Woodland sketches is one of the works that established Edward MacDowell, as the first internationally recognized American composer. To a wild Rose the opening piece is his best known and best loved song. In addition to such exquisite miniatures, he also composed symphonic poems, orchestral suites, piano sonatas, and concertos for piano and Orchestra and, from 1896 to 1904, headed the newly formed department of music at Columbia University in New York. He and his wife spent their summers at the New Hampshire artist colony which today bears his name.
