Janacek’s Jenufa was first performed at the National Theatre, Brno on 21 January 1904. Eighty-four years later Gabriela Benackova and Leonie Rysanek sang the title role and Kostelnicka in that same theatre, where their legendary performances were heard with Czech voices and a Czech orchestra,all with the music in theirblood rather than the more refined tones of Vienna, San Francisco or New York, and the effect was unforgettable. This is the performance of 3 October 1988, conducted by Frantisek Jilek.

This is one of my favorite operas, and this recording is a perfect example of why. The clarity and beauty of the sound, as well as the emotion behind it, are out of this world.

Saw this at the Met Opera with Rysanek and Benackova it was so overwhelming I was shattered, gutted, and ultimatly transformed! I almost fainted at the end of the opera, it was then that I truly realized what the Greeks meant by catharsis.

Thank you staraman22 for posting this excellent recording. I understand that you want to say something very positive by stating "Chech voices and Chech orchestra, all with the music in their blood...." I don't want to contradict or criticize this expression, but let me share my admiration for the superior vocal and musical superiority of this recording. Despite the primitive recording technology (probably it was never mend to be published) the orchestra playing is excellent, the interpretation outstanding concerning transparency and style. This is a world class performance. There's is no performance of Jenufa from the big places you mentioned which comes close to this interpretation.
