Finally some common sense on this topic. _The New Yorker_ (and _The Atlantic)_ have been doing some of the best in-depth reporting over the past couple of years.
I sense being gaslighted here. With all due respect to Masha Gessen, I see a much greater similarity between Russia's attack on Ukraine with Hitler's invasion of Poland than with U.S. and NATO's involvement in stopping the genocide in Kosovo. Hitler then and Putin now acting on grudges and grievances in an attempt to militarily reassert lost glory believed unfairly taken away.
I think Gessen was saying that Putin is cynically copying the justifications and approach used to intervene in Kosovo - not that Putin’s justifications are in any way legitimate (or that they are the actual motive for Putin’s actions).
I agree with bailey this is Hitler in the sudeten invasion. Why should Putin stop at Ukraine why not get Baltic countries. Chamberlain famously attempted to offer "peace in our time" in response to a similar provocation. I certainly don't want war and pray the world's leaders will find an acceptable way to avoid it. Ukraine didn't ask for this anymore than any of us, but there are natural consequences to the actions of others, beyond our control. I don't know the answers, and perhaps Masha doesn't either. Listened to this for the second time, and I now understand it better and why she makes the Kosovo comparison to what is happening in Ukraine. Russia is going to take back territory lost in 1991 and reestablish the Russian empire. This makes sense to me and explains what Putin is doing in Ukraine, plus he has allies in Central Asia and will have no problem there. The Russian empire pre-1917 will be reestablished without western interference. The US should have watched what it was doing with its own imperialist activity in Kosovo and Afghanistan. Russia will now do the same with no repercussions that matter because sanctions are worthless. The frightening thing is that this same lawless activity is happening in the US with the Republican Party. Putin knows that, and he correctly sees a weaker America that will not stop him.

@@Ilus01 - North Korea is basically China's radical state. But, no, Venezuela has been run by thieving oligarchs and idiots for decades. So, it is a basketcase, and its people are very unhappy, when they aren't dying of starvation..
One thing I think Masha is not recognizing is how sanctions have made Russia a poorer country and thus limited Putin's military power. This is evident in the poor performance of Russian units and, above all, air power. Russian fighter pilots are sub standard simply due to lack of (costly) training, being allowed sub 90 hrs per year, as opposed to typical NATO pilots that starts complaining about not being able to stay current at somewhere around 200hrs per year. Russias fighter jets, necessary to obtain and uphold air supremacy, are old and despite upgrades are still inferior to what NATO forces can rely on. So, unless I'm missing something, Putin's ability to threaten other states with military intervention has been negatively affected by the ongoing sanctions and will do so even more as harder sanctions are being imposed and droves of corporations leave or stop trading with Russia. West should do the same to China. Enriching totalitarian regimes simply because they offer cheap labor and more profit is what is everything that's wrong with the global market economy.

That is the wrong question to ask, or maybe I should say: you already know the answer. Putin operates on what I would call the level of undeniability: you can't argue with war. Tanks and bombs are facts. The only way to go against that is your own tanks and bombs. And this is where the whole problem lies: nobody actually cares about Ukraine enough to want to go to war against Russia over it.The U.S. already have what they want: the russian gas export is effectively stopped, european customers will have to turn to american LNG. Biden probably can't believe his luck, because political pressure on Germany to stop the direct east sea pipeline had failed. The E.U. is pretty much unfit to go to war at this point, and NATO can't really do anything unless Putin attacks any of their partners. Personally I'm unsure what it is that Putin actually wants. There is talk about regime change, but what he technically needs is a land connection to crimea. The attacks on Kiew may just be a diversion. I would pay attention to what is going on in southern Ukraine to see what this war is actually about.

To me, living in a neigbouring country to Russia, all this is very simple. Putin is a previous KGB operater and he still has a fondness for the old Soviet Union, he just needs Ukraine back into the fold to go back to a new Soviet Union under his reign. He has never been closer to achieve his goal.
Masha is a great source of information and their ability to synthesize history, personality theory and psychology, and the events and forces at play is really unparalleled. They are able to zoom in and pan back, alternately and articulately discussing the greater historical context and the current zeitgeist of a complex culture and society. 2:00 So if the US did the same thing to force regime change in KOSOVO (US bombed Kosovo and Yugoslavia without approval and UN sanctions) then the US set the rules, and today Putin is just playing by their rules. Therefore, I have to conclude Putin has a point. He's just playing by their rules. The US' "do as I say not as I do" doesn't cut it not to mention is the mark of dictatorship.
I'm afraid the rules are changing with every conflict, Monique. The US and therefore NATO, and since yesterday the EU, proposed a membership for Ukraine. Well, of one thing I'm sure and that is that in the world of mr Putin this will NEVER happen. And that's why he's invading Ukraine right now. My commiseration with the people of Ukraine.
One thing I have learnt is that international law is for the weak and I am saying this because after the fall of the Soviet Union the United States and nato attacked Kosovo which is also a country in Europe. Nato didn't even seek resolution from the UN security counsel. At that time Russia tried its best for nato to seek a resolution from the UN but it failed because Russia was weak and Nato didn't care about what Russia and the small countries in the UN thought. And I think what the Russians learnt was that in this unipolar world led by the USA, strength trumps international order and they saw this in iraq and in Libya etc. despite protest by Russia. This is why Russia sees NATO guarantees as shit because when you don't have strength you have no place to speak in the UN. Just look at the permanent members of the UN security Council, they are the world's most powerful military countries.
When Russia complained about intervention without approval of UNSC, it was not about Yugoslavia, it was to let NATO know that if NATO can break the law - everyone can, including Russia. And that's exactly what's going on now, and that's exactly what other nuclear forces will do in the future.
So does Trump, they want to live in the 1950's Mad Men era again when "men were men" LOL. Nah, ya just can't get a date without paying by the hour dudes, that's how unattractive you are.

Bill Clinton started rolling back democracy substantially while becoming more populist via endless polls. Meanwhile Newt Gingrich began the takeover of Congress by dark money. As soon as GW Bush Jr was elected this man became dictator in chief and openly violated international treaties and norms. Not being a good liar, he admits he got drunk on power. In occidental media, we don't easily have access to other interpretations or counter arguments.

She is amazing, and does not mince words. I love her analysis. I would simply say that I am not certain many experts thought sanctions would actually be an immediate deterrence. I believe the EU community has grossly underestimated the threat and needs to make very serious corrections now. Chamberlain famously attempted to offer "peace in our time" in response to a similar provocation. I certainly don't want war and pray the world's leaders will find an acceptable way to avoid it.

@@alanhamford2538 Absolutely! War can only be answered with war as Russia has found against NATO/USUK/EU
If governments in other parts of the world unite to sanction and “ruin” the American economy because they don’t like Trump or because the American gov/military mass murdered 2 million innocent civilians in Iraq, would Americans like/be on the side of the government’s calling to ruin the American economy/starve them?
To me, living in a neigbouring country to Russia, all this is very simple. Putin is a previous KGB operater and he still has a fondness for the old Soviet Union, he just needs Ukraine back into the fold to go back to a new Soviet Union under his reign. He has never been closer to achieve his goal.
Pootin: "The whole world is against me" No kidding. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
LMAOOOOOOOOOOO! Believe he DONT CARE at ALLLLLLLLLLLLL
More like, "the whole world is against Russia and the Russian people". Then keep the Russian people poor and isolated.
Masha is a great source of information and their ability to synthesize history, personality theory and psychology, and the events and forces at play is really unparalleled. They are able to zoom in and pan back, alternately and articulately discussing the greater historical context and the current zeitgeist of a complex culture and society. They are my go-to source in difficult (and shocking) times.
Susan Glasser is better. She also has done interview for Putin files for PBS
Simply brilliant! Finally someone with some sense.
It's not just about Putin though, it's about taking the wind out of Russia's sails and letting the country turn on itself.
Totally agree!
Like clockwork. Every 4th gen forgets the lessons of the past.
Thank you so much for speaking TRUTH.
Masha thank you!
For making it make sense.
A&C deserves more recognition
At last what looked like pure insanity makes sense, even though Putin is 100% wrong. Putin really is looking backward two decades.
three actually - this all stems from an alleged promise Geo HW Bush made regarding not expanding NATO after the fall of the Soviet Union
So does Trump, they want to live in the 1950's Mad Men era again when "men were men" LOL. Nah, ya just can't get a date without paying by the hour dudes, that's how unattractive you are.
Wow, we needed her to tell us that.

Excellent interview. Very enlightening.

Interesting history on Kosovo invasion, similarities and a bit of double standards w/ Ukraine invasion.
Other than such interviews, we simply do not comprehensive info from main stream media.

Masha Gessen Clear concise and oh so correct.
What values are we talking about here? There were no values involved in Irak, Afghanistan, Lybia…… All the monologues about values are just a pretext. No sustance
Today the office of president is not really democratically elected and the office goes rogue and outside the Constitution as does much of the federal government. It harms the whole world to have an unhinged central government.
