Love the instant feedback regarding stepping too far. This is something we’ll definitely be working on.

The footwork shown at 3:50 is very bad idea for young catchers, or any catcher who throws less than 80 mph. 1)) There is not enough forward momentum to make a strong throw. It results in rainbow throws that increase pop time. 2)) The catcher is off the line connecting home plate to 2nd base, which results in loss of left-right accuracy. Learn the jab step instead as shown in many youtube posts. A quick 6 to 12 inch jab step is almost as fast or just as fast for young catchers as swinging the right foot out to where the left foot was.

Strongly disagree. I’ve worked with youth catchers for 30 years and have seen hundreds, if not thousands, use a replace technique and get the ball to second with good velocity. They just have to be taught how to do it correctly which is when your right foot hits the ground, drive your body weight/energy toward your target.
Not only is it acceptable, sometimes it’s 100% necessary when there is a left handed batter at the plate and the catcher needs to create some space away from the batter to throw.
Additionally, I would never tell any catcher to take a 6-12 inch jab step. They need to get their foot on the ground much sooner.

I agree with you. Unless the catcher has a cannon he can use from a stand still it's always better to drive through or as you called it a jab step. Momentum gives you a harder throw, you're closer and more accurate. The technique in this video is old school and outdated imo.

@@DexterTheDuck The footwork is perfect with his right leg stagger stance with his left foot. The only time a rainbow throw will happen is when the player loses his balance and dips his back shoulder, and tries to throw over the batter, or tries to get it to 2nd base in the air. I'm teaching my 10 year old catchers to throw right through the pitchers head... if a catcher can't throw through the pitchers head with quick feet and a couple of bounces to get to 2nd then they should probably play another position. This is a game of milliseconds and the days of putting the heaviest kid behind the plate are over...
Todd, you're the man! I'm sure these guys that have criticism were really good in high school, and they do a good job of reminding everyone.... Keep up the good work Todd!

@@justinRwatson lol nobody said anything about the stagger. That tells me you don't actually understand what's going on here.
Since you're good with your catchers bouncing the ball to second there isn't much more that needs to be said.
      Have a great season coach.
