I watched an interesting historical drama called Cathedral by the Sea, demonstrated corruption of laws in medieval Barcelona area and counterbalancing legal silver linings- and introduced me to a new term-- cambistry, (which the cambist did learn essentially through a Jew, Chasdai Crescas) which I guess is also money lending, but also apparently involved real percentage purity of coinage speculation, based on 'these coins equal these coins' equivocations from ever-new potential royal coinage decrees. Im wondering if cambistry was maybe also connected to the Jews being servi camerai [sic] sometimes having monopolies on rarer precious metals as you've mentioned on occasion.
Did this include or was this the practice of shaving fine amounts of silver and gold coins? Each coin had a legal weight and very incredible weight instruments were that sensitive back then.

A king declares his silver marks are worth a foreign mark even though his mark is only 70 percent silver, the other is 90- well the royal decree might unfair but that's reality. Regardless of how pure the coin is, shaving would be shaving the edges of whatever the king's agent minted in the same size and weight as every other one (which I think is where the ridges on edges of coins originated).
