  • Just a quick overview of the knife shop and some of the tools I use to get the job done. This collection of knife making goodies took over 2 years to collect. You don't need all this stuff to make knives so don't be afraid to get started with what you have!

    I was bitching and moaning about not having a space to build a workshop, when while pressing apples in my carport (I make hard cider), I noticed a smallish area being used to store useless crap. Well, my bitching and moaning came to a screeching halt, and a grin of delight formed on my cider soaked lips; I found my workspace! The bench is built, and today I'm putting in lighting, and setting up the bench for the vise and a 2x42 Norse belt grinder that will arrive in a few days. Videos like this have been so priceless in giving is newbies inspiration and information in getting started on a new adventure. Thanks Mike, and all the other guys that take time out of a day to produce positive content in world currently in disarray. Keep making stuff! SKAL!

    Hi Mike, you’re my hero dude. Without your tutorials I would not be able to journey down this knife making path. It’s still frustrating and challenging as hell but that’s because I keep rushing through the process. I’ve learned to slow down instead of being impatient and rushing which causes A LOT of mistakes. Anyway, I wish you would come back and let us know how you’re doing and what you’re up to nowadays. All the best to you and the family and hopefully you’re doing well and succeeding in everything you do. Take care my brother from a different mother.

    I'm at the "bench in the backyard" stage myself. Except mine is a retired kitchen table. Have a nice wood shed out back that I can use but running power to it will be the issue to tackle this year. Just wanted to thank you, Mike. Your tutorials have taught me more in a few months than 35 years of being a knife enthusiast.

    Awesome video man! I really like how everything is around the shop and standing in the middle of it, you're actually in front of every tool. Seams like a really efficiency set up. Your knives are awesome too! Cheers!

    I just watched your video from 3 years back. I see you've upgraded your building. Very cool. I am partially retired and have dreamed of being a knife maker/leather worker and now, of course, there's kydex also. I find this information very helpful. Thank you so much!

    A HUGE tip for your knife making btw is put your dyken or machine paint, into a paint pen. it keeps u from getting smurf fingers and helps alto.

    I had limited space as well and wanted a stereo system. Boom box was tad big and not quite sound wanted. Ended up using a car stereo and speakers, 5x7's or 6x9's make quite a bit of full sound in smallish spots...oh to power it had a used Desktop PC power supply ~magically it is 12v! Priced Right BTW. Nice shop tour and keep the videos a coming.

    Mike... this video is invaluable. I am just about to finally move into my own place with a garage that I can turn into a shop and this is soooo helpful. I can tell from your videos you are a truly good guy who wants to give back to the community. Cheers and you got another subscriber from me sir.

    Another great video, Thanks Mike.
    Just a suggestion, I think you should move your compressor outside against the outside wall and build a small roof for it. I assume that it would still work in the winter and it would give you a bit more room inside.
    Take care

    We have about the same equipment. I would recommend not putting the vise and rotary table on your mill at the same time. The weight of the rotary table hanging off the side made my table sag on that side and made it impossible to tram the table.

    When designing a fixed blade knife, where should the natural balance point on the knife be located. Is this best achieved by drilling more holes in the tang to lighten the back end, or are there other methods to achieve this.

    Hey Mike! Why don't you use your surface grinder for flattening your handle scales?

    • @EkimKnives
      @EkimKnives  8 років тому

      Grinding titanium with a surface grinder is difficult. The scales wont stick to the magnet and they tend to over heat easily if you get too aggressive with it. I do want to convert the surface grinder to run 2x72 belts so I can flatten them on there a bit easier.

    • @Brian-bq2yb
      @Brian-bq2yb 8 років тому

      Yeah. I forgot about that. I just remembered that when we were running them on the surface grinder at Microtech they had them in a fixture, and under a lot of coolant flow.

    That's great man! I'm wondering how you don't have steel dust everywhere?! My shed is covered with that stuff I have to vacuum everything almost on a daily basis when I make a knife.

    • @AR-ce3yx
      @AR-ce3yx 8 років тому

      Sharp Works simply, he use water jet cut

    • @SharpWorks
      @SharpWorks 8 років тому

      andrea rovatti I thought water jet just cuts the knife blanks, but he would still have to grind the bevels in on his belt grinder

    • @AR-ce3yx
      @AR-ce3yx 8 років тому

      Sharp Works not so dusty, before discover water jet also me i was full of dust...sure Mike cleen before make video....😂👍

    • @EkimKnives
      @EkimKnives  8 років тому

      I do have steel dust everywhere. Before the video I blew a lot of it out of the shop with the air compressor lol. I also haven't had to grind handle materials in a while which helps tremendously with the dust.

    • @EkimKnives
      @EkimKnives  8 років тому

      I just started using waterjet. I never did before the albatross model. While it does help cut down some of the dust, the worst is grinding handle materials like g10. that stuff gets everywhere! Thanks for watching!

LOL I had to back up the video to make sure it said what I thought it said. Always sanitize before a shop tour. thanks for the reminder.LMAO. Too funny. Were you hoping no one saw it??

    nice table top kiln what is it like please can you do a video on it

    • @EkimKnives
      @EkimKnives  8 років тому

      Its a tiny little kiln really only big enough inside for folder blades. I was going to do a video on it but I don't have a way to test hardness yet. however, I do have a friend with a hardness tester that might let me give it a shot. All I know about it is that it gets hot fast and will harden steel. What I really need to test is how accurate it is.

      Yep. I couldn't believe it either. I thought for sure it wasn't going to work when I got it home but it did. The guy had it in his basement for 10 years unused and just wanted it gone. Definitely a lucky find!
