Searching For A Natural High in Japan

- VICE’s Fernando Perez has long been fascinated by Shugendo: an ancient Japanese spiritual practice centered on finding enlightenment through nature. The monks who follow it are known to wander through the forests of Japan for months on end, meditate under freezing waterfalls, and stand on the edge of towering cliffs-all in an effort to bring themselves closer to enlightenment.
Determined to learn more about Shugendo himself, Perez trekked to Japan to train with a handful of monks who practice it. They led him in morning prayers, doused him with ice-cold water, and took him on a journey through the mountains of Japan. Along the way, Perez began to feel like the practice could gave him a natural high-making him energized, keeping him focused, and heightening his senses in a way he’d never experienced.

I really appreciate this..I went to Osaka for my band trip in sophomore year. It was an experience like no other. I had never felt more rejuvenated and well rested in my entire life until I went there. If I had the option to have stayed, I would’ve for six or more months. I connected spiritually when we visited the sites and got closer to nature. I will never forget the great time that I had...
One of my favorite episodes of vice

Hindu practices and this are both based on shamanic rituals that existed prior to both. It's not based on hinduism but they may have similar origins and later on it may have been influenced from Buddhism which is an offshoot of hinduism.
More correctly Buddha Dharma is a path unto itself.
@@EmptyRainbows Hindusim is a collective term for several such religions. Many of them are at odds with each with each other. Buddhism quite liberally borrows from Hinduism and has also later on given back quite a bit.
@@cidmoosa2051 Shankara borrowed heavily from the Mahayana doctrine. Buddha dharma does not need hinduisms validation; because we rely on the Sage Shakyamuni Buddha and dependent origination which is completely absent from hindu practice.
@@EmptyRainbows Are you sure? To answer the question one have traversed the length and breadth of Hinduism. Many have devoted lifetimes and are still learning. Anyways, this academic and intellectual nonsense.
I wish you the very best in your practice.
@@zurichkunst3615 Thanks. My practice is great. Also there is nothing nonsensical about using one's intellect and reasoning, to say otherwise is foolish.
It feels like a lot of ascetic practice in hinduism if not it's the same
