    Questions:
    00:20 - Why? Who is asking for this? Is it just an ego thing, no offense?

    5:25 - For the documentary, where do you plan to visit?
    6:48 - How important do you think the observance of traditional religious rites -- even if practised only two or three times a year -- is to Japanese self-identity?
    8:48 - How long will production of the documentary take?
    10:03 - I just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoy the content you're making.
    10:24 - Can't you just get a job?
    12:52 - It's important this documentary not exist instead of the vlog videos but rather alongside them.

    16:59 - What's your budget?
    17:47 - Most Japanese think that this video is for propaganda of globalizationnal SJW. Its the answer.

      Life Where I'm From X Hi. I come in from time to time to see your videos and your kids. And I actually learn more from their eyes as they catch little details that adults have gotten used to and skip over. Whoever gave you the negative comments needs a life themselves and are just jealous really. Your videos are relaxing for me. My partner who is British and has recently moved to India with me (I am Indian) works as a UA-camr too although their stuff is very ... Lol... SJW. So I love how you handled this and keep up the great work.

    What "Being Japanese" means is obviously important to you and will be an important part of your children's lives. It's something that your family could go through without us, but I'm happy to support this project so that you can bring us along on your journey.
    If you had asked me if I wanted a series of videos on homelessness in Japan I can't imagine I would have honestly said "yes," but you had a story you wanted to tell and put it out there and it's probably my favorite thing you've done.

    I love all your videos. They are masterful and it’s so painfully obvious that you put a lot of work and effort and talent into them. Please do your best on the new documentary! I’m looking forward to watching it! It’s fascinating to study the distinction between ethnos (ethnicity) and demos (nationality).

      If it's straight up hatred, I generally delete and move on, not worth my time. But even if the intention of some of the comments isn't the nicest, I do think about them and wonder. I've actually had some decent conversations with people after they've left comments that could have been worded better. I don't really think the gap between people is as extreme as some comments make it out to be, so I'd rather find some common ground. I think Yuta mentioned in his comment that he tries to think about what he would say to someone if he was talking to them in person. That how I wish people would leave comments and that's how I try to comment back in return.

      Thanks. Yeah, it'd be nice to get a pickup by some company once it's completed or complete enough that a distributor would be interested. But one of the key things I'm going for is to have it available to the public on UA-cam after 1-2 years. There are so many good documentaries that kind of sit on a shelf, not accessible by many.

    To be honest at first I was a bit skeptical about the topic, because firstly I didn't think there was really an answer that could be arrived at, secondly I wasn't really sure that everyone would necessarily give their honest perspective, and thirdly maybe it would turn into kind of a rabbit hole that maybe you wished you hadn't gone down. However after hearing you talk about your idea more, I changed my mind and think it will be good a project. Probably you won't find the definitive answer, but it seems that wasn't really your goal, and it will be worthwhile hearing from people with different backgrounds about their experiences and ideas.

    I have a friend, who has a friend, (yeah, I know), who's Japanese and Christian (and so am I, the christian part, but that's besides the point).
    They were companions (friend 1 and friend 2) on their mission in Japan. My friend is '1/4' Japanese and has always identified strongly with that part of her, but on her mission she found that most people didn't consider her to be Japanese. Which she told me was a bit of a strange experience for her.
    As for her companion, she is a native Japanese speaker, that has lived there for her entire life, as has her family who has lived there for many generations, yet on her mission she was accused of being 'not Japanese' and was questioned about her exact ethnicity because she also identifies as Christian. In that instance she insisted she was, but they wouldn't have it, apparently.
    ...and there you go, a semi-random experience! Anyhow, I wish you the best on your journey, and thank you for putting yourself out there with this documentary! I'm sure we'll all learn something from it. ^_^

    I'm not one to comment normally on any video that I watch, however, I don't really understand why it's so difficult for people to understand that a big part of this documentary is exploring what it means to "belong" and the philosophical ideology behind that. It seems pretty obvious that it's more of a thought experiment on a grander scale rather than something promoting bias and propaganda. Personally, I think it's great that you have done a multitude of videos exploring the different aspects of life that people experience even though you may not have any first hand experience with it whatsoever. So to have people bash the subject for the sake of "SJW/Propaganda/Ego-boosting" is kind of ridiculous. It doesn't make a lot of sense to put someone down because you're out there trying to learn about something from every perspective you can and trying to bring that collective perspective to people around the world to help broaden their knowledge on a particular concept and to get them to think about what it means to them. Keep up the good work!

    This was a solid explanation of your plans and I'll definitely back your project. It's also rather unusual to hear a fellow Canadian refer to Winnipeg without mentioning the cold. :)
    Regarding your children, I do have a question. You mentioned that when they turn 20 they will have to decide whether to be Canadian or Japanese Citizens. I assume this is because 20 makes them adults under Japanese Law and Japan does not recognize dual citizenship. If they choose to be Canadian citizens, but are residing in Japan at the time, do they get any special exemptions in regards to applying for Permanent residency or would it be as if they were foreigners who just arrived in the country?

    • @LifeWhereImFromX
      @LifeWhereImFromX  6 років тому +5

      Anyone who knows Winnipeg knows it gets cold, so kind of redundant :-)
      For turning 20, yes, the Japanese government no longer allows dual citizenship in most cases. The law changed in 1985 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_nationality_law. So once they turn 20, they have 2 years to choose whether to keep the Japanese citizenship or not. The Japan Times has a really good piece about the whole situation features.japantimes.co.jp/dualcitizenship/. Yes, if they choose to be Canadian citizens while living in Japan they should be able to get permanent residency quite easily. The same can be said if they renounce their Canadian citizenship.

    i'm happy you're not rushing it. anyone could "show" what people are like but alot of the time its very shallow.i think you need a decent amount of time in order to not only show what people are really like, but get them to trust you in order to show what there culture is like to them. take your time, very excited to see it!

    • @LifeWhereImFromX
      @LifeWhereImFromX  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! It's weird though, because I don't want to take time just for the sake of saying I worked on something for X number of years, so it must be important. But like you said, I think to get closer to reality, I'll need to spend time with people and let relationships develop.

    The kind of documentary you are thinking of making (or making already) doesn't seem like it's going to be a huge money maker. It makes sense to ask for funding - as it will be expensive - but I think it's an important and interesting movie to make. You don't need to justify yourself - especially if the documentary is free for us all to watch (or on Netflix etc).

    I hope your children (and everyone on this planet, actually) will never have to choose sides. Identity is not fixed, it is a constant work in progress. I'm just watching this video now and being a Japanese-born, Canadian (Toronto) -raised and living woman, I am very interested in your documentary. I haven't looked too much into your plans for it, but I thought I would quickly share my experience in case it would be of interest. My parents immigrated here to Canada because they wanted to raise their only child, daughter, in a less or non-patriarchal society. I am so grateful for this because of having been given the opportunity to be the person I am today, but also feel a disconnection with the culture and society that I feel in my mind and heart is a huge part of who I am. Also, while my mother, who has moved back to Japan, and I are very close, we have a definite language barrier. My Japanese being limited to those of a young child's and my mother's limited understanding of English. I feel like my/our story can be an interesting contribution to your documentary. Is there any possibility for us to connect to discuss?

    I love your comment about feeling how your identity changes depending on where you are. I am half Korean, half white and I looked Korean as a child and grew up with my Korean mother so all my experiences are from that lense, but now I look white and I want to identify as Korean-American, but people's expectations when it comes to that label don't match up to who I "am" I guess. Being Korean used to be my identity growing up but now it's kinda disappeared and it's hard when you feel you are something that nobody acknowledges or takes you seriously about.

    It's interesting (and depressing) to know that the term "SJW," at least in the negative, is being used outside of the United States; the toxicity has spread that far.
    "Most Japanese think this video is for propaganda or globalization." Yeah, I'm sure the person who made this comment has the authority to speak for "most Japanese." Eyeroll. As if the entire population of Japan was tuned into Life Where I'm From and is vehemently anti-SJW. Lol. (Although, Greg, it would be nice if more people watched your channel! :])

      It’s not apt at all. It lumps actual people fighting for social justice in with an extreme group of people. By linking the two groups it delegitimizes both groups. So, it’s really only apt if you hate legit people fighting for social justice AND those extreme and toxic SJW.

      Gazorpa Zorp it is really disheartening that people these days don't even bother trying to hear people out, instead they just dismiss them and claim that they are "cancer", "evil", "the reason the country is what it is now".

      Interesting how you go on about people not hearing each other out and then go straight to ad hominems implications when someone gives their perspective. How can your thought process on something change like that in 20 minutes? Baffling!

    His kids have both citizenships? I thought you can't have dual citizenship according to Japanese law, or does that only apply to foreigners applying for Japanese citizenship?

    • @sammize5768

      There's a system by which children with at least one Japanese parent can have dual citizenship until they reach some certain age. Then they have to renounce one citizenship or the other.

    Greg, regarding your discussion of identity, I think it is endemic to all of us, regardless of the genetic tree from which we descend. We want to interrogate who we are based on the perception of the past, or how we fit in with "the cool kids", but what matters is what you do with your life, and not where you came from. After all, anybody with any European ancestry has at least 2% Neanderthal DNA, You do really cool and valuable work and I appreciate it in the extreme.

    one thing west never understand.
    In the first place, Asia is a term created by West.
    I can understand Asia as a region but can't understand Asia as self-consciousness.
    This is why I prefer a kind of nationalism to the large region.
    Can I call Europe one Chinese region?
    I can force a name of a region on westerners? like North West China.
    You are North West Chinese from this day forth.
    This is the same as concept of Asia.

    • @LifeWhereImFromX
      @LifeWhereImFromX  6 років тому +1

      I also find the use of broad terms like Asia interesting. You said it's a term created by the West, which is also a very broad term. They are shortcuts for explaining some things, but I think it's important to distinguish when necessary. Growing up, Asian was often used for any country in East or South East Asia. Such as Asians like this or Asian do that. But of course when you look closely, people from the Philippines can be quite different from the Japanese who can be quite different from the Chinese. I use something broad like Europe if I want to say that Europeans are more socialist than Americans and Americans are more capitalistic. So for Asia, there's a lot of countries that have Confucian ethics, so there's a certain mindset that evolved from that.

    • @maholob3302
      @maholob3302 6 років тому

      I guess the mindset was formed by historical reasons of the country as you know.
      and countries(nations) have to repel each other because of difference of the mindset.
      Ultimately, ethnicity is decided by the difference of it, and isn't decided by so-called race actually.
      So-called West and America's values are just another mindset.
      For that reason, immigration and citizenship don't relate to form of Japanese. For the same reason, globalization can erase so-called Japan. It's possible.
      Don't you think so? I said that self-consciousness is important than so-called race but It needed persuasiveness sadly.

      I honestly have a hard time in the past justifying getting any money for what I do. And if I didn't get message from people who had positive outcomes because of the videos, I may have still thought the same way. I still don't think I deserve to make any money for what I do. I just feel fortunate that I can. It helps me feel better when I look at TV and see the content that's being produced, and how I can do something that people get something from, for a fraction of the money required. Anyways, thanks for the comment!

    • @LifeWhereImFromX
      @LifeWhereImFromX  6 років тому +5

      Who knows, it could be once it's done. But I'd wait to see the actual finished piece before judging. The plan is to mostly let the people speak, from government officials, to academics, to the Jun Japa (pure Japanese) to the rest of the Japanese, to the far-right, to the people who want to be more global. I'm really trying to get a sense of everything. Truth be told, I do love Japan and Japanese culture, so I too am wary of drastic changes. But at the same time, studying history, seeing how things are today, and looking towards the future, I think it'd be naive to say that Japan's culture hasn't changed. It's always changing. I think there are some fantastic things that the Japanese were able to preserve, but I also think there have been many things adopted from other countries that has made Japan greater than if they had remained isolated.
