I met Trey many years ago, when i worked the CD section at a Barnes & Noble.
He was incredibly cool & down to earth, buying stuff for his daughter.
I was not a huge Phish fan (I'm an EVH kinda dude), but i knew he was a great player
and quite familiar with his band (My buddy was WAY into Trey).
I remember we bonded over Hendrix, Band of Gypsys & Electric Ladyland.
I was talking about the repeating melody (comes up three or four times) in 1983.
And he sang the exact melody in perfect pitch!
    He just sounded so musical.

Great timing with this video. With their gear upgrades this year, Phish have tapped into a whole new level of creativity and inspired playing. They had a second set opener back in August that was 50+ minutes. Love Phish and love Trey.

Phish is a guilty pleasure of mine even though I'm not a Phish head. I really like Trey's phrasing and rhythmic sense, and their quirky songwriting draws me in. Pictures of Nectar, Billy Breathes and Story of the Ghost are masterpieces. Great lesson as always, Dave!! 🤘

Been curious about those weekapaug groove licks from that same video for a few years now. Thanks so much for giving a little perspective into the mind of Trey.

When it came to jamming the Allman Brothers Band were amazing. Give me them over the Grateful Dead any day.
I like Phish quite a lot as well, especially for their sense of fun.
I find the Grateful Dead's jams a bit shambolic but love 'Workingman's Dead'.

Hey, I have that same Phred Dockstar in your opening. I absolutely love that thing. It’s as close to owning a Languedoc I’ll ever get.

I just ordered one a month ago, can't wait for it to come (all signs point to it's gonna take a bit). What pickups did you get on it? Do you remember how long it took to get after you ordered it?

    • @sierratrey
      @sierratrey 2 роки тому

@@alan-daniel I bought mine in 2017. It took a good 5 or so months. The pickups were stock although the say epiphone on the back. I swapped them out for Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates. Also redid the entire wiring. I found a guy on eBay. It wasn’t fun getting in there and I’m terribly impatient but it was totally worth the hassle.

    Many thanks - great job.
I try to see Phish every year on their MSG New Years Run.
It is now pushed back to start on April 20. I have great seats. I don’t do the floor thing these days! ;)
I have had my jaw dropped open several times seeing Phish. Amazing really.
First in 1995 in Niagara Falls - they are an awesome live band.

I'm a huge Phish fan. Yes, they have released almost all of their studio albums on vinyl as reissues. Also, some of their official live albums. There are a few rare vinyl versions of records that they released in the 90s but most of their stuff was originally only on CD or cassette. I've been seeing shows since 94!

I've been trying to get into Phish for many years and I just can't do it.
    Don't know why........
I absolutely love Treys work outside the band and I also enjoy just the jams here on youtube immensely.
I have not heard a better sounding tone in any other player out there......ever.

Nice guitar, man! I’ve got the S2 Studio (it’s basically the same as yours, it just has that same neck pickup as yours in the middle position as well) in black w/tortoise shell guard too. It’s a great guitar for sure. I’ve also got an SE Hollowbody 2 which has basically become my number one guitar right now. It’s a great guitar for sure, but my S2 does feel slightly better to play. This is my first fully hollow guitar and at this point I don’t think I’ll be going back to playing only solid body guitars all the time. The hollow bodies just feel so alive to play, especially when you can get that endless sustain going with a bit of feedback. I just love them. My other main guitar is my Les Paul, which is also a fantastic guitar, but these days my dream guitar is a McCarty 594 Hollowbody. It’s got the Les Paul knob and switch layout that I much prefer to having just one master volume and one tone knob, and the selector switch is at the top of the guitar like a LP, which I find easier to do quickly in the middle of a song. And to top it off, it’s a hollowbody. Perfect guitar imo. Alright, I’m done rambling now lol, great lesson as always!

Speaking of bands covering "Frankenstein" live, I saw They Might Be Giants just KILL it live in the 90's here in Seattle. They also used it as their show closer and I was just stunned - first that they chose a song so out of left field for their genre and secondly that they and their band nailed it so perfectly.

Great video, didn't expect to see some Trey flavor on the channel. I was trying to figure out what song that first lick was from.. Was it Runaway Jim or Weekapaug by chance? If you're interested in checking out a couple shows with some fun licks, u can find official soundboard releases of Chicago, IL 6/18/94 & Hershey Park, PA 12/1/95. I believe there's Front of House cam videos on youtube as well for both of those shows.

I thought that lick was from NICU when he first played it but after seeing it in the video I'm pretty sure it is from a Down With Disease jam. Another fantastic show from that era is 12/14/95. That second set is filled with amazing music.

Really great here, I loved your videos on Blues Saraceno, now saw you've done Trey. What an incredible player that many people don't understand the greatness of. His ability to create melody on the fly is amazing- You capture the feel very well. What did you choose for your tone on this?

Jam bands are such an American thing. At least, from my German perspective, I'd say there's nothing similar in Europe. Phish - and even more so - Widespread Panic are pretty much unknown here. And while you're at it: I think you will have to throw the Dave Matthews Band into the mix. I think they should totally be filed under Jam Bad. - So how about a "The Chords of Dave Matthews" lesson next? ;-)
