The cars from the 80's are the most impressive out of any of these. Those cars were not very aerodynamic and could still hit 200+ mph. That says a lot about the horsepower those engines were putting out.

@@CertifiedForkLiftOperator69420 The COT is still used today. The “gen 6” car is the same car with a different body over the chassis. The reason cars were taking off with the COT was the rear wing initially put onto it. Once they put a spoiler back on, that problem was fixed.

Ford Thunderbird was very aerodynamic. Those boxy GM cars weren't. They were so bad they had to whine to NASCAR to get the sloped back glass to be able to compete with the Thunderbird. Too bad I have never seen one like that on the road but you can still see Thunderbirds like that!

Side force was a cool gimmick and made the cars fun to watch just in terms of pure speed but it absolutely ruins the air. Ambrose's 203 MPH lap at Michigan isn't even the track record. Two years later in August 2014, Jeff Gordon won the pole with a lap at over 206 MPH! Currently today, the three fastest tracks are Talladega, Daytona, and Michigan. Just behind those three, Tony Stewart qualified at just over 200 MPH at Texas, and in one round of qualifying Kurt Busch turned a lap at over 200 MPH at Charlotte. If it weren't for the 550 HP package, God knows what the pole speed at Atlanta would be next year on the new pavement. I think Geoffrey Bodine's 197 MPH record is safe. If you are wondering what were the dates in which Bill Elliott set his Daytona and Talladega records. His 210 MPH Daytona lap occurred on February 8th, 1987 while his Talladega 212 MPH lap was on April 30th, 1987 (Talladega back then saw them qualify on Thursdays).

The Bill Elliott clip was from 1985. Before restrictors, he was running race laps, by himself, over 205 MPH. In 1987 he qualified at Talladega at 212.809. Now even in a draft they can't run that fast. With the restrictions on chassis and engine designs, it will be a long time before they reach those speeds again. And every time they begin to creep up on 200 MPH qualifying laps, NASCAR acts to slow them down. Their biggest concern is 3500# car catching air and going into the stands.

Even in iracing if you don’t baby the throttle the car will always come out from under you exiting the turn. So I can’t imagine how scary it would be trying to do that in a actual cup car. You can see him let up a bit then floor then do it again once he approached the straight while keeping the speed at 195+😬. If you don’t do that right your car will fishtail (like in the clip with Kasey when he comes off the turn it tries to fishtail but he corrected it perfectly and also washed up close to the wall from maintaining that pace out of the turn)
