Toyota Corolla E70 Drift. Is the KE70 good for drifting? (TE71, AE71, AE70, KE74, TE70, TE72...)

  • The Corolla E70 was the fourth generation of cars sold by Toyota under the Corolla nameplate. It was for sale between 1979 and 1987. This Corolla was offered in all body styles: two-door Sedan, four-door Sedan, two-door Hardtop Coupé, three-door Coupé, and three-door Liftback Coupé.The engines were not powerful in this Corolla, they all had 4 cylinder naturally aspirated engines with displacement from 1.3L to 1.8L but the weight of the car is low, so drifting is possible. Also engine swaps are popular for this model, like the legendary 4AGE.
All models had Rear-wheel drive configuration, very similar chassis to the AE86. This Toyota is lightweight, but it also has a short wheelbase and it has a solid rear axle. These traits mean that its handling at the limit is quite twitchy. The driver needs to have quick hands and a really good sense for weight transfer in order to drift it successfully.
Power is low, making it difficult to get sideways and harder to keep sideways in drift compared to more powerful cars, such as a Silvia.
These traits make the AE86 and E70 excellent first drift cars. This car communicates well with the driver and will punish you for your mistakes but means that you learn fast.
Most people who learn to drift in a Corolla don’t rely so heavily on the handbrake or the power to get them through a course. They can balance their car using weight transfer, commitment, and braking. They tend to have much more full throttle, low exit angle and high intensity driving styles.
As you learn to drive, you can learn to be a mechanic too as they have a simple mechanic-friendly design. Also light weight means lower wear on parts, including tires.
Also the E70 Corollas are much cheaper than the AE86. If you want similar handling for a fraction of the price, the E70 is a good alternative.
They are rare to see in competition these days as they have an old suspension design that does not generate much grip. But they are fun cars to drive and can be found on track days with smiling drivers behind the wheel. KE 70 カローラ ドリフト #Drift #Drifting #KE70 KE70 TE71 AE71 AE70 KE74 TE70 TE72

It's basically the same as an AE86. Just cooler looking imo. I own one myself with a 4AGZE swap. So much fun.

My understanding is the floor pans are basically identical, pretty much down to the spot welds. Just watched a video that briefly talked about a guy using an ae86 rear floor section in a ke70 van/wagon to get rid of the leaf springs and have 4 link rear.

I had the same conversion, map sensored 4agze with a pulley kit on the super charger, I ended up running a turbo, and it was the easiest car to drift i've driven, I did change the diff to a LSD, a Ford Borg Warner diff and a celica gear box I also upgrade the suspension, when I put it on the dyno I ended up with 285 rw kw, because the car was so light you couldn't blow the diff or the gear box no matter how hard you tried
I got a lot of the parts for the conversion from a ae71 corolla, it had all the parts I needed to make it a straight forward Bolt on conversion.
I miss my corollas, I had ke20 with a fully worked 5k in it, stock ke20 that was in amazing condition but my favourite by far was the KE70 with a 4agze conversion,

My first time street drifting back 15 years ago was in TE72 wagon, took it out on a rainy night. Has been my favorite corolla chassis since. Still have the '81 wagon but added a '82 sedan since and on the lookout for more!

All of the lighter old Toyota RWD's are almost or entirely the same underneath, the 6.7" and 7.2" rear axles and T50 stems from the late 60's/early 70's (depends whether we talk prototype or production), near identical or same weight, wheelbase, width & suspension pickup points.
Really what sets them apart is how they look, wiring colors are and mean the same (tackle one, you can do all the others), most of the AE86 stuff bolts right in so long as you do the whole component, it's when you try to keep the stock U/S rear axle with a 4A-GE build that you're gonna have to build custom driveshafts & have them balanced etc, the price of that = Might as well splurge on the AE86 rear axle too and bolt it straight in.
4A-GE'ing a KE70 complete with fuel tank, rear axle, transmission, front subframe etc? I mean if you can afford it, go ahead! Wiring? just do 12v battery & Ignition for 4 wires onto the engine loom, done.
    It's a comparative minimum of fabrication/welding/wiring skills.
It's not so much a "build" as just bolting stuff in really, you don't even have to be a mechanic, only question these days is affordability.

unfortunately no one really knows about other types of this car other than the sedan which is the most popular. In my opinion the Coupe models look more sporty and almost look like the legendary ae86 corolla.

(In response to original comment) The reason you don't see them as much in drifting isn't because they aren't popular, you don't see them because most people can't be bothered re-engineering the front crossmember.
What I mean by that is the coupe's have worm & roller steering, as you probably know rack & pinion is what you need for drifting because it's more modular.
Shorter steering knuckles (for more steering lock) with worm & roller on these Toyota's means you lose self centering forces (I've tried lol), and with 110mm knuckles the ratio increases to like 5 turns of the wheel on a worm & roller contra 3.3 with a rack & pinion, and add to that you literally have to catch every drift without ANY feedback from the steering wheel, no matter how much caster you run.
      A.k.a, good luck with that.
So what's the problem? Just swap in the 4dr one?
Nope... because the AE70/KE70 rack & pinion crossmembers have different chassis pick-up positions/bolt-pattern for their crossmembers (where the steering rack bolts to) so you can't just bolt stuff in to solve problem as you normally would with most other corolla's.
You need fabrication skills & experience to create a modular jig out of both crossmembers, and Frankenstein the sh*t out of it (pardon the French).
Which is why the sedan's and van's (even with the leaf spring conundrum) are more popular in drifting 😊
