- Pasquinade - a composition that imitates or misrepresents somebody's style, usually in a humorous way. It can also be described as a lampoon, satire, or parody (thefreedictionary.com).
Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) composed this piece in 1869 and it was published in 1870. I do not know Gottschalk's inspiration behind this piece, but it is definitely humorous in nature.
Ivan Davis (b. 1932) is an American classical pianist and professor of music in Miami, Florida. Most of his recordings are unfortunately out of print. I find his enthusiastic interpretations of Gottschalk's music to be quite enjoyable.
This rendition is one of the best I've heard of Pasquinade. So light and airy. The grace notes so clear and perfect. So well paced: fast enough but not rushed. I love Gottschalk and this is my favorite composition of his.
I have this recording on CD. It’s my favorite Gottschalk piece, too.
I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to this, because I love Gottschalk pieces.
love how this guy plays grace notes and trills
it's very good. as if it is above the music and his hands
as it is written
From the several pieces I've heard, Gottschalk's general style seemed to be repeating a simple, catchy theme but building it to more and more complexity as the piece goes on.
Exactly, Columbia (caprice americain) is a great example of this
This is fabulous piano music. Definitely under appreciated in today’s piano repertoire. Very difficult. Even though this has a slightly slower tempo, than many of his other pieces, the level of difficulty is still there. Love this.
This is way harder than it looks.
My father used to play this.
Une musique qui met toujours de bonne humeur !
The best part was the clinking ice cube effect.
Beautiful piece of music. Fabulous pianist.
the best Pasquinade playing ever!!
Блестящее исполнение!!!!! Браво!!!!!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I love his music. I had heard "Ojos criollos" which I really liked. Then I started listening to other things he wrote. Las nuits de tropiques symphony is amazing, and the Souvenir de Porto Rio and Habana, beautiful.
This Franco-American pianist is the father of the South-American academic music (Cuba, Brazil, etc.) !
If you like him, try and read his book of remembrance : he is a fabulous writer too !
I'm usually not the biggest fan of major pieces, but this is one of the catchiest pieces I've ever heard.
É uma perfeição!!!!! Maravilhoso !!!! Chega ser celestial !!!!
absolutely Mr Davis is the best playing all by Gottschalk
This is weird, like mixing Liszt with ragtime or something. At the same time, it's...awesome and something like a dream or fantasy come true.
yeah because it's a Pasquinade
The B theme is so wholesome and sweet. Also, I wonder if it served as an inspiration for Music Box Dancer.
Fantastic job! Wow, what performance, so inspiring!!
Is it just me, or did someone also notice Gottschalk likes flat keys a lot?
damn...i didnt realise it but now that you mentioned it...YEA!
Bravo!!!!
That moment when you realize this piece is out of your abilities lol. I was like ok I can do this. Then those trills and I'm like maybe, then overlayed Melody with trills... Oh well, Wonderful job!
How the eff do you even play the last part to bounce the keys that fast????? Trying to come back to some of my faves after not having a piano for 10 years. Love gottschalk but damn that last part got me stumped
How? Practice. Lots and lots of practice
Gosh... just imagine Gottschalk transporting two Chickering concert grands over and through the mountains of Central America in the 1850’s....
David Mehnert: and they were specially made, oversize pianos!
génial!
This whole piece is amazing, don't get me wrong. But that part in minor probably contains some of the most beautiful sounds ever created.
Pasquinade is played in polka and in a marching style.
This composition appears like the Military March of Schubert style.
Meraviglia
At 1:30 very beautiful with counterpoint.
A quienes les haya gustado este tema, pueden escuchar la versión de Monter Gunnar Larson, en su album Echo of Spyig
He doesn't even use pedal and it sounds still legato :)
Gottschalk vi dai.
I wish there were a clavecin version of this.
Brilliante❤🎼🎹💐

This piece sounds a bit like Ragtime, but it was composed before Scott Joplin was even born.
