    I just recently switched my main mixing and mastering monitors for the first time in probably 10 years, from my old Adam S3X-H's to the Type 30 Mk2, and they are nothing short of incredible. Extremely revealing in all the right ways, with a sound that I find I'm preferring over just about everything else I tested them against, and any other monitors I own or work on (even my Barefoot MicroMains or the massive ATC's at one of the "major" studios i work out of occasionally). Tried them against ATC'S, Focal Trio11 Be's, Nuemann, the newer horizontal Adam monitors (which were massively underwhelming, they sound very lifeless thru analog inputs, and only sound like monitors of their price thru their AES inputs, which was an instant no-no for me), basically every set of monitors I could find for 15k (US) or less, and the Type 30's on their default settings thru their analog inputs (no linearizer, ports open, no filters or attenuation activated) sounded the best out of all of the above (and plenty more I haven't mentioned).
    The HEDD's have some fancy DSP stuff going on (like so many modern monitors), but at their core, they still have an excellent analog design without having to turn a single knob. In my opinion, the Linearizer is a super interesting idea with a great implementation, and will surely help folks in rooms that aren't well treated, but in a properly treated control room, you likely do not need the Linearizer turned on. I prefer it off 99% of the time. Though, I've found it's a fantastic tool for checking translation. The Type 30's are just amazing when it comes to their translation onto other systems.
    They are a very accurate sounding monitor with an incredible level of depth, and they present mix issues in such a clear and consistent way, far superior to the Adam S3X-H, and also Klaus Heinz' new ribbon tweeter/Air-Motion Transformer implementation for the HEDD's is much better than Adam's (or any other ribbon monitors I've heard). Adam's have that extended frequency range, but every Adam monitor seems to have a very "hyped" upper mid range that becomes very exhausting to the ears.
    Whereas with the HEDD's, there is no such problem. They have a mid range accuracy and clarity that I haven't heard on other monitors, at least not in the same way, and i can happily work on them for hours and hours without much of any ear fatigue (it helps that they stay incredibly detailed at lower volumes). There's something about the sound of the HEDD's that feels almost "acoustic", or maybe a bit more like a passive monitor in some ways.
    I think the "Closed or Ported" system may be an even more useful extra addition than the Linearizer, having the option to effectively switch between a bass-reflex system and an infinite-baffle on a whim is excellent, and they sound great in both modes.
    In my control room, I tend to prefer to keep them in their ported setup, but the closed ports are great for checking accuracy in mixes that are more bass heavy than average.
    Also, Adam's most definitely had a much more "aggressive" mid range and high end, and not in a helpful way, the new ones are the same way, hyped in a way that is very fatiguing, and actually has some odd distortions in the midrange that i measured, especially on sources like grand pianos (S3H and S5H are the new ones i tested). I find the HEDD's far more detailed sounding, no measured distortion and just incredibly flat and accurate across the board, they also reach a bit more into the ultra high and low frequencies than Adam's as well (or I should say, they stay flat til much higher in the freq range than Adam's. They both go above 40kHz, but the Adam's drop by about 8dB before 30k, whereas the HEDD's stay flat to 40k and seem to extend even a bit beyond, which seems to really keep the sound very "open".
    The build quality of HEDD's stuff is also *way* better than companies like Adam. They are certainly very beefy, and you'll need stands that can hold at least 100lbs for the Type 30's (something like the Argosy Spire 360xi stands are perfect). You can tell the quality control is top notch just from the packaging alone, but theyre so much more substantial than the equivalent Adam monitors, in everything from the cabinet density, to the driver designs, to the hand folded ribbon tweeters, to the final fit & finish and everything in between. I can't say enough good things about my Type 30 Mk2's. Utterly exceptional.

      What do you mean the Hedd's still have a great analog design at their core? Why would checking bass heavy music be the reason for using in closed mode? Did you try Dutch and Dutch 8c's?

    I recently bought the Type 07 Mk2's directly from hedd during blackfriday. I recommend buying it directly from them. They sound amazing. Hedd have updated the speakers and fixed the DSP issues that were causing them to break (when first released). Also in terms of the standby feature it can be turned off in software.

    HEDD has been doing a LOT of promotion on UA-cam in the last months, I´m living in Berlin where both HEDD, and ADAM speakers are made. Never bought the ADAM´s, because they never really impressed me. The thing about HEDD is, I don´t think they make a line I can afford. They are all VERY expensive!!!! I´m not willing to 2000€ for lower quality. So, I think I´ll stick with my Genelecs, which I´ve been using for decades, and have made a good living with.

    So your room was obviously tuned with your custom speaker system in mind. Do you think whatever issues that were addressed were of the same benefit to these monitors? You will never be able to make a good comaprison with the ones you have installed because these are intrigated in the studio (with all trimmings at 100%) so what is the point in a comparison between the HEDD's and your Studio system. Just use these HEDDs for some time mixing and mastering. And see how they then compare with your studio system. Then it might reveal something A/B ing them will never work, espacially as you are tuned to the ones you have now. And you need at least a week to get the sound of new monitors in your own mindfull system :-) Keep on pushing and hope you have fun with the Cardboar boxes!!. I own HEDD speakers and have already had to have one replaced and the other one just died. I had KRK's before these and they lasted 10 years with zero problems. Save your money and yes I can prove it. That rant having been said I will also say this: Claudius at HEDD has been one of the best customer service people I have ever worked with. Because of the manufacturing date I have to replace the DSP in both of my speakers. HEDD is sending them to me and have shared a link to a video on how to to the replacement. When these speakers work, they are truly incredible.

    • @Ian-gw2vx
      @Ian-gw2vx Рік тому +2

      I concur. I had exactly the same problem, a speaker went down after 4 months and I was devastated. I contacted HEDD and had a nice response from Freddy Knop who put me in touch with Claudius, who was incredibly helpful and patient all the way. I also was sent 2 x new dsp boards which I fitted myself. I was apprehensive at first, but the instructive video was easy to follow. I just took my time and was very careful. I did have an issue trying to remove the Adam hall xlr cable from the right monitor's socket which actually ended up breaking the socket as it just would not release. To be fair I think this issue is with the cable socket as HEDD kindly sent me a replacement which the cable also had issues with but just about unplugs with some force. So the common denominator is the cable.
      All in all, the monitors are back up and running (I have to admit I was apprehensive as its stressful opening up monitors that cost you £1500 for the pair) and sounding better than ever. I also have peace of mind that this should not happen again. If I had sent them back to the store in England I purchased it wouldn't necessarily guarantee I didn't have another dud.
      Highly recommended!

      I had issue with tweeter noise in one of my type 07, contacted support, my Hedd were over 4 years old so no warranty, but they sent a new card, turned out to be just oxygen, bit of corrosion on the volume pot, a bit ISO and they sounded brand new. Also Hedd support super nice. I use ISO all the time for my synths, just forget
      that monitors needs a bit of cleaning to

  • @Rareos
    @Rareos Рік тому +3

    Obviously only going by what your mic picked up, but the Type 07's sounded far more natural and relaxed than the Type 20's. The Quasar's were definitely more natural sounding when you switched to them from the 20's, taking into account as well that you have the highs already attenuated a bit.
    A friend of mine has the Type 07's and I have been on Dutch & Dutch 8c's for about 6 months, before that Amphion Two 18s. I was really quite impressed by the 07'S when I heard them at his place and am still considering them as a smaller 2-way pair to go alongside my 8c's. They seem like a solid mix tool, although I guess i should hear the 20s in person before passing judgment, but sounds like the better buy is defo the 07's as a second set.

    Missed the livestream so just watched the replay. For the video I'd love to see you compare AES/EBU vs. Analog on the 07s and explain the difference benefits. I have the 07s in my studio and I am wondering if I should use them with AES/EBU in the future. I'd need to upgrade my audio interface (looking at RME as well) for it so can't test it myself just yet.

    • @olly6828
      @olly6828 Рік тому +1

      The AES/EBU feature is very handy and sounds great but note that if you use the BASS 08 Sub, HEDD recommends using the analogue outputs for proper phase alignment. From the Type 07 manual page 15:
      If a BASS 08 or bigger HEDD subwoofer is used, it is preferable to use
      the analogue outputs from the sub. The HEDD BASS subwoofers have a
      Lineariser on board as well, therefore the overall bass signal is delayed
      by approximately 30 ms. They are added to the analog output so that an
      all in all linear phase Satellite-Sub-system is in place. In this very case you
      may set the switch to “for SUB”.
      The AES/EBU out of the RME UXCII or ADI-2 Pro or AIO Pro sounds excellent, and frees up your analogue outputs for other monitors. :)

      @sommerklange Рік тому +1

    The chief engineer of HEDD was previously the chief engineer for ADAM. My main monitors are ADAM S3H's and I absolutely love them! Their transient response is stunning, and I felt they were better than many other monitors I compared them to. However.... I do run a 3kHz high-shelf at -1dB to lower the tweeters a bit. I have never felt fatigued working on them all day, unlike many dome tweeters I've worked with. I have NOT heard these HEDD monitors, but I'd suppose I'd really like the Type 20's given that I already like the sound of a good AMT tweeter.

    we value your expertise to give us a review of speakers and other audio products. Obviously, it's hard to communicate what you're hearing, but you can do some test with Sandstorm by Darude, and listen to them, and see if you feel you hear what it should be sounding like. Bass amount, flat or not, the connection behinds ;), the image of the sound, etc... We would still take your advice as a good one, even though it is obvious your personal opinion, which you should state, just in case ;) You could answer questions like... if I went broke today, and all I could afford was this one monitor pair, would they do the job?... or might there be a better contender for the price?... things like that. ;)
    btw. desk filter, I guess is for the reflection of frequencies a desk can make... if bigger desk or smaller desk bounce more or less some frequencies, the know filter those.. I believe.
    btw. budget is more like sub $500 for the pair. ;) then from $501 to $1000 are another class... then $1001 to $2000 another... and I guess the last is $2001 to $999999,- :D

    A Kali three way system like the IN-5's with the superb Kali subwoofer is half the price of these speakers. So that's the question... it's a very difficult equation and basically I think it comes down to you buying the best quality speakers that you like the sound of, setting them up correcty in your room with sound treatment if you can, and then allowing yourself time to get really atuned to them. 😎

    07 MK2 + 20 MK2 둘다 사용하고 둘다 정리했습니다.
    HEDD 제품에 불량이 엄청나게 많은것을 알고 있나요?
    07 MK2 는 DSP 불량이 끝이 없었고, HEDD 본사에서 최신제품을 받았지만 다시 사용하고 싶지 않았습니다.
    20 MK2 도 새거를 뜯어서 그자리에서 테스트 했는데 두번 연속 불량이 있었습니다.
    그리고 20 MK2 (30MK2 포함) 여전히 엄청난 노이즈가 있습니다.
    05 MK2 + 07 MK2는 노이즈를 줄여놓은 DSP를 소비자 모르게 변경했습니다. 지금 판매중인 제품은 노이즈가 없지만,
    고음역대 역시 많이 줄어들었습니다.
    여전히 만듬세도 부족하고, 볼트도 제대로 잠겨있지 않을것입니다. HEDD의 조립능력이 생각보다 좋지 않습니다.
    20 MK2 역시 마찬가지고, 엄청난 히스 노이즈는 왠만한 사람들이라면 견디기 힘들수 있습니다.
    BASS 08도 사용했었는데, 마찬가지로 볼트 제대로 잠겨있지 않았고, 불량은 없었지만..
    08 -> 12인치로 중간이 없는것은 치명적입니다.
    07MK2 + BASS08 의 출력은 100db 이상 사용하기 어렵고, 빠르게 왜곡이 시작되고 클리핑이 찾아옵니다.
    20MK2는 조금더 여유가 있지만, 3WAY 모두가 히스노이즈를 함께 키워서 듣기 힘듭니다.
    1년이상 사용했고, 지금은 모두 정리했습니다.
    지금 제 주변에는 그 어떤 누구한테도 추천하지 않는 스피커입니다.

    Ordered the 07's from Thomann Music about seven months back as they were $400 less than any dealer in the US. I made sure to add special instructions regarding shipping across continents specifically requesting speakers be shipped in reinforced double boxing and packing even if I had to pay a bit more. Also sent an email immediately after processing order and also called and spoke with someone in sales support regarding my concerns and was completely assured the shipping department would be made aware of special reinforced packaging needed. Two+ weeks later two half opened boxes arrived with almost all the corners opened and the corners of speaker boxes contained within them completely caved in. Needles to say no surprise to find the corners of the MKII 07's also smashed in. And there ended my journey and foray into the world of HEDD monitors. Thanks again Thomann 🙏

      I’m not sure what you’re trying to bring across, this time. Normally you have clear focus. Your introductory words give a different picture of what is the majority of this episode. I expected a review of the HEDDs which would be great because i have the 07s. But you don’t get to that point. On the other hand you have really valuable words about the measuring at the end. When I got my 07s I too pondered the thought of buying a ref mic and software. But in the end it’s your ears that do a large part of the eq-ing and the references you use is the music stuff you think is excellent. Where one monitor excel compared to another one is the clarity, the transparancy, the detail. In my opinion the 07s are a great bang for the buck in that respect.

      That’s really odd, considering that the Hedds come with the top and bottom covered in a polystyrene cover. This would’ve had to have been removed for the speakers to get damaged. The half opened boxes are probably because customs wanted to check that the contents matched the description. Not sure why you’d blame Hedd or Thomann for this?

      @@jamesjames77777 You're not sure why I blamed Thomann? Let's see guess I wasn't clear enough. Let's try this again. The boxes used to ship the boxed speakers in was twice the size of the speakers boxes and they did NOT contain ANY packing material whatsoever to keep the boxes contained inside from rolling all over the place. What's that mean you ask? Well the speakers were clearly bouncing around inside these much larger boxes which caused the corners of the outer box to split from impacts by loose, heavy moving boxes inside them. Why did they split you ask? Because not a stitch of packing tape was used to reinforce the edges of the huge outer boxes like any halfwit with half a clue working in packing and shipping at any major retailer would do and which UPS themselves implicitly specify in their instructions for all over seas shipping. It had nothing to do with customs checking anything since they would have opened the top of the boxes like any normal person would not by tearing open outer corners. As for the polystyrene needing to be removed for the damage to have been possible, eye roll and a "get real" as I would have mentioned something as flagrant as that. The polystyrene was very much present and also very much dented so the impacts these boxes suffered must have been fairly severe and repeated in order to get all the way through the polystyrene to the speakers corners. If this still doesn't answer the question for you how Thomann would be considered responsible if a customer goes above and beyond to request and ensure proper packing is used to safeguard expensive paid items yet is simply completely disregarded and instead said items are shipped in a clearly neglectful manner across continents, well then I don't know who's fault you think it is... I guess mine. In the end all I got out of Thomann's shitty customer service was being out $1800+ for 7 weeks while the damaged speakers were being inspected by UPS then returned oversees to Thomann and a refund submitted to my bank one speaker per week. Not sure why I'd blame Thomann... Gimme a break...

      I'm sorry if this is hard to hear
      , but I bought directly from Hedd because they actually price matched Thomann when asked and since they are the manufacturer, all items including b stock are literally new. B stock from thomann or 3rd party could be a customer return or display item, but from the manufacturer , it's always new but with very minor marks. The package arrived pristine and so did the speakers. I'm sorry to hear your situation. Complete nightmare especially for the price. Just giving you the info for future reference, not trying to kick you while down at all.

    It's funny to me to see a smoker (for example), saying that things are expensive, staying from getting good equipment or a car, and still smoking every freaking day. Did you know that the average smoker (a pack a day) spends about $238 a week on cigarettes, which is over $12,400 each year? There you go... if you smoke and haven't thought of this?... there you have a viable option. ;)

      @@Whiteseastudio interesting! I’m wondering now what is the ideal amount of fatiguing in a speaker.. if we are under the microscopes certainly it should have some amount of fatigue and if they had no fatigue something would be off. And what is the ideal amount of transient response, you wouldn’t want too much or else it would be less transient outside studio? What makes an accurate transient response and what could define the baseline. Another variable I’m thinking of is if all speakers sound the same out of the box compared to 100+ hours of music played through them. I can believe the transient thing but just can’t imagine the high end is fatiguing. I have MK 1 and if the high end is fatiguing then I’m guessing that’s exactly how it should be. Crazy idea but I’m guessing the tweeters need a warm up time.
