All the motor cycles made in Japan have different screws, they look similar to phillips screws but slightly different. You can find the screw drivers on line. Called JIS - Japanese Industry Standard screw drivers. It's definitely worth buying to avoid stripped out screws. Assortment of sizes.

To keep cover bolts in order (long and short), push them into the bottom of a cardboard box, with a drawing of cover shape drawn with a sharpie.

I have not used an impact driver since 1975! I actually found my at the bottom of one of my tool chest drawers! Bought it when I was 15 after I stripped a couple screws on my 1970 Suzuki Wolf!

I have a 1980 gs1000 g which I just acquired this summer. I had the same issue with the old stuck screws. I picked up a JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screwdriver and they came out no problem. I had mistakenly thought the screws were Phillips... Nope JIS #2.
You can download the x service manual and owners manual for this bike online, that's a big help too.
This is a great bike and tons of fun. Fyi. If you haven't already, get a K&N air filter... Makes a huge performance difference! 😎👍🏻

Mark alignment of shift lever to spline with black market. That way you know where it goes quickly.

Put a touch of blue locktite thread lock .

Just something to add, for those watching: touch the drain bolt, and ALWAYS crack the filler bolt. Why? On these old bikes, you want to know that you have a stuck filler bolt (it totally happens) you want to find that out BEFORE you drained all the oil from the drive...don't ask me how I learned this.

Okay why does mine not have a bolt to refill oil on top?? Has a drain plug but no way to refill?

Common sense would have covered the chrome and the asphalt with a rag first. . . Never mind, maybe next time uh.
