- The British Library is the UK's national library. The library is a government-owned organization that houses one of the world's largest research libraries. It has nearly 170 million entries in every known language. It contains the largest collection of books in the world, with over 25 million titles. It houses documents and historical artifacts going back to 300 BC.
So, come along with me on a quick tour of the library's main section and see how lovely it is.

Interesting! The Library of Congress as of 2021 had over 25.1 million books. According to the British Library, it has 13.5 million printed books and e-books according to their website. As well as Wikipedia. (Google Assistant says the Library of Congress has the biggest collection of books as well when I ask it?) The British Library is the largest in the world 2nd only to the Library of Congress. The British Library harbors all sorts of history as it's the encyclopedia of all things UK and world-related. It's such a beautiful place.
I also found out surprisingly that the Library Of Congress is the older of the two Libraries. The Library of Congress was established in 1800. While the British Library was established in 1973. (Though technically the British Library was founded earlier in the late 1700s but didn't open to the public until much later from what I'm seeing.)
However, the London Library was established In 1841.
Weird, I checked wiki it says British Library is (probably) bigger with 170-200million books in the collection while the library of Congress has 173 million (that's why I say probably) 🤔
@Daniel Ealing 173 million artifacts on site. This doesn't include artifacts in its collections that may be in museums and such across the world. (Museums and other libraries do work and share artifacts with the Library of Congress here, such as the Smithsonian.)
We also know that the Library of Congress is physically larger and has far more space to store artifacts.
Not to mention, the British Library doesn't claim it's the largest on Earth. (Even in its facts and figures section.) However, the Library Of Congress right on its main web page clearly states the largest library in the world.
If it wasn't, I'm sure the British Library would dispute this. But they don't.
I know nearly 10,000 items are also added to the Library of Congress each day on average as well.
Plus, the Library of Congress also consistently has a significantly larger budget than the British Library. So it's larger there as well.
But keep in mind that these two libraries alone pretty much easily surpass any other known Library. And both are the largest in their respective countries.
Both are collecting different types of artifacts from one another, too.
Most large libraries have things unique only to that specific library.
Hence why you can access all of these things online now. The libraries basically have it where you can do your research without ever having to see the actual artifacts in person.
Personally, I don't think curators at either Library think of who's larger or them being in some type of competition either.
Both libraries are complements to your local library as one giant ecosystem of knowledge.
But the Library of Congress does, of course, post it being the largest as it draws in the crowds.
Even then, however, you have to schedule a visit. You can't just walk right into the Library of Congress without a reservation like you would visiting some restaurants. 🙂
Also, just a note, the Guinness Book of World Records also says the Library of Congress is the largest by collections. I just came across this a few minutes after replying. 😅
