Some great insight into the game design and mechanics. Even with its design flaws in scalability I still enjoy it. Playing 2-handed is about the most I'm willing to do but perhaps a few house-rules can help it further. Cheers.
It would make him easier, but it wouldn't break him. It's a reasonable homebrew change IMO since Steady is still challenging but would allow you to use a larger variety of cards and deck builds.

I always play with your ally rules. I think its a nice restriction both as a creative constraint and for balance.
