Gentle reminder. When Maori took the National Government under Bolger to the Privy Council in England after being offered $1B to settle all Treaty claims which wasn't accepted, it reached a stalemate when Maori counter offered $1B to the government to take their people and leave.
During proceedings at Westminster Queen Elizabeth presented Queen Victoria's documents of Te Tiriti as it was understood at that time, aligned to Maori interpretation of Sovereignty and rights.
So much has evolved since then and I hope it keeps progressing.
I'm not saying to stay in the Commonwealth but I would like it acknowledged how it all went down before Waitangi Tribunal and associated hui were created. The culmination of many events. The Monarchy at days end kept to their bargain much to the fury and frustration of the descendants of colonists who were just greedy land grabbing opportunists. The failure of Monarchy was not monitoring their people in another land.
Because Queen Elizabeth set the situation straight, Bolger and his government were 'forced' to comply. Pakeha were outraged. The older ones still remember the dead old days and get ugly on it still but today's youth have grown accustomed to their mixed culture. It's beautiful.
My fear is it might revert to a time I don't want repeating for my grandchildren. Without those historical documents held outside Aotearoa we may not be who we celebrate today. How can we ensure trajectory will a forward motion.
Maori were in Parliament during rough times but did nothing for the people because their hands were tied and voices weak. It was angry activists that got the ball rolling. The quiet rich Maori funding various groups. Sympathetic Pakeha that were embarrassed seeing their friends' culture being shit on.
If we go Republic, we need history books in schools to tell an accurate story.
Compulsory accurate history in schools before we become Republic.

This has been my argument for years, that the crown had in fact been a constraining factor, rather than supporting issues arround land confiscation etc. Not just in New Zealand., But especially in Australia and the americas.

NZ is well-served having an external head of state whom everyone must respect but who has no political power.
As soon as you appoint a local as head of state, that position is political and its occpant is well-placed to abuse the power of head of state. The USA and Russia are two examples where Presidents have in the very recent past sought to abuse their power as Head of State. Even the apointment of a Governor General requires that the process respect the Head of State and hence respect the rules decided by the NZ parliament. And the icing on the cake is that it is a very inexpensive system for NZ.

    President Trevor Mallard?
    President Winston Peters?
    President Ardern?
    President Mike Hoskin?

So much unfounded paranoia about becoming a Republic.
Not necessary to leave the Commonwealth. Not cutting any ties with old friends.
Relatively easy process within Government to change to Republic .Not kowtowing to a foreign leader anymore and maybe, just maybe we've paid our dues to finally recognize that weve "grown up" as a mature nation .It sure doesnt mean we forget the past .On the contrary.

No it wouldn’t don’t lie. Barbados became A republic they just made the governor general president. The Prime Minister continued to remain the nations leader. The president just continues the role of governor general but without involving the monarchy and the cost of the Governor General remain the same costs of the presidency. Same story in New Zealand if you became a republic, same set up as Ireland to give a western example if you would prefer. It doesn’t expand costs if anything it saves money because you’ll never have to host his majesty as the head of state.

  • @antmagor

What the MP said about a president either being partial to the right or to the left, not having a neutral figure to call elections, absolutely not true. Look up Mary Robinson. She is a perfect example of how this isn’t true, Ireland is a parliamentary republic. The Prime Minister runs the show completely, the presidency is just like the monarch except a lot cheaper and is there with consent of the people. Mary Robinson was the labor candidate for president and just like her predecessors she left her party upon winning And devoted herself completely to the job requirements as head of state and did an amazing job as Ireland’s first female president. Mary McAlees was Ireland’s second Woman president and successor to Mary Robinson. She ran with a different party, same story. If you look at presidents from other parliamentary republic’s in Europe it’s the same story, rarely (Italy being the sole example in recent years that I remember) do you ever have their presidents making scandal because they stay out of government business the same way her late Majesty did.
