I too had an excessive lip product collection, and I too am no longer interested in having so many options. I have the ones that work, and I plan to use down the excess without replacing them. I go for walks in the evening, and I've started wearing the ones that I would never choose to wear out, both so I can use them up and to make myself feel a little special and pretty. Good job girl! Normalizing this way of thinking is so needed. Not only for making responsible financial decisions but also for appreciating the things we already have.
Sh1t. $622 for a handful of things one can live perfectly well without. Even seeing this number in a cart makes my eye twitch. Thank you, Shawna. I’ve recently bought a wet n wild foundation for like $9 only bcs I needed a shade that actually matches my skin and I watched some reviews and read some comments. I’m more than happy. Not planning to shop at Sephora. Going to avoid forking out on makeup.
If you found a lipstick after 2 years and it is weirdly dry I would recommend ditching it honestly. Cosmetics in general DO expire and when their colour or texture changes it means that they might be harmful for use - can for example cause rashes.
Found your channel recently and now when I’m tempted to buy things on impulse, I think “oh no I need Shawna!” Love your work, please keep making your vids!
This video was so refreshing to watch😊I go through the same line of thinking and constantly remove things from my cart and talk myself out of buying things.
I can’t say how much I love this video - you going through and ‘impulsively’ adding to cart, then having what you have in front of you and critically thinking about what you need, like in such detail is SUCH a smart way to shop. I do some of this already, but I can definitely see myself applying what you’ve done here to all of my shopping really. I would love for you to do this in other categories too! But understand how this might be unrealistic as you probably don’t do these big shops often. Again, this is one of my fav videos you’ve ever done, love LOVE!! ❤

Oh, I needed this. I've been getting bombarded by Sephora sale videos and ads, but I'm on a no-buy for at least a year. I'm more of a skincare girl and I have too much of that to work through, too. Sorry Sephora! Maybe next year.
I’m watching you go through foundations right now and as someone who worked in cosmetics for years, you should get the fenty foundation. You love it and you didn’t sound excited about the nyx foundation. Yes it’s expensive, but if it’s something you love you are going to use it and be happy about using it ❤️
I’m so happy I discovered your channel. Seeing that you keep yourself accountable makes me want to keep MYSELF accountable. There is so much makeup content being pushed with everything being described as life changing that it’s so easy to be influenced. I saved myself a lot of money this sephora sale 😅
Omg this is a very smart approach! It's not the same try to remember what we have instead of touching actually what we already have. Most of the new things become not so much appealing anymore! 😅😅😅
i’m going to japan in january so i’m going to be mindful and only buy travel size things i can use for that trip !! thank you for these videos they definitely help
Honestly if Sephora took more of an Ipsy approach with their free gift bags and gave people options to pick their skin tone undertones etc and recieved products based on those things it would be way better than what they do now. It would also be a way for people to try new products in a way that’s more curated to their skin type, skin tone, eye color, etc.
I’ll be honest … I bought the summer Fridays lip set when it came out and I don’t regret it. I let my daughter pick one ,& I’ve nearly used one up. I’ve 2 left ,& I’ve tried them .. love all the scents & know which one I’ll buy full size when I’m finished. Xx
I also went through my cart while watching this and it felt great to be analytical about what items to keep in. Thank you for being a voice of reason in this space
Recent subscriber here! I love your channel and the deinfluencing. As a fellow Taylor Swift fan, I was wondering if you would ever feel comfortable talking about her (in my opinion) bonkers capitalism. It’s really hit me with TTPD. First there were four variants that you could preorder each with an exclusive track, that you couldn’t know if you liked, then there was a limited drop slipcase to hold all of those albums, now she’s dropping the anthology as a target exclusive on Black Friday (and that’s just vinyl!) I only bought one vinyl, and frankly I will never preorder again, because the bulk of the songs I like are on the anthology. The whole thing has started to feel bad, and I’d love to hear another fan’s perspective. Thanks, keep up the great work!
Good video, these are the thought processes that keep people from emotional spending. My cart is under $90 and I'm buying just replacements. I lost rouge status a couple years ago, I'm slated to lose VIB status this year. I'm kind of proud of myself!
This is such a great idea! It's similar to how I've started talking myself down from unnecessary purchases. I don't even know how much money I've saved by slowing down and not caving to my impulses.
Thank you for making this video. It's so refreshing to see someone who's not afraid to keep themselves accountable in front of their audience (and not only give advice they don't follow behind the scenes). I recently bought a few things, and I give myself 2 weeks to make a list of everything I own and set my priorities based on what I need first. It was very draining to go back in forth but I'm glad I was able to buy more consciously (no backups except for essential supplements I'm taking every day, no products that come in shades I already have, no replacement for something I didn't finish first)
This video is so so helpful in just showing how the thought process works. It can be really hard to figure out what questions to ask yourself initially when you're first trying to be more mindful with your spending. Also I love putting what you have in front of you. That is fantastic and so helpful!
I really liked this walk-through of your choice process. I don't wear make up at all, but your process works with everything that is not necessary to survive (like a shelter and food uu)
Great video, I've really started doing the same kind of thing when I am tempted to buy something. It's amazing how often I buy something only to realize that it's ultimately redundant to something I already have. We all have personal preferences and tend to buy things accordingly...and it's easy to forget exactly what we already have.
100%! I often do a version of this offline but not always with the products right in front of me where I can touch them and swatch them. That was a little bit of extra fun that I appreciated
For anyone ready to get the mini summer Fridays lip balms, I would actually recommend getting one full size instead since one will be your favourite shade/scent and the applicator on the full one is a lot nicer - it’s a soft squishy plastic. Whereas on the minis it’s a hard plastic tip and doesn’t feel as luxurious x
I've noticed that I've definitely reduced my impulse spending in the last year or so. I now try to think critically before making a purchase. Do I really need this? Do I have space for it? Do I already have something that I could use instead? Is this actually an item that I want or is the FOMO getting to me? Would I rather set aside this money for something else? Asking myself these questions has helped me to make more informed choices with my purchasing and save a bit of extra money each month.
Great video! I recently had the same realization when it took me nearly a year of everyday use at work to finish a lipstick how much products actually last for and how long it would even take me to go through my small collection.
Really recommend using iris- reviewing, critiquing and categorizing your collection makes you see what you have, how much you have, what you use and makes you think about pricy past purchases that haven’t been worth it.
Loved this video! This my exact philosophy as well these days. Also the Maybelline Vinyl Ink lipstick is not sheer, it just has a tendency to separate in the tube after some time. Shake it hard for a minute or two and it will mix back again and be fully opaque!
Believe it or not I’ve never shopped at Sephora😂 I am 35 and finally found my main bare minimum skin products I have to have always. I now go for more advanced skin care a couple times a year instead that gives me more than regular cosmetics usually does. Though it’s about $1000 a year. IDK maybe I am getting old 😅 Thanks for sharing you thought process though! I still found it interesting and will be implementing your advice to my clothing shopping!❤
Love going through your Sephora cart with your items in front of you-such a good idea! I allow myself 1 backup of skincare or health items (i.e. moisturizer, body wash, sunscreen). I don't keep backups of makeup because I don't wear makeup 90% of the time (I am more of a skincare junkie). I am currently doing a "project pan" type project on shampoos-I have soooo many sample and travel sized shampoos. My favorite shampoo is actually Moroccanoil, but I cannot buy another one until I finish my samples and travel shampoos.
Foundation prices have just been ridiculous lately, fenty pro filtr at launch was like 30-40 ish dollars and the new one is $54 ? are you kidding me like that stuff costs maybe 10 dollars to make (and I’m being way generous), when did we accept those prices as normal ?
Great listening I think there are so so many options now growing up I had a little makeup most women didn't have that much makeup but there were not all these brands like now
I loved this video. I’m not big into makeup. I’m wading in because I’m old and starting to show it. lol. I’m trying to find a line between looking presentable and not trying to look 20. Anyway, I laugh at the people who say if you put it in a cart, you will buy it. I break this rule all the time. I do this very same thing you did in this video any time I shop. Whether it’s Target or the thrift store, I start by stashing stuff in my cart, but before I checkout, I always reevaluate everything I have in my cart. It really helps me not to overspend or bring home stuff I don’t need. I also try to periodically go through all of my online carts the same way. I rarely buy online, but it really helps to not make too many frivolous purchases that disappoint and instead stick to things I really want or need. I think it also fulfills a psychological need to shop without actually spending too much money and bringing too much stuff home.
I was working on my sale cart this morning. I'm out of the Hourglass Vanish Foundation Stick and almost out of GrandeLash serum, so I will be buying those. I'm thinking of also getting the Sephora Favorites mascara set as I really like a mini mascara because I'm religious about replacing my open mascara every 3 months and it seems like such a waste of packaging to toss out a full size. And maybe I'd throw in a fun new lip gloss or something. My Sephora sale orders are generally pretty utilitarian and reasonable.
I really appreciate this video! I've been watching for a while (not good at commenting) and your videos really help me to rethink my purchases. I don't shop at Sephora nor do I do online shopping. But the way you verbalised your thoughts about buying / not buying can be used for other things as well. Though to be fair it helped me to not buy new eye shadow pallettes I see :')
highly reccomend the beautiful and bothered podcast! professional makeup artists who both previously worked at sephora before their own careers, no bs, all truth, no makeup sponsorships, complete transparency!
Your voice is so relaxing and I was crushing on the mini lip from Sunday Friday for about two weeks but I will be getting a mini with my birthday gift from Sephora so I just ordered 1 product at $28. Thanks for helping me keep everything in perspective because I have everything that I need, like 1 blush and 1 eyeliner etc. I do have more lip products but I use them everyday as I also mix them together so they get used within a 3 month period.
Hi Shawna, I'm not a makeup wearer, unless it's for weddings and funerals (where no one is likely to be focused on me anyway). Predominantly for financial reasons, but im a 'take me as you find me' person, who doesnt have the headspace for a daily makeup routine. Thank you though on such an educational video about so many of the different types of products. You're look is lovely.
Your whole look today is lovely like the hair makeup and outfit :) And what a mindful and smart exercise! I am rouge and I have a body item, a brush and a travel perfume in my cart so far. Every time I am tempted to add something else I remind myself you have that or you need to finish X and it stops me. It may end up being a small haul but I can say honestly I don't need anything. Last sale I was intentional so I have some backups of things I use all the time already.
Please do more of these. I feel like I was shopping vicariously but also, you’re not getting caught up in the buying. And it’s so logical. But I love all your thoughts about them.
Love this, such a helpful idea to shop with what you already have in front of you. I did a sit down lipstick swatching along with another youtuber video. It was really helpful to minimize the urge to buy many more. This video and the last one, especially the point to look up specific reviews vs recommendations, are great resources for those of us who are trying to be mindful about the sale. My first order was very much like this, but everyday I still have to talk myself down from that limited set (for me its the merit trio) or that new flavour (laneige peppermint) or something I really wanted to try but have enough of so it can wait until the next sale at least. Thank you for the supportive video!
I just did the same process while watching the video. Ended up with only 3 things in my cart: 2 mini sizes of things I’ve wanted to try for a long time and 1 lipbalm that I need (I had like 7 in my cart). It took me a lot of effort to remove the Summer Fridays mini sets, we all want this I swear. I’ll exchange my points for $10 off, will end up spending like $50 instead of $250.
Since having started watching your videos, I've become more mindful of my spending, so for that, I say thank you. I was already trying to save more this year, which is generally going okay enough, but I could save much more I think. Unfortunately like so many of us I have difficulty saying no to sales, especially in the make-up and fashion department... your videos have urged me to ask myself more frequently whether I really need something and how/when I'm going to use it.
I have decided to skip the sale this year. I only get 15% off and I can wait for Black Friday before running out of anything. I have not heard any rave reviews about the CT lipsticks. I did try the pillow talk lip liner and think that it is worth it. I used it nearly every day for 2 years and finished it. The expiration is 24 months too! I think the formula is creamy for a liner but is long lasting. I’m forcing myself to finish a dupe that isn’t nearly as nice before I buy another one.
Hi Shawna! Just wanted to let you know that Fenty always has 25-30% off sitewide usually on their website for Black Friday which always beats the Sephora sale to save money! Loved this video 🩵
nyx & wet and wild (rexall) are both AMAZING powders at the drugstore! also, revlon has a soft matte foundation (black tube) that is a FANTASTIC long wear! not to influence you at all, but because you mentioned that you're about to be out of them and are looking for drugstore options.
I loved this video and would love to see more of this “go through my cart with me” format!❤ I’m not shopping the Sephora collection because I don’t need anything and I’m already planning on getting some makeup later this month (sadly I’m allergic to my eyeshadow palettes so I need a new one 🥲 Most of my makeup is also way past expiry date so I had to get rid of some more as well). I’ve been really enjoying window shopping skincare and makeup though!
Great video idea! When you go to Sephora, I’d recommend getting a sample of 1-2 loose powders so you can try and see if you like them. I always do this with foundations so I don’t waste my money on a bad shade or formula. The O/S might be on the drier side. Also, when you finish your hair oil, not now, I’d recommend the Crown Affair. It is pricy, but it works really well on my fine, more on the oily side hair and this bottle will last me like 2+ years. The Moroccan was too heavy for me.
nice to see someone in toronto whos being open about wanting things they don't need and having to talk themselves out of it! I'm planning on purchasing pattern beauty gel and shampoo that I'm about to run out of. nice to have a discount and save a little coin, but I'm only allowing myself one new makeup buy, and it's not even a kit lol
I really enjoyed the format of this video, it was very relatable to me and great to get a real representation of your thought processes for why certain products appeal(ed) to you and how you consider whether they are a good purchase for you to make at that time or in future, etc. I'm sure it will have been helpful to others too, for deinfluencing or with more mindful consumption in general. I'm personally not a shopper, never have been, but I have had my own issues around that to overcome - such as struggling to spend money on myself and feeling guilty when I do, sometimes overthinking or making misguided purchases. I've learned to be more intentional, to reframe my thoughts about treating and taking care of myself, and to feel more secure in my choices but it's a constant work in progress. I love making wish lists and a huge part of my enjoyment, little dopamine buzzes can come from simply 'window shopping', then later decluttering a list/basket or tidying up my Pinterest haha Does anyone else relate or do this kind of thing? I love what you do, thank you for sharing!
I don’t really shop at Sephora much, but I did buy myself a lip gloss from them that I ended up really liking and that’s pretty much the only thing I bought
I am just a beauty insider so I'm not shopping the Sephora sale for the 10%. However, I did just buy about Sephora Collection products. I edited my cart heavily to get things that I actually don't have. Mostly their blushes, eyeliners, and the Sephora pro brush set. I have also been redeeming my credit card rewards for Sephora gift cards when there is an offer from my credit card that makes the gift card worth more than the reward amt alone. My cart was about 180 before all discounts, about 130 after the 30%, and then after gift cards I paid about 50 dollars. I am actually really proud of myself, this is the most mindful I have been when buying anything ever
Can I deinfluence you from repurchasing the fenty foundation? I’m not sure the consistency is very good you might just be used to it and sold by the good colour match. Honestly it’s a bit cakey on me and smells like plastercine on my face. I’ve switched to nars tinted moisturiser and it’s so much better - used with concealer it’s very good coverage. Good if your skin is combi
Very interesting to discover how much money I'm saving by not wearing makeup. All the products I didn't even know existed. All the possible temptations that do not apply to me.
I was feeling really called out and then realized I’m not the problem and I’m not actually being called out. I shop at Sephora twice a year. Only during sales. Typically I spend more in the fall one bc sets come out. And for the same cost, if I can get bonus stuff? Heck yeah. But this is when I stock up on skincare for the year. I only buy it then. And I buy Christmas stuff
I am getting low on a lot of my makeup so I stocked up. I also got mini sizes in some items because I don't wear makeup everyday. I got the Rose Inc foundation which was already 1/2 off, the Lawless eyebrow pencil and concealer which was already on sale as well, a mini Hoola bronzer, a mini tower 28 sos spray (I used my friend's one time and was obsessed with it, I am going to buy a big size off of amazon after I run out and just refill the mini to use for travel), and KP bump eraser. All for $100 including tax and my 15% off
I am rouge member, I spent $400 from the original $1000 cart I originally had. I repurchased my skin care for me and my two daughters. Shampoo, body wash and mostly hygiene products.
I have the same foundation strategy lol! I keep my ilia foundation for days where I really want to look nice because it's expensive and I don't wanna blow through it. but I also keep a maybelline that's more for everyday kind of use. I'm not too strict about it though which makes it fun, sometimes I'll randomly use ilia or vice versa :)
I got two things, 1 thing I use regularly and am almost out of (L'Occitane hand cream) and 1 product I’ve been wanting for months after getting a sample (Patrick Ta lipgloss in "is she younger than me") Cart after tax was $41.09 🎉 Last year I spent $469.01. 🎊PROGRESS 🎊 💃🏾💃🏾
10:00 I've had the multi-year 'oh I want to try that' but for wreath making - the real ivy, eucalyptus etc kind. For years a plant shop (small business) in our city has run them, I saw it first 4 years ago and for the last 4 Christmases I've either not had the money/time or not seen a post about it until after the last date. I finally booked tickets this year, one for me and one for my sister in law as a treat as we don't spend much 1:1 time together. Spending £60/$75USD (each) on a limited lifespan decoration was something I've gone back and forth on. I'm excited to finally do it on year number 5, it's an experince and something I'll see on my front door everyday for months then I'll find a good quality fake one in the sale in January for future years
I’m about to finish my first ever full bottle of foundation (every other one has gone unused until it goes off)! But I’m not in a hurry to buy a replacement bottle - finishing one completely by scraping out the last bit of product is so satisfying! I feel I’m getting my money’s worth. I’ve also sampled a different foundation so perhaps I’ll switch up what I use and not re-buy until I use up another foundation? Just thoughts
just a heads up, i have gotten two of the patrick starr powders as a mini in the sample section, they do it quite a few times a year with a purchase of 30$
This could be a regular series “BYE not BUY” ;)

thank you!! so glad to hear you've been enjoying it
Honestly if Sephora took more of an Ipsy approach with their free gift bags and gave people options to pick their skin tone undertones etc and recieved products based on those things it would be way better than what they do now. It would also be a way for people to try new products in a way that’s more curated to their skin type, skin tone, eye color, etc.
Having your makeup in front of you when checking out is genious
My makeup includes:
2 foundations
1 mascara
1 brow pencil
1 eye liner
2 blushes
2 lipsticks
1 lip gloss
1 tinted lip balm
1 Carmex
1 Vaseline
2 eyeshadow palettes (one being old enough to be my granny 😂)
Thank you for making this video. It's so refreshing to see someone who's not afraid to keep themselves accountable in front of their audience (and not only give advice they don't follow behind the scenes).
I recently bought a few things, and I give myself 2 weeks to make a list of everything I own and set my priorities based on what I need first. It was very draining to go back in forth but I'm glad I was able to buy more consciously (no backups except for essential supplements I'm taking every day, no products that come in shades I already have, no replacement for something I didn't finish first)
Thank you so much!!! I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the video. Thanks for also sharing how you shop for things
Really informative and inspiring, can you PLEASE make more videos like this?
Loved this video! This my exact philosophy as well these days. Also the Maybelline Vinyl Ink lipstick is not sheer, it just has a tendency to separate in the tube after some time. Shake it hard for a minute or two and it will mix back again and be fully opaque!
Believe it or not I’ve never shopped at Sephora😂 I am 35 and finally found my main bare minimum skin products I have to have always. I now go for more advanced skin care a couple times a year instead that gives me more than regular cosmetics usually does. Though it’s about $1000 a year. IDK maybe I am getting old 😅
Thanks for sharing you thought process though!
Checking what you already have is brilliant!!!❤😊
Though to be fair it helped me to not buy new eye shadow pallettes I see :')
i love your outfit today!
thank you!!
I edited my cart while watching this!!! Thank you ❤
highly reccomend the beautiful and bothered podcast! professional makeup artists who both previously worked at sephora before their own careers, no bs, all truth, no makeup sponsorships, complete transparency!
Aspirational self control!
I loved this video and would love to see more of this “go through my cart with me” format!❤
I’m not shopping the Sephora collection because I don’t need anything and I’m already planning on getting some makeup later this month (sadly I’m allergic to my eyeshadow palettes so I need a new one 🥲 Most of my makeup is also way past expiry date so I had to get rid of some more as well).
Your channel is amazing ! I am trying to reconsider my buying habits and have been loving your videos ! ☺️
I’m always tempted by perfumes but I’ll wait until the spring sale!
Great job saving and being mindful.
@LorettaNance thank you I really appreciate that.
Well this was refreshing to the typical haul-o-rama feed and it's perfect for my current mindset ❤
Fun video! It’s great to talk through it
Great process for shopping! 👏🏽
Btw I love the mug so appropriate for fall. 🍁
This video is so crucial in these moments of frenzied buying. Thank you!
All for $100 including tax and my 15% off
Making a list and then letting it sit dor a few days or weeks is a very good idea.
I do think your hair looks incredibly shiny!
I'm excited to finally do it on year number 5, it's an experince and something I'll see on my front door everyday for months then I'll find a good quality fake one in the sale in January for future years
Abh and Laura mercier are really good!
For the setting powder I would try it in store! I heard the Huda is good
I should be going by a place that has a sephora next week and I'm going to try to get a sample of it!
I really love these makeup videos from you
Just a btw, the Maybelline Vinyl liquid lipsticks need to be shaken a *bunch* before application, so maybe that could be why your swatch was so sheer
ohhhh I did not know this. I'm going to shake mine up and see what happens because I definitely don't remember it being that sheer
recommend looking into Moroccan oil and what their owner supports before purchising any
just a heads up, i have gotten two of the patrick starr powders as a mini in the sample section, they do it quite a few times a year with a purchase of 30$
