    She designed this instrument according to her own beliefs about what Bach intended. She is the master. It is all one piece, composer instrument and artist. We the audience can only marvel.

    As Albert Schweitzer is reported to have said, "Wanda Landowska plays the harpsichord better than anyone else plays ANYTHING."
    Whether he said it or not doesn't matter. It's simply TRUE.

    Somehow, that rather heavy, almost organ-like sound of this harpsicord adds to the musical drama.

  • @JosePedroMoutinho

    Yes! W. Landowska's interpretation it is the most fantastic I've ever heard. I think this is due not only to the interpretive qualities of Landowska, but also to the sound characteristics of her Pleyel harpsichord which leads us to a romantic atmosphere with an neo-medieval environment. It's a mix of fantasy ultra-romantic, baroque harpsichord resuscitation and mystical religiosity which the chromatisms of the work reinforces (even if this wasn't the original intent of Bach).
    Thanks!

    I never understood what the fascination was with Madame Landowska until I heard this performance. Gould, Gulda, et. al are wonderful, but this version played by Landowska in her prime obviously blows me away and the others become pale in comparison. Absolutely the most interesting and I must say exciting recording of the Fantasy I have evr heard. My best friend was an acquaintance of Landowska and her wife Denise LaRue in the '50's in Sharon, Connecticut. She liked speaking Polish with my friend

    • @danawinsor1380
      @danawinsor1380 2 роки тому

      I believe you mean Denise Restout. Also, "wife?" Maybe, but is this something we can be sure about? Maybe there is historical information I'm unaware of; if not, let's not make assumptions.

    • @daviddemers9093
      @daviddemers9093 2 роки тому +1

      @@danawinsor1380 you are correct; it was Restout. As to the reference of her "wife", all I can say is that was what my friend told me. He spent lots of time with the two of them, but this was in the 1950's. At any rate, it matters not as those relationships were and are common. If it made Mdm Landowska a better musician and a happier, more fulfilled person, great!

    Consummate goddess! Ok, the instrument leaves much to be desired, but Wanda's artistry w such a limited instrument is visceral! Glorious Lady, and what passion! As she used to say to various directors: "You play Bach your way - I will play Him as he WANTED to be played!!" Not quite, but this performance is magnetic!! Love you, Wanda!

    It would be wonderful if you could post the fugue as well. I have clear memories of how extraordinary powerful and insightful it was, and I long to hear it again. Please consider it. Landowska was unique. I doubt very much if Bach's keyboard music ever had a better a better friend or a more inspired interpreter.

    • @JosePedroMoutinho
      @JosePedroMoutinho  9 років тому +5

      Hyramess Hiramess I know the "Fugue" from the BWV 903 Chromatic Fantasy it's also essential to hear the piece as a all. But I made this video just for fun and to try the Windows Movie Maker. As it gives me a lot of trouble and time to do it, I didn't made the video of the "Fugue". I suppose I could post it, but without images (or, at least, without images composition). Maybe one day, ok?
      The Landowska was an interpreter extremely important in the recovery of interpretations of Bach's keyboard works for harpsichord (although modern, still far from the original contemporaries of Bach). But if I had to choose an interpretation of Bach's keyboard works, I would have to choose the ones that are interpreted in original harpsichords (or good copies). Of course interpretations in piano are also legitimate and very good. Both interpretation styles are merely different from one another and it is important the listener take it into consideration. Thanks for you comment and continuations of good auditions!

      THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I have bookmarked this precious link, and hope to keep it till End of Days. ;-) Angel reissued Landowska's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue (the 1935 recording, I believe) along with her Italian Concerto in their Great Recordings of the Century series back in the early 1960's. Alas! My copy was lost many years ago. I am a well-trained pianist, myself, now 75-years old, and I can honestly say I have never heard a recorded performance of ANYTHING that touched and stimulated my imagination more than this.

Without the zeal she possessed people to this day would not be as knowledgeable concerning the harpsichord and the beautiful music that can come from such a wonderful instrument. We all owe this wonderful lady a debt of gratitude! I am sure she is playing a harpsichord in the great beyond and as such her music is pleasing to the ear of G-d !

    It is important to say, the harpsichord was forgotten when she asks the manufacturer Pleyel and Company to adapt a Metal Plectrum Stud according to her instructions, old harpsi wasn't heavier and more difficult to tune. The harpsichord sound different with wins Landowska. she makes the first recording in 1931 Goldberg Variations. Cliché of her interpretations are used by pianists who don't know where that comes from, slowing tempo in the notes mi and fa on Prelude in C from Well-Tempered Clavier

    Of course there is a fugue that follows the Chromatic Fantasy. I know well the work of Bach and I try to have the minimum information about the works before doing uploads. But the intention was to present the great Wanda Landowska, more than the "Chromatic Fantasy" by Bach in its entirety.
    Moreover it gives me a lot of work to do videos with the weak software I have at my disposal.
    Anyway, thank you for your attention and repair. It is a way of informing people of the existence of the "fugue".

    What a incredible slide show-- this belongs in an archive. She is like a musical Salvador Dali. She probably understood music (at least the performance of it) better than Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, and the Scarlattis themselves. Yet it is the slower, simpler pieces- like a grandmother might play for her grandchildren- simple yet so perfect and polished, that will mesmerise me until I die.

    Pleyel is a stud with a structure closest to the piano, but with plectrums metal. The resonating sound that you very well observed, is due not only to the characteristics of the instrument, but also the quality of the sound recording.
    It's a "phantasmagoric" and ghostly sound, that seems out of ultra-romantic spirit - which I find particularly well achieved in this Chromatic Fantasia (as indeed should be in other works of Bach, Buxtehude, etc., composed under the called "stylus phantasticus".

    What an absolutely brilliant description of the Landowska experience! It is certain that she saw herself as part of the creative process when playing the music of the great composers. For this reason, her playing remains unselfconscious and spontaneous; it's certainly not "stuck" in some dated time-warp! I love the quote in which she described her interpretation of the Chromatic Fantasia as "incomparable"! It is indeed.

    Another mystery (to me) is the dynamics in Landowska's recordings. She apparently prefers to vary them -- as at 00:40 in the present recording, for instance. Is this done post-production, do you suppose, or during the recording session ? If so, how is it accomplished ? I imagine the microphone being moved closer to the instrument, though that's admittedly unlikely . . .

    It's true, isn't it, that Landowska's Pleyel sounds like no other harpsichord. Sometimes bell-like, often deep and sonorous (one writer here likens it to an organ, in places) -- it's not always clear when she changes register.
    And this rendition of the Chromatic Fantasy is like no other, as well. 1935. I've heard the Fugue, of course; it would be fine to have it here . . .

    I much prefer this performance to the later one ua-cam.com/video/H2FbbAUzCYA/v-deo.html Here Landowska takes us on a leisurely and lengthy dreamlike stroll, "playing" the music -- toying with it, even ? The dying notes at 4:28 are alive with something, some kind of echo or reverb ?
    Could we be hearing her voice, a ghost of the music, at several points including 5:05 ?
    Does a recording of the Fugue, from the same date or period, exist ?

    Chromatic many times is ugly.

      +Ricardo da Mata Yep. That is one of its greatest qualities. There is a theory that the full appreciation of beauty requires the contrast of ugliness. But then again, it is also said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I find the Chromatic much more 'mature' than, say, the French Suites. But then again, the French are perhaps more 'melodic'. There must be room for both maturity and melody, no?

      David Spector Ugliness has not to do with art; this is just an ideological manipulation disseminated by academies to defend modernism, which is actually primitive.

      +Ricardo da Mata All art is ugly, because the postmodern impressionism proved a failure. The nature of primitivism itself is retrograde.
