    WE'RE BACK! With a brand new special on the LSWR T3 class 4-4-0s.
    20 of these express passenger engines were built between 1890-93, with the preserved example No563 returning to traffic at the Swanage Railway in October 2023
    This is an original documentary produced by me and my friends, starring my creations and myself.

    I like the use of model footage here to fill in the gaps where related locomotives do not survive. Very creative! The T3 is just stunning, and this video does her credit.

    In my opinion I think the T3 is better than the T9 as it the most good looking 4-4-0 express loco that ever run. I do like the T9, but the T3 has a interesting features that the T9 don’t have and that is the piston goes through the cylinders.

    I really hope we get a ready to run OO scale model of 563 to help raise awareness of her existence! This locomotive is incredible, as a survivor, an exception and now a living, breathing example of the golden age of railways.
    and.. as an LSWR fan.. I feel so lucky to be around to see her in steam!
    Here's to hope 488 on the bluebell gets a similar treatment.. be amazing to see the two of them together.
    Thank goodness she can't be painted into BR Black too. provided she doesn't go the SVR lol....

    I love this take on doing sole survivors Chris & what an engine to start on. I remember hearing the news that the NRM gave the T3 to swanage & heard it was going to be restored to working order, figuring it would take at least ten years, I put it at the back of my mind. Then over the last couple of years, I saw how tantalisingly close the restoration was getting to completion & I think it's fair to say, I was gobsmacked when I saw the Swanage's video on her steam test, I couldn't believe that after being inactive for so long, six short years later, she was steaming again. A true testament to all involved in getting what I think is one of Britain's most beautiful engines back in the public eye once more & what a livery to choose, these engines carried a variety of shades of green in their day & this particular livery is simply gorgeous. I really hope to see her in person at some point

    Adams also invented the famous ADAMS BOGIE, which, as well as pivoting, moved laterally. Adams tank engines (02?) as a class, ran alongside Drummond comfortably into BR. As well as other Pre-Grouping tank engines.
    Personally, apart from the Schools Class (V) I think All the Adams 4-4-0’s are arguably the best and most handsome four-coupled locomotives ever built.

    She's truly a grand old girl, the Lady Grantham of steam for the Downton Abbey fans. And an inspirational example of what is possible with the money and drive to achieve it. If the T3 can steam again, then maybe another Victorian queen could too someday. It might take some convincing to restore the Stirling Single or City of Truro, but the Bluebell Railway did announce plans to have a look at the Adams Radial Tank once their Brighton Atlantic is finished.

    There was a nicely restored LSWR carriage in salmon and brown restored at the same time (1948/9?). What became of that?...there was little care about saving carriages until decades later. I recall a colour plate of the two in the Railway Magazine at the end of the Forties.

    Truly a beautiful locomotive, the stove pipe smokestack is strangely one of my favorite features of Adams locomotives and this one looks so much better with it.
    I wholeheartedly support your decision to showcase models as props to showcase extra context, they're the next best thing to public domain footage.

    • @joshslater2426
      @joshslater2426 7 місяців тому

      Agreed. I would like to add that the stovepipe chimney is also quite beautiful on Great Eastern Railway locos too.

    • @reesochacon1448
      @reesochacon1448 4 місяці тому

      @@joshslater2426 The stovepipe chimney on Great Eastern Railway locomotives was actually first used on Adams locomotives. The reason why early Holden locomotives also carried a stovepipe chimney was because James Holden used slightly tweaked versions of the best parts from his predecessors, those being Samuel Waite Johnson, William Adams, Massey Bromley, and Thomas William Worsdell. That being said, Samuel Waite Johnson's early designs for the Midland Railway were originally very similar to his own designs for the Great Eastern Railway, as were William Adams's designs for the London & South Western Railway.

    I think another reason 563 is so loved now is because it represents something that would normally be regarded as impossible: When a preserved engine ends up as a display piece in a museum, especially for a long period of time - think Thundersley, the T26, the Stanier Tank and so forth - it's generally agreed by all but the most delusional enthusiasts that it's going to stay there permanently. The T3 is the biggest example of that, last steaming in World War 2 and only leaving the NRM as a prop for the Railway Children show. Out of nowhere, the T3 leaves the NRM, goes to the Swanage Railway, and within 6 years it's running again. If you told someone before this that the T3 would return to home territory and be restored to working order, you'd be laughed out of the room. The 563 group and the Swanage Railway have done the impossible, and no one who was around to witness this event will forget that.

    The Swanage Railway has done a great job in restoring this engine.
    What makes this locomotive so special is because there aren't that many Victorian age locomotives in running condition these days, you can perhaps count the numbers on ten fingers, and that's a very small percentage of the total.

    • @joshslater2426

      I would say that there were loads of them, but given that the Y7, SE&CR H class and most recently (and tragically) the GER Y14 have all been taken out of traffic in the past few years. This is why the Victorian and Edwardian new builds are a much-needed presence on the heritage circuit.

      That might sound good on paper, but be careful what you wish for. The National Collection was created to preserve key locos of railway history on display for future generations. Steaming them wears them out and overhauls mean a loss of authenticity. Even if it would be nice, I’m personally fine with many of the collection’s Victorian and Edwardian locos being safe and sound in museums.

    It's been a while since I've seen a new episode of SLIP, and what an engine to see it again. While I've never heard of the T3s before this, the way you talked about it really makes it seem all the more special of a loco, and defiantly one to look out for when running. An amazing video Chris, keep up the amazing work!

    I wish we had more engines of this vintage running in Sweden. Sadly we only have some narrow gauge ones from the late 1800s running.

    Number 120 has always been persoanl favorite of all LSWR locomotives, but honestly I did look into the history of this particular locomotive a couple of years ago and honestly I felt like that this engine truly deserves another chance to finally run again for all of us to see for there were many souls who worked her and wished for her to be ran once again. I hope to see you one day that both 563 and 120 can run on the same rails together in the same colors that they served in a century ago

    Very well presented, Chris - thoroughly enjoyed. (It was a pleasure to meet you and chat at Highley platform end during the SVR gala when I was over there.)

    Another excellent episode of SLIPS thank you for continuing to produce top quality content. The model segments were a nice new addition and I hope we see more of them in the future. Thank you for being the inspiration for TLF. Carry on the good work and I look forward to seeing what you produce in the future
