    The gmrs license is applied for on line, paid for on line and the FCC e-mails you your license about a day later for you to print out. Super easy and non complicated.

    I am not sure it was made clear that FRS and GMRS interoperate on the same channel frequencies and can talk to each other. The one exception is that FRS can use all 22 channels (non repeater), but only the handie-talkie GMRS radios can also operate similarly.
    The GMRS mobiles, which can also be used as base stations, are designed to not operate on channels 8-14 which only allow 500 milliwatts (.5 watts) ERP. FRS can operate 2 watts ERP on the 462 MHz channels but the equipment is less common and more expensive. GMRS can operate up to 5 watts ERP on the 462 MHz interstitial channels 1-7, but up to 50 watts output on the main channels (15-22). The other critical difference is that FRS can only use the built-in fixed antenna, while GMRS radios can use detached antennas fed through a feedline to an external antenna, such as on the roof of your vehicle or a tower at home. The antenna can be high gain and directional if you so desire. This tremendously extends the range from say, a base to mobile. Even a mobile to mobile with external antennas can communicate much farther than FRS HT's inside a vehicle, which is very short range.
    My experience with the Chinese made Midland MXT series and Wouxun KG-805 series radios have been quite satisfactory and compare well to my ham radio equipment that operates on the nearby 440 MHz band.

      Incorrect... FRS and GMRS only overlap on channels 1-7. On these, if you use hi power, it automatically qualifies as GMRS, requiring a license. If you use low power, it qualifies as FRS, no license required.
      8-14 are FRS low power only. No license needed.
      15-22 are GMRS, license-only frequencies, whether you use low or hi power.

    I bought two tiny Walkie talkie radios. They are tiny, have a short stubby fixed antenna, 22 fixed channels and 1/2 watt of power. Seems like they would be classified as FRS radios, yet according to the manual, I need a GMRS license. Model of Radios are Uniden GRMS 520.
    Anyone know why they would be classified as GRMS?

      While they can be programmed to operate on those frequencies, they are not FCC approved. Further, FCC rules specifically prohibited having ham and FRS/GMRS transmit capability in the same radio. Those are the rules, what you choose to do is your business, not mine.

    • @carlleon1604
      @carlleon1604 2 роки тому +1

      @Anonymous Hacker I said nothing about enforcement, and you are correct that FCC enforcement is mostly a joke (note "mostly", there are many examples of actual enforcement resulting in significant fines and even jail time). However, rules exist in a society for a reason, and responsible citizens comply. I'm not telling you what to do, but it is reasonable to tell people in general what the rules are so they can make informed personal decisions.

    • @theoriginaldashriprock
      @theoriginaldashriprock 2 роки тому +1

      Anthony, legally you can't use your Anytone radio for gmrs. However no one will know if you don't tell them. The reality is that most gmrs users do not use radios that are part 95 compliant. Literally no one will know, not even the FCC.

    So there’s no test for a GMRS license, but you pay a fee? And the key distinction from FRS is that it allows you to communicate a greater distance? I’m confused on why anyone would-or should-pay a fee for this. Other than, “because it’s the rule,” what is the rationale?

    I still think the MURS radio service is a good option for some people. FRS has at time too much chatter, and short distance while MURS has greater range, less chatter and no license required. MURS only has 5 channels compared to 22 on FRS. GMRS is a better choice but for fun FRS is ok, for a little more important fun MURS is better and GMRS beats them all.

    I've seen a lot of people complaining about the fees associated with GMRS licensing, and I just don't get it. The FCC dropped the price from $70/10 years, down to $35/10 years. A lot of guides online still note the $70 fee because the change happened fairly recently (I believe in April of 2022?). Either way, reliable comms, albeit not super long range, with no need for "studying" to get a HAM license, and being able to run 50-watt transceivers, in addition to repeaters? To me it's a no brainer.
    Yes, I get the argument that radio waves are naturally occurring, so it seems stupid to have to pay to use them. But what do you expect? Uncle Sam has to get his share one way or other.

This one has 2.5 more watts than that one but you can still talk to the other radios except for these certain Chanel’s you have to have a license for these radios but not those radios but they can still talk to each other. Typically government overreach bureaucracy to create revenue because of these radios can talk for free theirs no legitimate reason to force people to buy a license for another type of radio .

FRS is for field comms; having a bunch of people junk up ham frequencies while playing their airsoft game isn't desirable, so you give them their portion of the band to do it on. Aircrafts and aircraft controllers get their own portion, commercial broadcasters get their own, people who just need radios for field comms get their own, and amateurs who use radio as a hobby get their own. It might seem like govt. overreach but having the bands separated like this and delineated by licensing ensures a WAYYYY cleaner experience in whatever band you _are_ operating in.

      @@Dirtydigger My Baofeng BF-F8HP with a Nagoya 771 antenna has been able to hit ham repeaters 25 miles away with clear audio pretty consistently, but I live in a relatively flat location. The setup cost me ~$85 and the farthest contact I've made with it was 60 miles away, off a repeater. For a hilly area though, it depends on if you're on the top of one of the hills, or below them in one of the troughs. If you're above/level with most of the hilly terrain you could probably get by with an 8w or 10w dual band radio, like the Baofeng BF-F8HP or Radioddity GA-510. *Just remember to replace the stock antenna!!* And TEST your radio to make sure you're hitting repeaters before keeping it for emergency use.
      Honestly though if you want a true failsafe, you'd be better off with a small _mobile_ (not handheld) ham radio with an antenna and power supply you can pack up and set up as you need. For that, consider a TYT TH-9800 with a cheap *quarter wave antenna* (you can make or buy one for cheap), and you can get a power supply for less than $100. Everything would probably end up costing ~$300 after everything is said and done for that. Edit: Found the QYT KT8900 which is a 25w/20w transceiver for $79, so you could probably get a mobile setup for less than $150.

The claim of 40miles is pure BS.....go ahead and try......I've also heard that some radios sold at Box Stores "kinda" use Gmrs, meaning 1 or 2 channels crosses onto their frequency, but it kinda falls into a gray area with FCC......but it's basically Still a FRS.

    How do they stop you from using the radio without a license and why do the radios have a 36 mile range if none of the channels have more than 25 mile ramge

      If you're in the USA, somebody might turn you in by reporting you to the FCC. Range of transmission is governed by a variety of factors.

      Those numbers are all marketing hype from the manufacturers! FRS radios are all .5 watt or 2 watt, and with crappy antenna. In practice, you'll be lucky to get 1/2 mile unless you are both on mountain tops or over water (perfect conditions). GMRS output up to 5w for handhelds. In practice, you may get 2 mile if the terrain is line of sight. Don't believe ANY of the claims by the manufacturers. That is pure fantasy, and frankly a flat out lie.

    I have a GMRS Midland Mxt400 radio setup in my 05 Trailblazer. I absolutely love it. I use it when camping and on road trips. I get really good range out of it. I have a 36 inch antenna and the ghost antenna. I honestly prefer GMRS and I think its the best middle ground for anyone. $70 and no test. Just pay the $70 to the FCC and good for 10 years. Thats literally $7 a year. And you can have legally up to a 50 watt GMRS radio. Mines a 40 watt and I can get range up to 100 miles if I'm broadcasting to a repeater. More then what you will get from FRS or any cb radio.

      If it hasn't happened yet it will be soon that the FCC is lowering the license fee to $35.

    Greetings, a question, I have some Motorola model EM 1000 radios of which I want to put them at their maximum power, that is, in the specifications they indicate 20 miles in open countryside and 1.8 miles in urban areas, but in reality it does not reach 800 meters of distance. distance in the urban area since it begins to be heard blurry or not even heard. Could it be configured so that it is at its maximum power?

      @BridgeComSystemsInc  8 місяців тому

      Increasing the power output of your Motorola EM 1000 radios beyond legal limits is not recommended and may violate regulations. If you're experiencing reduced range, consider factors like terrain, obstacles, interference, battery status, and antenna condition. Ensure compliance with local regulations, and if problems persist, contact Motorola customer support or consult a professional radio technician.

      3-30 MHz Amateur radio. Even low power QRP will go thousands of miles on less than 5 watts, if you are an ace antenna builder. You'll need a Technician license just to begin. General license is much less restricted. Extra Class license gives you legal limit 1,000w and all modes, all bands.
