorite endings to a song ever.
Asia has definitely become one of my favorite bands ever. Just an amazing band in the making when you take into account the members' unique histories.
So true. Thanks my friend.
@@ProfessorofRock Always a pleasure my man
They all were part of classic bands, ain’t that somethin?
TOURING THIS YEAR
ASIA HAD TO OR THREE GOOD SONGS.
The opening guitar gets me every time. “Heat of The Moment” starts off so powerful, but turns melodic. I remember it was everywhere when it came out.
It's soooooo Classic!
The melodies are so sweet all the way through. 😊
"Only Time Will Tell" is a huge favorite of mine - even after all this time, I can listen to it over and over!
Thanks Connie!
Another gut punch song from them.
This album was a big part of the soundtrack of the summer before I entered grade 8. It was also right about the same time I decided I wanted to be in a band and picked up the bass, and later the guitar. 40+ years later, I'm still playing both, writing and recording (and even selling!) my own music, and still a fan of Asia, especially John Wetton. What an amazing voice, amazing bassist and phenominal songwriter. RIP John you are sadly missed.
That’s incredible!
Back in 1975, two things happened on the same day: I got stoned for the very first time and my brother played 3 albums that changed my life. Yessongs by YES, Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends by Emerson Lake And Palmer and Solar Fire by Manfred Mann. Suffice to say that my head exploded (almost literally when I heard Rick Wakemans keyboard solo with the explosions at the end on Yessongs) joyfully that day. I had been listening to bubble gum pop and when I listened to those albums my life changed forever. I still have them in my regular music rotation on the MP3 player and have seen Yes at least 5 times live, ELP once and Manfred Mann at least twice. Very shortly there-after, I discovered two woman and a man who changed my life in an entirely different way. Nina Hagen, Lena Lovich and Klaus Nomi. All 3 had very, very unique voices that instantly made me love them. I know that for Nina, Lena and Klaus, many, many, many people will say "what the F is this stuff" but, their voices are so unique that I instantly fell in love with them all. Could you consider doing some video's on the more obscure new wave stuff?
Absolutely, ASIA was a outstanding group of seasoned professionals. And then the greatest music of the early 1980s took hold with the FM rock stations and ASIA was a large contributor.
Between their first two albums, there isn't a mediocre song, much less a bad song. Currently working my way through their discography, so the timing of this episode is perfect.
Congratulations, psychic!
ASIA IS TOURING THIS YEAR
I remember listening to ASIA on the bus radio 9th grade. Last year to ride... was so happy to drive. But looking back now. It's almost bitter sweet ..
One of my friends really got into Asia in the early 90's. He studied their history & bought all of their music. I bought their "Then & Now" CD back then. My favorite is "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes." It's basically a forgotten power ballad from the 80's. On the "Now" side, they had two great ballads: "Prayin' 4 A Miracle" and "Am I In Love." Those songs bring me back to the 90's, during a much better time in my life.
“The Smile Has Left Your Eyes” should have been a big hit. What a beautiful, emotional song.
I agree. Amazing song.
Another nostalgic classic. I remember buying the album and loving the cover art. The music sounded so rich and deep to me on the big Hitachi stereo system. My friends and I always talked about making a Dungeons and Dragons adventure with that awesome serpent but never did. What we did do was crank it up at my friend's house when his parents were gone and practice Shorin-Ryu karate to it in the front yard. I'm glad there weren't cameras in everyone's hand when I was 14.
Thanks for listening!
While I like slaying dragons, I would have to leave that one alone. Instead, I would pull out my bass and start jamming(yes, my D&D character carries a bass), and the dragon would think I was John Wetton and leave me alone.
Also, you were less likely to get reprimanded by somebody’s mama because they read about a stranger kidnapping a baby. You were with your friends and all was fine.
I was at my tax accountant's office, today, and he was playing an 80s mix that included Asia's Heat of the Moment. He, his wife, and I got into a long discussion about our musical influences (we were all mostly the same age) and ended up taking the chat on to dinner. Great discussion and I felt very nostalgic. Imagine my delight when I saw today's episode was on the very group that started our discussion. I recommended this channel to both of them and mentioned some of my favorite episodes. I think we'll be seeing them here, sometime soon. Cheers, Professor!
Alpha is a true masterpiece. Each song is magical. The debut album is so vital to that album's existence. Only Time Will Tell is a love ballad of love ballads. Heat of The Moment is a song that did touch so many. I loved the album. But Alpha is the album that was my overall favorite.
Great work. Thanks. This channel and this series harkens back to the days of Casey Kasem and Dick Clark for me. I think the reason is the genuine enthusiasm you have for the artists and the subjects.
Thanks!
This album never gets old and Asia gets my vote for greatest debut album from a supergroup. The musicianship is first rate and I love John Wetton’s voice. The songwriting is stellar too.
💯
This Band was magic. Alpha though was my favorite album.
I wore out that record in 82. Still one of my favorite records of all time.
I bought their first 2 albums. Both were pretty good. Their sound stood out in the early 80s like Boston stood out in the late 70s. Nobody sounded anything like them. They were soft on the ears 😀
This is the song that decided that I wanted to start a band! Soon after hearing it, I hit the JcPenny mail-order book and ordered a Harmony strat copy guitar and started a band. Thanx Asia for helping shape my future. And thank you Adam, for being the go-to for music reviews, trivia, and nostalgic info. I am only a "few" years older than you, but our generation is smack on! Keep the music alive...tramps like us baby...🎶
Early 80’s was excellent with the variety of popular music. 😃
That opening hook......a monster among legendary hooks.
I was about 16 years old when this album came out and I loved it. Couldn't wait til Alpha came out! No one sounds like Asia. They feel very authentic to me. Most of their songs are about rising up, fighting, and have a sense of morality to them. Heat Of The Moment definitely was one I played often. Still have the vinyl to this day. Sad that John Whetten passed. I enjoyed watching the concerts on UA-cam.
I graduated in 84 and Asia was everything in 82-84
@@jeffjones2021 yes they were
They convey the emotion perfectly.
I was in the Army stationed in Georgia when this came out. We would go to this bar called The Carriage House and they had a large screen where they showed music videos. So many great vids at that time. This songs brings me back to those great times. Thanks for posting such great content.
One of my first favorite bands, this album came out when I was in seventh grade, so it was a big influence and still a fond memory. Fantastic opening chords, always loved John Wetton’s voice, and my favorite cover art ever.
I remember this song more than I want to sometimes. I wanted to send it to my boyfriend before I left for boot camp. I was a year ahead of him so I took it upon myself to be the first adult at a time when girls didn't take the lead very often. Hehehe, anyway. Our step moms told lies to break us up and I wanted him to hear this song, to pour out my heart to him. Life happened but we got the last laugh. It's been 41 years since he proposed but this year we're making it happen! 🎉
🤯 I had NO IDEA these guys were in the other bands!!! I was a Freshman/Sophomore in college when this album came out. I loved EVERY SONG!! Ahhhh, life before the internet….
As a Carl Palmer fan from the Crazy Word of Arthur Brown (saw live as he never recorded with him) and PM, I was blessed with seeing the ELP tour with the full orchestra and Asia up close. Later it was explained to ELP how to tour with a full orchestra without taking a full orchestra on the road...they lost money on that tour.
For Asia, it was a small venue (Royal Oak Theater, MI) and my friend and I were right down front on the floor. Between songs there were a lot of shout-outs for Steve at the beginning and more and more for Geoff on his own stage above the main stage. We stuck with Carl. He finally noticed and started smiling at us between numbers, then looking our way during the songs. After the concert, we were sure that Carl was spending a lot of time glancing at his little personal fan club! LOL Two nights later we call each other at the same time after work and yelled the same thing, "He WAS looking at us!" We had gotten our photos back...and he was staring into our cameras! Let's face it, we and Carl were getting older at the time and I think, in the end, it took all three of us back to the good old days.
But there wasn't a bad song put out by Asia, and the music brought back our feelings of teeny-boppers from the 60s and 70s. Asia was able to combine the eras and add the 80s (esp by Geoff's keyboard playing) and MTV just woke the BBs back up to new well-done music!
BTW, one of my top fav Asia songs is Prayin' 4 a Miracle. It was written by John, Sue Shifrin, and some unknown guy named David Cassidy (Mwahahahaha)!
Have you ever noticed that Carl is NEVER listed as a singer in any capacity on any recording he has done?
You are definitely keeping this music alive. I had totally forgotten about this song which I absolutely love. The drum hits in the empty space are amazing. Like a heartbeat.
Thanks Dean!
It could symbolize a heartbeat. Good call.
A Super Group made of 3 of my favorite Bands?? Of Course I loved ASIA!!! 😜 Weird that I always remember one particular moment of hearing them... I was 8 years old looking at the Model Car kits at K-Mart. 🤣 Have worn out Their albums several times over the years. Along with YES and ELP and K.C... 🤘🤘🤘
That is crazy... I was in a deep dive / rabbit hole on John Wetton just the other day. King Crimson is one of my favorite bands and John is one of my influences. I Started playing Bass 40 years ago (and still do) because of him...and here you are talking about him. Thanks.
That is one of my favorite albulms of all time. The album cover is fantastic too...👍
Hell, I even put it on Color by Number!
I can't believe you got an interview with Geoff Downes!!! Brilliant! Asia brings back so many memories!
That album was the first one I bought, with the money I got from my 12th birthday. There was nothing like that then. Still one of my favorites.
When my daughter got out of rehab, the promise was to see Asia in concert. We saw them again a couple of times before Wetton died. Many great father/daughter sing alongs over the years.
I remember me and my girlfriend listening to this album back in the summer of 82, 41 yrs cams and went.
So much talent in Asia with top notch musicians who all came from legendary groups. Their music was so well produced and recorded that it still sounds great today. They basically hit it out of the park! Thanks, Adam!
Thanks Robster. Have a great wed!
Sounded futuristic and bombastic.
What a great band. Fantastic songwriting team. Creative arrangements too. ASIA ended up with five top-notch albums, thanks to a productive reunion.
Our local radio station had album reviews at night. When I was a kid, I recorded Asia from the radio onto my portable cassette player and listened to it until I wore out the tape!
I would later buy the cd, and I still have it. It’s one of our (my wife and I) favorite albums of all time 👍🏻👍🏻
One of my favorite bands. I played my Asia and Alpha cassettes to death in the ‘80s. Still enjoy them today. Carl Palmer is an outstanding drummer. Looking forward to watching this video, Professor! 🍿
Hope you enjoy it Rich!
Got your candies in handy? 🍭
Ahh, the summer of 1982... I was 20 years old and full of piss and vinegar. I had been in the Air Force for a whole year and was still finishing up my radar/communication technician training. One of my roommates in the barracks (we were 4 to a room) had a kick ass stereo system and we almost wore the grooves off of Asia's debut album and Journey's "Escape". So many great memories of that summer. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Prof. Love the channel.
Astra is an underrated album. "Go" hooked me on it. I was a fan from '82 as a teen.
"Days Like These" also a great underrated single.
Once again, great album cover as well.
"Go" is a great song. Heck, that album is really good, too.
"Days like these" is a fantastic song. It's a joy to listen anytime.
They all had good album covers, haha.
What are my memories?
I was in my kitchen one early Saturday morning, listening to Casey Kasem. "Debuting all the way at number 26 is a song by a supergroup from England. The last time we had a song debut so high was Diana Ross with Upside Down, all the way at number 19."
Then the power riff by Howe. And that was all she wrote. I wore out 3 cassettes, had the vinyl, and now have it on several CDS and MP3s. I've worn out few cassettes, multiple times. 90210 from YES and Strength in Numbers by 38 Special come to mind.
Definitely one of my favorite albums of the 80s. Helped get me through my college years. I was a big fan of ELP and also liked Yes and King Crimson, so I decided to give Asia a try, and they didn't let down. As Geoff Downes basically said, this was intelligent, well crafted and well played rock by brilliant musicians. Great interview with a lot of interesting information.
Heat Of The Moment is the biggest hit for sure! For me, the whole album is fantastic, but I want to point the great Without You. What a song! Asia made me listen to and feel the song. If you didnt listen to it with a headphone yet, go and do it! Never get tired of it! Thank you Professor for this one!!
I saw Asia live twice and both concerts were incredible.
Sole Survivor was quite memorable for me. It was one of those albums where every song was good.
Asia's first album was the first album that I loved front to back. That is a rare thing in an album. Some albums have 1 or 2 good songs, and then a lot of filler. This album was different, (like Bat out of Hell), and I did not know why. But once I found out where the members came from, I thought "of coarse, start with greatness and this is what you could end up with."
Good call!
Everything fills you up like a nice meal.
Definitely in the top ten best songs of the 80s....got to see the original lineup at a mid size theater around 2009....they were still incredible live 👌
So cool! The late John Wetton still pulled off his singing chops there, I’m sure.
@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 He sure did...they even added a key change to the end of Heat Of The Moment, taking the last few choruses up a whole step....amazing 👏
Very underrated group. Heat of the Moment is such a timeless song.
It's mesmerizing!
Underrated??? By whom exactly?
They weren't under rated at the time, because they sold 5 million copies of their Album. I suppose in the annals of rock history they were, because they were just a polished pop rock band.
It doesn’t get the credit it deserves.
@@geoffw1209 QUITE OBVIOUSLY BY HIM ! 😂 🤣 😂
That debut album by Asia is still one of my favorite albums of all time. They had some good music thereafter but this one was just magical.
looooved Asia!!! What a great band, and that first album... Wow!!!
It was THE song of my adolescence...I played the album so many times it literally wore the grooves off the vinyl. I can still hear my parents yelling at me to turn my stereo down because I would dime the volume for this song! That opening power chord sequence was so tasty it was meant to be cranked up until the walls shook. It was one of the first things i learned when I took up the guitar a few years later and I still find myself strumming it 40 years later. So sad that John Wetton left us but the music will always live on.
My brother had bought the album because the album artwork was cool. I used to 'borrow' that album all the time and listened to it over and over. Definitely a rare kind of supergroup where the members meshed well and their collaborations were excellent.
The first time I heard Heat of the Moment in the summer of 1982, I remember thinking how unique and really unknown the sound of that song was to my ears. I had to then rush out and buy the album.
Spring, 2001. I'm 16, about to enter junior year in high school. I used to fall asleep to sports talk radio on AM radio. One night, as I'm dozing off, I hear this guitar riff as bumper music. I listen to a few of the lyrics and hurriedly write them down. The next day, after school, I type what I have into Google...and that night, bought the CD. Love that song. And it's something we all can relate to.
I had no idea that the band members were already famous in their own right. I just liked the MUSIC.
There's no 80s weekend show that doesn't include this group. The album was huge that year, played everywhere. I was really surprised they couldn't follow-up on that success. Nice treatment.
Another great segment Adam.
Big fan.
Keep em coming.
Asia is such an underrated band. Love them.
Great interview! I love this album. I still listen to the CD to this day.
Love that video! I was 11 when the album cames up and it was during my football exercices that I discovered the song.. Our coach put music on a radio with different pop songs of the time when Heat of the Moment. came out. After the practise I demand my coach what was that song! That album leads my for a love of progressive rock since that. I discovered Yes. Genesis, King Crimson, ELP and all that. So thank you M. Downes for this interview and for the music! And it's not just Heat that was good but the whole album! Thanks to all the musicians of that wonderful band!
Asia as you said, heat of the moment , perfect 80's song, back when tinkering with a song was still done and considered just fine, after all music might be played on instruments including vocals but the feeling comes from within.
What a fantastic interview!! Thank you PoR!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
ASIA is one of my all-time favorite bands, and the debut is my favorite album cover ever.
First time to see Buggles and Supergroupin the same paragraph. The legendary Buggles first on MTV. Back when it didnt suck...!
Got to see Asia in concert on that first tour. It was my first concert with my friends and we had such an incredible time screaming the lyrics to all the songs. Really liked their other albums too and songs, especially some that didn't do as well, but still rocked with the best of them. "Summer Can't Last Too Long" and "Hard On Me" are two that leap to mind!
Thanks for the interview, Professor! You always talk to the ones that seem to be really elusive, yet so down-to-earth nice! Keep up the great work!
I don't think he was trying to be vulnerable, I think he was simply sharing how he honestly felt.
King Crimson, Elephant Talk, Wow, love it
Love Asia ... Love Yes ... Love King Crimson, each similar yet different, awesome interview
If i were to pick a song that could instantly take me back to 1982, Heat of the Moment is definitely one of my top choices.
Very cool interview Professor! Can’t wait till tomorrow!🤘🔥
Ha ha. Thanks Brent!
my first live concert at Pine Knob in Michigan, with Chris De Burgh opening, was the Asia tour in support of this album.
Asia has always been one of my favorite bands ... very influential to me. I had/have all of their albums, even through the Payne years. Their reunion album when Wetton returned, "Phoenix", was amazing. Growing up, "Astra" featuring the hit "Go" was actually my personal favorite Asia album back then. Some great memories of this band.
Hardcore fan!
Loved this band since their first album.... Got every one! 🎸 🎶 🎸 🎶 🎸
I saw them at the Fox Theater in Stockton CA. 1 of the best concerts ever!
Saw ASIA at Red Rocks 1st row Colorado outdoor. 1983 or 83, will check the ticket stub. Great time all around.
I love this song, and ONLY TIME WILL TELL, they are incredibly wonderful.
The musicality, the lyrics, and the vocals, are stellar, and I can(and have) listen to them over and over, and NEVER lose Interest. Singing along to them, brings me the greatest memories, joy. The feeling of gleeful nostalgia.
Good morning, Adam. Yours is my new favorite channel. I look forward to it each day. Keep it up, man. Cheers!
Morning! Thanks David!
Thanks for another nostalgic magic carpet ride.
Cheers!
Asia is/was a great prog/super group.... one of my favorites ever and I've only come to appreciate them more as I age. They were huge when they premiered and then went through almost a joke stage with 40 year old virgin, they were never a joke to me though, I've always been a fan. Those album covers too, just fantastic!
You get it Bud! Thanks for watching!
Post script to my comment, I just returned from a haircut and the song on the radio when I pulled into the drive was........Heat of The Moment.
I concur, like a fine wine, this music is aging well.
The art on those covers is truly magical. Like something out of a fantasy world.
Awe.....Asia!!!!! ❤️
Definitely an absolute favorite band of the 80's! For sure!!
Journey has been coined in my life as my favorite, but I definitely put Asia in the top spot, sitting right next to them! A tie for #1....hands down!
I love having Asia and Journey sitting on that same pedestal! ❤️
Professor, when I come in for the day from my extensive daily chores around my rural mountain ridge top property, I’m pretty tired. Most of the crap going on in the world doesn’t help me relax and prepare to sleep, but learning anything about my love of music takes me back in time when music had such influence in my life. Let me add in closing, wearing hearing aids has the benefit of being able to bluetooth music all day as I go about taking care of this log cabin in the Redwoods. Thank You !!🌲⛰👨🌾
One of the few bands that I can always listen to, the quality of the music by the original 4 members is unparalleled.
Don’t cry was the open the windows and blast the volume in the jeep song!
That's right!
Turn it up to 11 so the Spinal Tap guys can hear! 😂
I was 14 in 82 ...already familiar with yes ,elp and king c. So when Asia came out to me it was a breath of fresh air, i love it ! Love it then love it now ...thank you very much .
Save for one, ASIA has had the most stunning album covers. Wish he would have touched on that aspect.
Just love Asia. Heat Of The Moment is a song that would be great in any era. Still batting 1.000 Prof!! Thank you for my music fix everyday, don’t know how you do it but please don’t stop. ❤
Will do Mark! You keep watching, I'll keep releasing!
Forty years later and I still love to play their music!
My dad has this album, he played it all the time when I was growing up.
I still listen the albums Asia, Alpha, Astra and Aqua regularly and recently tracked down a CD of Then & Now to replace my cassette and be able to hear the songs that were original to it for the first time in a decade.
Literally my favorite album of the 80s! I saw them in concert when this album came out and they sounded great in fact better in concert like the album! I still love listening to this still today!
I had NO IDEA about any of this 😮😮😮😮 amazing musicians
I saw Asia in 2010 in Dallas, Texas. Ever since the 80s, it was my dream to see them play live. But, for many years, it looked like they were never going to tour again. Then when the Phoenix album came out I was so happy. They ended up being together the second time longer than the first time round in 1982. I even had VIP passes and got to meet everyone but Steve. He didn't come down from the stage. Great guys RIP John Wetton
I remember it well. I was listening to AT40, and Casey Kasem comes on and says, now here's the first super group of the 80s. Asia.
