  • Tallying up numbers for the end of the year. Remember that knowledge is power and the more information you have, the better decisions you can make. A little story time with how I started networking when I was a kid and slowly added to the network infrastructure over the years to support more users and capabilities. I currently use the Unifi Dream Machine Pro along with their access points and cameras. Works well for me.

    First of all, happy new year from Austria.
    in about 10 days we are getting a Horizon BQ-480 biding machine with a HT-80 3 side trimmer and a laminator, a Wire O Bind 3500 with a automatic punch system.
    Pretty excited about all this new things - it's a first for me (us).
    Networking is a bit different for me .. we (our company) are exclusiv printers for the Austrian Railway (ÖBB) and a renting a building on there property, they don't allow us to use our "own" internet, so we have to use their's with a lot of restrictions (No access to any router, can't give out IPs and so on)
    For Storage i Build a TrueNAS System, Ryzen based with a lot of Storage .. this free OS is best for Network Shares.

    Your backup solution could use an upgrade-on-a-budget. I'd suggest getting a couple of large capacity external hard drives and periodically swapping them out (maybe once a week or so). Make full copies of everything on your NAS and keep it in a separate location. This helps both with disaster as well as with crypto-ransom attacks.

    • @justaprinter
      @justaprinter  2 роки тому

      Good idea. I do already do weekly backups off-site. But the more backups the better.

    Hello and Happy New Year!
    What is the macmini for at the rack?
    The whole setup seems cool, I also had made the network myself, although it is a much smaller one with just an unmanaged 8port switch with the router to provide internet, a printer and 3 computers and also an old router that have guest wifi capabilities (limited bandwidth, no access to anything on our LAN). Kind of complicated for no reason because my ISP doesn't like the router with guest wifi and I had to use their own crappy one to get internet and the old as an access point for my clients.

      I forgot to mention that. I used that machine as a temporary store of files while transferring between some computers. I don't use it anymore, just sitting there for now.

    Unifi seems to be back ordered every time I decide to buy something. I just had decided to upgrade a couple of unmanaged switches for Christmas but just now they are replacing those 8- and 16-port ones with new models---which means no stock everywhere (unless you want to spend 3x for the old ones on ebay).

    One thing a I don't like about my Konica 7030 is when the machine is on stand by and a customer comes in for a few photo copies, it takes 10 minutes for the machine to warm up and make a copy. Is there any way to reduce warm up time?

    • @justaprinter
      @justaprinter  2 роки тому

      You could turn off the power save feature. But your electric bill will increase. There is something in the setup section where you can change the amount of time until it sleeps.

      BTW, I switched over to pseudo-fixed addresses, i.e. the dhcp server is configured to always assign the same address but the machine itself still does dhcp queries. For me that works just as well but still allows me to change stuff without having to re-configure each and every machine.

    I'm moving away from the unifi ecosystem because ubiquiti has a major issue with keeping things stable and bug-free. They are always looking for the next big thing to release half-baked and then discontinuing the whole line when it doesn't go like they thought.
    And there is that whole entire data leak thing that they didn't disclose until they were backed into a corner......
