Diversifying your hobbies is definitely something that has helped me. It worked out pretty perfectly with my main gaming partner, my fiance. When we met, I got him into board games, and he got me into hiking and kayaking. It's fantastic to have two very different things to share together. Gotta touch that grass sometimes haha!
I feel like "play the games you want to play" also counts for games that have been on your shelf of shame, you paid a lot for, or haven't played in a long time. Don't force yourself to play them because you feel like you "should."
Loved this video. One thing I have been working on is when hosting a game night, or introducing someone to your favorite games, don't forget to have fun! I get very caught up in being the "host" and worrying if they are having fun, or if I am doing enough, or whatever else that I forget to just enjoy it. If you have someone coming over to enjoy your favorite hobby, allow yourself to enjoy it with them! It will only make the experience better for all involved :)
You guys have trancended from a "channel that popped up while looking for something" to a channel I regularly watch so surprisingly fast and I love it! Really loving the energy and vibes, new subscriber here, keep it up!
Thanks for this. I know this channel is a business but I really appreciate that you both are able to remain true to yourselves and be genuine with your audience.
Oh and another thing i heard Ben on the Game Brain Podcast talk about: its ok to not like a game and get rid of it. You don't have to love everything, sometimes it just doesnt click with you like it does others and its ok to get rid of it
I only got (heavily) into board games this past January and I definitely feel the need to find other outlets, especially socially. I've got my D&D games on Sundays and that helps but I dove head-first into the deep end and haven't come up for air yet. (And will definitely look into Magic Mind!)
I just discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago and I have fallen totally in love ❤ You’re funny and authentic. This video really resonated with me. I was diagnosed with an aggressive type of breast cancer in 2019 and have been battling it since. Double mastectomy and 4 surgeries later, I have some lifelong, chronic health/pain issues. I definitely need a good chair. And chemo brain is real, I’ve found that watching how to play videos helps me a lot. I wasn’t able to play board games for 3yrs and am returning to them now and have been on a buying frenzy, worried I’d missed the best games ever, lol, smh. I just had to reign myself in because I haven’t actually played any of them yet! I would love to have a couples game night with you two and my wife and have you teach me games 😊 I want to play Flamecraft! I do have an illness, I’m a deluxe component snob 😂. We have a large collection of games, but no dedicated gaming table due to lack of space. We have games stacked everywhere, which drives my wife crazy! Definitely need to organize and maybe cull some. I have dozens of games that have never made it to the table because everyone just wants to play the same games over and over. How do you convince people to try new games! I’ve really been enjoying your content and look forward to more. Subscribed!❤
There could be a show about personal hygiene as well. Every time I played board games with a group of strangers, there was always at least one big, sweaty guy with long hair, a long beard, wearing rocker clothes who hadn’t showered in weeks.
@@josephgarcia9076 This doesn't happen to be Temblor in Bakersfield Ca, does it? If so, you need to stop by Panera Bread on California Ave on Saturdays too.
I just love your videos. You guys are so real and it’s truly refreshing. In conjunction with your point about “getting out and social”: I have been having fun finding games that are small enough to take out to a restaurant or a coffee shop to play with my wife. It’s pretty fun because it gets some people’s attention and we get to experience something we enjoy everywhere. Some of my favorites are Lost Cities, Hive, Fox in the Forest, and Claim
I love this! One thing I've added recently for self care is to buy a light therapy lamp after I was moved to an office space with no windows. I already noticed an improvement in my energy levels and focus. My youngest daughter doesn't play games like I do and I don't pressure her to play with me. If she's in the mood great but if not then that's ok too I just play solo. I also play games for the experience so I make sure I'm comfy, maybe music in the background anything to enhance the experience
I've found that a big thing for me is staying away from negativity and it kinda goes with your theme of research and form your own opinion. I'm not a fan of watching on social media when someone shares a game they love and immediately someone tells you why the game sucks and there is something better for them. For that reason, I stay away from posting in Facebook groups anymore. I think Jeff said it in a video a while back, let people experience the hobby (and life) their way.
This video is so important. And I agree with so many things you say. For example... someone told me once "Why do you play Flamecraft? It's way too light and it's like... older." And I was like "Because I love it?" "But there are better games..." I mean... why should I care? If I want to place cute little dragons on a cute playmat, I want to do that. And I will. The Magic Mind stuff sounds... interesting. Like... seriously something I should look into even though I don't really like matcha. Thanks for the info on that. Looking forward on the next update. I just love the "how you approach games" point on this list! Why do you even go and play a game when your intention is "I only want to proof that game X is worse than game Y". And the "reviews" topic? Absolutely correct. Yes, I watch VERY much boardgame content on UA-cam and I trust for example your opinion on games. But I would ALWAYS look at it and try it myself before I buy it. Thanks again for this video ❤ I really enjoyed watching it.
The hype train is real, and it's good to get games that have stayed popular over a year instead of being "this new amazing game" that is no longer played after 2 months and sits forgotten after 5 months.
We have really bad seating. My back hurts after even just an hour. I have a group that are pretty new to gaming, so I pick games that I know are lighter. We LOVE Wandering Towers. We are constantly laughing, trying to find our wizards... the neighbors even heard us having a great time. I have so many great, heavier games, but they just aren't ready yet. My personal thought is, I don't care if I win or lose, I just want to play. My game room is a MESS right now. I have games stacked in front of my fireplace. That is getting resolved today, thanks to Kallax. Jaime, what are your top three solo games? I know you are fond of Final Girl. Thanks so much for the tips!
@@FostertheMeeple Sorry for the multiple posts. Every time I hit post, nothing showed up! Thanks for the Top Three. It's cool that Final Girl is STILL up there.
I highly recommend Bubly! It has no sugar or toxic substitutes, different flavors, and no calories. It is more expensive than water but much less than beer.
I really don't pay attention to negative reviews. I pay attention to when when multiple people positively review a game. At this point, I know which content creators have similar tastes as me.
First of all, I just want to say that I equally love the both of you. You’re both great people. And although very different, I feel like I can identify with both of you. Secondly, Jeff, I want to say thank you for that terrific video you did discussing your battle with anxiety and depression. I deal with that as well, and it really sucks. I’m sorry you’re also going through that. And I love Jamie’s sunny and happy attitude. I feel like we could be friends. I also want to thank the both of you for trying to stop all the negativity that permeates the internet. It drove me away from any social media for about 7 years. I just do t get it. And you deal with it perfectly. I don’t know that you’ve talked about many of the games that I have, but that, of course, is fine. Haha I would like to hear your review of Betrayal at House on the Hill, but I don’t think you e played that. You had it in your collection but had said it hadn’t been played. There’s some games of mine that I would have loved for Jamie to discover when they were on Kickstarter/Gamefound, as I’m sure she’d be attracted to them. Such as Forest of Radgost, Robot Quest Arena , Magical Friends and how to Summon Them. I probably lean a bit towards her taste but I like a lot of your stuff too. I am guilty of being a sucker for attractive box covers and just fun games. All about theme for me. Can’t do war games though. Anyway, I hope I’ll get to one of these board game conventions that you go to, and try to meet you there. I’ll keep you posted. But probably not anytime soon. Thanks for listening to my rant. Have a great weekend guys! 😊
@@FostertheMeeplebut on a serious note, i 100% agree on taking someone's opinions and thoughts on a game and not using that to make a decision on either buying or not buying a game. Because I have found great games that a reviewer or creator didn't like but I think are great games.
Just a quick question! Do you guys find that now, since you both work in the board gaming industry, it is harder to get out of the work mindset when it comes to games? And do you think it is harder step away to do other things? Love y’all’s videos!
It’s the most difficult because we work from home, and our studio to film is also here. So separating work, filming (which although super fun is still work) can be tough.
Unbiased opinion great video.I'm like Jeff I collect videogames, and figures so I just step away from them for another hobby every once in a while. Jeff please be careful with the energy drinks.
My soap box is to take care of yourself physically. Physical exercise will make things like diet, hydration, mental, and emotional health a priority. I have enjoyed Crossfit because it basically gamifies your fitness (track your improvement over time, strategy, try to beat others in a fun way, etc.) while providing a community of people to be around. I have turned a handful of people from my gym into board gamers. Get out there board gamers and move! Thanks for the video. Keep them coming!
Board gamers could use a lot more exercise. Exercise use will help your back more than a snazzy chair. Also better nutrition. Ever. On is filled with so many unfit and unhealthy people, such as shame.
I don’t want to body shame anyone. And we shouldn’t generalize. I think everyone, inside and outside the hobby (myself included) could go for eating healthier and exercising more.
