Great video Daniel! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us. I got a Chas to do. {Not the broken one} I'll get to it one of these days.

Meriden native here , its pronounced "Mary den " i have a 434 1/2 great vice its been in my family for 6 decades . Of more importance are Parker shot guns , they are considered some of the most valuable and collectable shotguns out there . Parker made a couple if shotguns for the Russian czar back in the day . Parker shotguns were basically works of art . Look them up

Thanks for the info. I just purchased 7 vises this past week One was an Athol with pipe jaws. Neat vise and I look forward to restoring them all in the next few weeks. My favorite vise is Reed because I have never seen another vise of the precision and quality that my Reed has. I can literally clamp a hair securely in this smooth jaw vise! Crazy precision! Maybe the Athol will surprise?

You will love the athol. Do a quick video showing off the haul for the world? The reed smooth jaws I’ve seen have had some of the most precise faces I agree. I have a 104 1/2 4 bolt style currently up on Marketplace for sale super clean jaws. Athol combo vises are fairly rarish and are treasured by the people who use them. You will rarely find someone who uses one regularly willing to sell it

Yep I'll be YouTubing all the vises. Maybe I'll call it a "Restorathon"...HahA!

@@shopdoc some are easier then others. What part of the world are you in could be fun to bring someone else into my garage and do a restoration with someone else (and might make for a more interesting video then me talking at the camera)

I'm in Southwestern Indiana....so not even close to you! I have restored many vises but this will be my first Athol. They are not common in my area. I have restored and sold many vises and I have kept several in my shop. I use all my vises in the shop, I even restored a Parker and applied leather to the jaws and use it in my gun room as a gun vise.......works great!

It’s on the list and I will do my best. Might end up waiting till spring as it’s a bit too cold to be in the garage on my days off at the moment

Thanks for the video! I have a Parker vise no 400. Can't find any info. Does anyone know where I can gather some info on it?

You are in the right place on the Facebook groups in the files section there are a collection of catelogs and the spreadsheet with data. I believe the 400 and similar numbering systems are from the late 1890s to early 1900s I think in the 1910s there was a numbering system change and then again in 1930 was the final numbering system change

These guys are having a sale. The website isn't updated however they sent over a copy of an email showing the date.
"[Machinists2] Do you plan to eat at fall 2023 CAMS yard sale on Saturday 07 October" Thought you may like to know.

I never knew Meriden had that second pronunciation.

I’ve found words and names are all relative. Depends on if you heard it first or read it first. Plus even only 60 or so miles away can have regional accents even if mild. Ask people from Utica how it’s pronounced and then ask people who have only seen it on a map. Can be quite amusing
