- Bung or Sight Indicator Fly Fishing
We take a moment to look at the specific tackle, sight indicators and flies used to improve your chances of catching trout with this method.
Enjoy!
Absolute Yoda of fly fishing. I’ve learnt so many lethal techniques off you.
Hi Rhys. Watched this video over the weekend, went out this morning first time on the bung, used the smallest black buzzer I had in my box. Had 3 fish in less than an hour, lost 4 or 5.
Good ending Deri!
This video got me into trying and now using strike indicators, its now my go to when out fly fishing. Never blanked yet with an indicator. Cheers for the video.
Hi Rhys. You always talk sense! Thank you
Thank you
All the best tightlines bro. Fae Scotland.
Hi Rhys, great video. I'm new to fly fishing this year and now tie my own blobs and fish them under the fish pimp. After watching your video I have never failed with them when the going gets tuff. Thanks for sharing.
Why has this guy only 21.4k subs and why have I just come across him? More mysteries of the universe. Fantastic vids. UA-cam, sort out your algorithms!
Thanks for the kind words
Great video on indicators and how to use it. Learned a lot thanks so much for the great video keep it up its so helpful.
Great video very informative and helpful thanks for making the video
I'm not a fan of this type of fishing, but I'm definitely going to try it. I've seen how effective it is.
Rhys, I'm no competitor, but you definitely know how to catch fish. I have ordered some of those Fario bungs and indicators. I am excited to experiment with them this season!
Rhys you got yourself a new lady dude! 🤣
What line weight do you commonly fish. Those rainbows are beautiful, very robust, feisty, nice.
Commonly 7wt Paul
Solid advice in this video, looks like I've been using those sliding bungs wrong the whole time :/
it would be so helpful if could show the name / the exact model eg which fly lines cortland and airflo as shown in this video and others..it would be easier for us to buy knowing what to buy exactly. many thanks for for your wonderful and informative videos.keep them rolling ....10/10
Excellent video
Thanks Mark
Hi Rhys, very informative videos mate, can you tell me if that's the Cortland 444 SL line? Also any advice on rod choice, I have a Greys GRXI + #8 9' which is around 10 years old I think and mostly fish reservoirs such as kielder, fontburn and grassholme, is it worth investing in a new rod?
Yes that’s the one Lisa. In terms of rods, there’s a big range out there at the moment and budget/style of rod will be the biggest deciding factor as well as availability. Go with your current greys rod and see how it fare’s. I don’t believe the rod makes a massive different personally, the fly line and leader choice are far more important in my view 👍
Great video and very helpful. This video has been my reference point for trying out fishing the bung. I have certainly found it to be successful as well, albeit my hook up to landing rate is terrible. I reckon I land one fish for every five or six I hook. Do you have any views on what I might be doing wrong?
Either striking to early or too late is the most common error. Play around with both and vary it until you find what works
Hi. Great vids.. what type of flies would you fish on an intermediate line?? Regards Richard..
Lures primarily
The bung with the rubber tube insert. The ones I have say to pull the rubber tight, ie stretch it and then slide the line in behind. Then rotate so the line is opposite the slit. they don't say to run the line through the rubber tube
Cool video. Well put together.
Hi rhys love the videos very informative , I just started fly fishing and the two venues I fish are 7/ 9 feet deep and 7/ 12 feet deep. What length of leader should I use. I've been using 12ft of 8lb maxima ultra green with a static bung at the end of the loop on the fly line and and single yellow wotit( with a bit of success). I've just got some of the fario adjustable ones. Could you recommend a setup. Also should I use two flys with the bung.
Any tips for striking? Was out yesterday and got a few but lost count of how many i missed. What do you do with your line hand ect. Cheers again👍🏻
Try the strip strike Stoo. But just make sure the leader is strong enough to handle it!
Cheers mate
Hey great vids - keep them going 👍 I would be grateful if you could remind me of the fly lines , the brand etc cannot quite hear with the background
Thanks for watching Steve! Cortland Mint green, Airflo 40+ and Bario Mallard DT.
Rhys Fishes thank you
Cracking videos Rhys. Some videos fishing large reservoirs would be good. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks for watching Michael! Look out for some content at clywedog coming this summer👍
Could I use the bung on a sink tip Floater line, it's very slow sink. I have just gotten into fly fishing
Hi Rhys, I normally coarse fish but have been learning more about fly fishing recently, we went up to Clywedog on Friday before the firebreak lock down and I wish I had watched your videos before I went, definitely would have caught more! Any way, what knots do you use to tie on the bung, I assume it is directly tied onto the leader? Keep up the videos, you are going to go far!
I'll have a video out on setting up bungs rigs in the next 2 weeks which will go through static and sliding bung rigs!👍
Hi Rhys, I was just wondering what the best AFTMs for the lines you mentioned would be for the homemade yarn bung and also what size ranges of the 3 types of flies you mentioned. It's just for standard P&T rainbow fishing. Thanks bud.
I mainly fish 6/7wts and the flies are 8/10/12's.
For a yarn bung you can go lighter by choice as your not trying to throw around a lump of foam 👍
Hi mate, loving these videos, just getting back into fly fishing after doing it a briefly in my late teens 20 years or so back.
Are you on fb?
Also, is the blob or egg most effective and do certain colours work better in spring, summer, autumn and winter?
Cheers!
Both blob and egg are equally effective. Colour very much depends on the venue/water clarity and conditions so its good to have a varied range in the box 🎣
@@RhysFishes Great thanks mate. Do they work well in warmer months also or just winter? Looking to use the squirmy wormy aswell.
Spoke to local fishery today, going there in a couple of weeks to get back into it off the back of your videos 😃
Work all year but without a doubt come into their own in late autumn/winter because of the lack of natural food present for fish to preocuppy themselves with
@@RhysFishes great thanks mate, do you find eggs or the squirmy wormy is better or does it just depend ont he day? That’s last question honestly 😁
If you are on fb let me know and I can follow you on there, I don’t do Instagram 😂
Hi Rhys. I find that when I cast with a bung the bung wants to arrive on the surface before the fly. Any tips or is this to be expected?
Usually means 1 of two things. The bung is larger/ heavier than the fly itself which means that the fly follows the bung as oppose to the bung and fly travelling in tandem together. Or 2) the leader is too short between the bung and the fly. I’d say it’s likely more to be 1) thought. Tightlines 🎣
Hi Ryhs I have not long got into the bung and have found it can produce fish. My question to you is how you would fish in chocolate colour water which my local water gets a lots from a small burn that runs into it . I have tryed using the bung in this coloured water without success. But on clearer water I always have some kind of sport when using the bung . So if you could maybe let me know what would work for you in times like that ? Thanks K Brogan
I have a video on fishing in coloured water here: ua-cam.com/video/Cf89L6D4IXY/v-deo.html
Hi Rhys, any chance you could do a video on how to tie a sliding bung rig. It's easy to change depth with a sliding indicator but if using a tied bung like the Fario, it's very hard to change depths. Any ideas? I think it would be a popular video.
Hi Will. are you referring to sliding bungs such as the Fish Pimp bung?
Rhys Fishes thanks for coming back to me, I’m aware of the different indicators you can get but I’m talking about something with a hook in it. I’ve had so many hits on the clip on type indicators that I’ve started fishing hooked versions (like the fario), but these are all eyed and need tying on to withstand the fight of a fish. I’d like to fish a fario with an egg underneath but be able to easily alter the depth?
I’m fishing a small still water, I’ve had good success with a single buzzer under the bung but feel I should be getting more bites “of course” lol should I try a team of 3 buzzers?
Nothing wrong with 3 flies if the depth allows it
Great video
Great vid!
Rhys when is perfect time to use the bung?is there peak times to use the bung.ie early morning possibly flat calm?
less wind is definitely a help on the bung but its success is in how flexible it is. You could fish it 365 a year with different flies and catch! Time of day doesn't really matter.
good info, I am a newbee could you show the fly setup on the leader please
Hi graham. See my static/sliding bung video for a breakdown of the cast 👍
Sorry I found it afterwards cheers
Have never fished using a bung do you just cast and leave it or slow retrieve
Please can you show the rig as well. Ta
You can find this here: ua-cam.com/video/RPxew3VWJvc/v-deo.html
Can I ask your preferred retrieve using the bung method. What you used to catch these fish. Also you showed the flies you utilised here below the bung but in what order were they? Was the blob on the point then the worm then the egg and then the bung? Also what level are you fishing the blob off the bottom?
A lot of questions I know 😂. Just want to learn and get better at fishing 😁🎣
Loved the video
Thanks for watching Graeme. I only ever fish 1 fly under the bung, especially when it comes to eggs/blobs/squirmies. The waters i fish are heavily pressured so 2 flies under a bung is too much unless its buzzers! The retrieve is static. The instant you begin moving the bung its success falls significantly. Depth is very dependant on the day - i fish anywhere 1ft to 5ft. Its just a case of playing around to see. They may be at 1ft in the morning but drop down to 5ft once the sun is up etc...
The drug is in the tug. Although it takes more expertise and maybe equipment, nothing beats watching a line tightening, a dry being taken or a bung sliding under.
Hi could anyone give me some advise for fishing this method in the summer months?
It works very similar but just replace the flies with buzzers more often than not. Winter flies will also still work, just not as effectively
nice one rhys good video and how to fish a blobb and bung keep um coming
Thanks for watching Raymond!
Brilliant,
Really came here to find out how to tie a fario bung and two flies on a dropper!
Do you fish this method all year round would it work with team nymphs
Yes Patrick, in winter you'd fish the nasty stuff (blobs/eggs etc..) and in Spring Summer, use buzzers. The set up doesn't change. Only the flies. thanks for watching!
Bonjour, what length of leader would one use when fishing like this. Adios. Eggsalant video :-)
Anything really. Think of it like this - 6ft to the first fly(bung) and then the remaining length will depend on where the fish are feeding. I.e if they're feeding 2ft down your total leader length would be just 8ft. If they're feeding 12 ft down then you may only need 3/4ft from the bung to the fly line, followed by 12ft to the fly = 16ft leader 👍
Can you fish a bung with nymphs
Nothing stopping you rhys. I'd opt for buzzers under the bung more often than nymphs👍
@@RhysFishes thanks will try buzzers as getting back into fly fishing after year's out so much has changed since then
Rhys, which Airflow 40+ line?
40+ floating
Hi there what’s names of flys Rhys cheers
Chewing gum worms, eggs and blobs
Rhys Fishes was out Today trying the washing line cast... must say it’s a great way of quickly finding the fish and what depth they are. Thanks for the top tips great channel 🤟🤟
Coutland 444 intermediate is king bro.
On my river...... as a boy it was illegal to float fish for trout, essentially what this is!
On our rivers and still-waters it isn’t illegal. So we fish by the rules and enjoy what this method can offer us.
nice video but I dont like the background music, dont need it want to hear you not the sound.
Jings man that music is awful!
