  • Men Don't Read: A Follow-Up Discussion
    ‪@AuthorJohnADouglas‬
In this follow-up discussion, I delve deeper into the topic of why men don’t seem to read as much as women and explore the societal, publishing, and cultural factors behind this trend. From a lack of male-oriented books to toxic stereotypes in the literary world, let’s have an honest conversation about why male readers are being overlooked-and how it’s impacting authors, publishers, and the book industry as a whole.

I do not get why, for the longest time, people were saying how women weren't able to break through trad publishing as though there was a gross imbalance. Is it me of they DEI-ing publishing as they have our film industry; checking off the boxes and just putting out whatever, instead really looking for the next big award winning thing no matter the content. What's wrong with a man's perspective? I don't get it... biology speaking you don't think like a female... I'm gonna get on a tangent so... okay... Male voices are being shoved aside and as a normie even i can see the shift between 20 yrs ago and today. And it's concerning.

I think moving indie is better for everyone.
Publishers don’t care about women - the authors or the readers. There are women writers who want to break the mold who don’t make the cut because they don’t cave to expectations, and there are many women readers who enjoy a variety of books from different perspectives and genres and authors. Even teens and younger women are expressing frustration and weariness at tropes and the lack of variety in what gets popular in publishing.
Publishers only care about the vocal minority of women with disposal income who will shell out hundreds to fit in with their TikTok timeline or have the appearance of advocating diversity. They don’t value books or reading or art or inclusion or any lofty ideals or values - they value trends and sales. Right now, it’s the TikTok influencers who are the cash cows.
Eventually the trend will burn itself out and the bubble will burst and who knows what will fill the resulting power vacuum.

My only hope now is that the traditional publishing system dies ASAP. They don't want men because they hate men. They act as if you are the problem when you call them out on this.

I think the big downside is that a lot of independent spaces now are trying to function like the traditional. There seems to be this weird crossover.

YA for the tropes and the trope lovers. Independent work for the good stories.

My biggest disappointment last year was a scifi book on goodreads awards being nominated and someone gave it 1 star because it features Russian space station in positive light. Not because the book is bad or good but because of political view of that one person who read it

From what I've seen, it was criticized by the booktubers who did read it for being overtly apolitical while, yes, centering a country that is currently committing a genocide, and thus failing to say anything meaningful. I'm sorry you're sad, surely this sadness is greater than one of a Ukrainian citizen who just buried his entire family (I think you'll live).

Its not just men as i saw a report a few weeks ago that a lot of the younger generation cannot read a book in its entirety even at University level. I remember a video going round with a woman complaining about a book having too many words and dont care about the majority of the book. Now if this was just a ongoing satire or serious i do not know but nowadays you can never tell 😂

I am a women and have no interest in reading newer books. I like the good old pulpy sci-fic fantasy books. Recently got into reading westerns. While there were good women writes who contribute to these genre. These older books were highly imaginative.
I would say it hard for women who don't have a certain ideology leaning to get publish either. Hopefully buying indie and used books will become big.

Any publishing house willing to create an imprint that accommodates men's interest could make a lot of money. Hopefully someone will be willing to take the unavoidable criticism to make it happen. And there is plenty of women who miss old fashion sci-fi and gritty thriller.

Even horror sections in book stores are infested with carbon copy ten a penny YA "Horror" (toxic love triangle ever present). Or big names like King. You rarely find new pure horror authors in waterstones for example. Unless its a regional thing here in the UK.

books were already a tough thing to sell and successfully men aged 18 to 25 will learn from the way they are marginalised and it will produce a generation hardened they will grow and thrive instead on memes and alternative media and x and all media that is older and indie all of this generation who become a success wont forget the way they were treated and how the younger under 18s also treated but we will see in the years to come if young men pick up the classics
