Waterproofing has left the chat. You will have water damage within 5 years. Even if by some miracle no water gets in, the humidity will. Theres a reason they use cement board and cover it with a waterproofing seal under the tiles. Even if grouted and installed correctly, moisture can still get underneath the tiles.
Not if you correctly use your bathroom Exhaust fan Like it is supposed to be used not just for #2 But the most important thing is to turn the fan on every time you use the shower or bathtub it takes all the humidity out of the room and you will not get mold build-up on the walls water dripping down the walls takes out all the conditions ect. Great work on the soldering. I have two questions: how freaking deep is your shower wall and second how do you plan on keeping that water tight?

Water tight caulking would bond the shelf to the tile. It moves, so it's not water tight.
