Not a true story
When Katsumoto asks the fate of the 300 at Thermopylae and Algren says they died to the last, Katsumoto's grin is one of my favorite moments.
To die in an otherwise victorious battle that changes the course of history is perhaps the second greatest type of victory a warrior like Katsumoto can ask for.
The greatest would be to die in a hopeless battle and still win the war because your sacrifice was that powerful.
Katsumoto's death in this battle was infinitely more powerful than his survival would have been. If they had won and captured or even killed Omura, the humiliation for the Japanese government would have been immeasurable. Without Omura there to be a political bastard, the young Emperor could be tricked into signing even more deeply unfavorable treaties.
Had he lost and retreated, the last war cry of the samurai would have been silenced by Katsumoto's echoing shame. Had he been captured, it would have been confounded by the various humiliations Omura would inflict upon Katsumoto before killing him.
But by dying in this battle, by going out on HIS terms, nobody else's, charging into a hopeless battle with weapon in hand and a battle cry in his throat, his message was infinitely louder than his defeat could have been.
He just needed Algren to carry that message to the Emperor.
The Spartans at Thermopylae had a similar situation. They made the Persians pay so dearly that they bought the rest of Greece enough time to muster up their armies.
Also, the battle at Thermopylae actually had a few thousand Greeks, up to 4,000. After they were outflanked by the goat path, Leonidas commanded all non-Spartan forces to retreat and vowed to protect their retreat. 1000-1500 other Greeks stayed behind along with the 300 Spartans, and they were, to a man, slaughtered.
Total losses put the Greeks at around 2,000, including the first few days of battle, and 20,000 Persians.
Now, 20,000 is only 2% of 1,000,000, but modern estimates actually put the Persian force at up to 300,000, so that 20,000 is suddenly nearly a tenth of your force wiped out for what was barely a dent into the combined Greek military. 10 Persians for every dead Greek.
So imagine their terror when they rocked up to Plataea and saw ~100,000 Greeks staring back at them.

I think the self stabbing (seppuku), which is not only stabbing, it's also moving the blade from left to right to slice up the belly, is to simulate the worst possible death you can have on the battlefield. It's done to show, that the samurai can endure the pain and suffering, and was not fleeing from the enemy to avoid such a death. Chopping his head off is done as act of mercy, to show he has suffered enough to prove his point.
The second, the one that cuts off the head, is also there to behead the person committing seppuku before he shows pain as that is part of the ritual suicide is doing that without showing pain.
The head is not fully removed, a flap of skin is left connecting the head to the body. Only criminals are beheaded

It's actually a very complex ritual with a lot of meaning behind the choreography of it. The kaishakunin (person beheading the one committing seppuku) was usually a close friend of the person taking their own life. It was almost a performance. Occasionally, if the kaishakunin saw the samurai reach for their tonto with the intent to stab themselves, it was enough to show intent, and the kaishakunin would strike the neck of the samurai to spare him suffering. As someone else said, they were not fully beheaded, which meant the strike had to be extremely precise. Failure to do it correctly was considered a dishonor, and (I think) occasionally required the kaishakunin himself to commit seppuku.
In Japan what we call "showing your heart" is located in your stomach. You cut the belly to show you're heart to everyone. If you can make the 2nd full cut it's more impressive. It shows how determined you are.
For me this is the best Tom Cruise movie and it has one of the most beautifull and underpreciated music scores from Hans Zimmer, the emotion that the music transmits in this film is unbelievable!!!

My favorite line in the movie was when Katsumoto handed him back his journals . And said when I took these. You were....my enemy. Very powerful statement.
"I'm going to shave your eyebrows in your sleep and then I'm going to unalive you." I laughed so hard I had to pause the reaction. Why go through the trouble of shaving someone's eyebrows (while trying not to wake them) only to do them in? That came out of left field and made my day. Cheers from Florida.

This movie is far from underrated...
Underrated is perhaps the most underrated word across all of UA-cam comment sections.
Well, it only has a 66% at Rotten Tomatoes, 55% at Metacritic, and a 7/10 at IMDb. It had a production budget of $140M, yet only grossed $110M in the US and Canada. So yeah, it’s criminally underrated, IMO.
@@joeybossolo7 what reviews say about a movie doesn't mean it's underrated. The new Mario movie got ripped by most critics and made $377m in its first weekend. Review websites and what people actually think of a movie usually don't correlate with each other...

The last battle scene always makes me cry. There is no greater honor you can give to another than your respect. This is a lesson many of us seem to have forgotten. We need to learn it again.

Could not agree with you more! My favorite reaction of hers by far. She got very upset with me bc I commented on her Braveheart reaction saying she didn't fully open herself up to the movie to allow herself to feel all the elements it had to offer. Much more genuine here
I must have watched close to 20 reactions to this beautiful film and honestly it's a perfect film. Every scene is a work of art and the soundtrack is unbeatable. I cry through every reaction without fail. It seems universally too thankfully. ❤
I was more than skeptic when I saw Tom Cruise was going to star a movie called The Last Samurai. Having practiced martial arts for decades, I had a great respect for Bushi-do (Japanese way of the warrior), but I'm glad I watched the movie. It has become one of my favorites of all time.
You don't have to apologize for your words and reactions. I think they are great. In my opinion, the problem is with YT. They want to control language, creators and content and have everybody under one cookie cutter format. I think it is absurd, but sadly there is no open competing platform where we could all move to, so they take advantage of it and we have to deal with their rules.
This is one of my all time favorite movies, I love watching people see it for the first time. It really is an amazing film and super underrated imo. Great reaction!
Fun fact: The leader of the samurai rebellion, portrayed here as Katsymoto, was called Sakyo Komatsu. After he had fallen in the final battle, his companions took his head and hid it, so the enemy could never confirm that he died.

Japan, its culture, its history, and its people are so interesting, and inspiring to me. I think there are aspects which many Westerners find to be lacking in our own culture. The conflict between progress, and entrenched tradition is not uniquely Japanese, but it does make me wonder if humanity might figure out at some point, how to hold on to the best parts of both.
I think the nature of progressive politics is that of destructive youth minded revolution and rebellion, I have never witnessed preservation ever enter a progressives mind. The idea that Conservative society never progressed is non sense because the influence of trade and conflict with other nations in the history of ethnic nations added specific cultural influences in art and technology to them over time. I am not convinced that loud Cultural Revolutionary political personalities like those that caused the French Revolution or the American Cultural Revolution can be convinced to spare destroying anything because they don't like to listen to their elders who they seem to think they are so much more intuitively smarter than. The concept of all inclusivity of everything from art work to one's own gender identity these days will not allow for impressive new creations of structured "conservative" style art/music/architecture to be formed like conservative historic societies made. Progressive upstarts and activists think real human society started with their ideology and pop art, but the human race under countless civilizations and empires built up structured mature rich styles of art and architecture of their societies that can be identified thousands of years later for their form and the influences from the select other cultures who influenced their style even through conflicts. If progress was meant to be for the better then it would by nature be a much more conservative limited/controlled mature thoughtful act rather than spawned most often from destructive revolution and aggressive emotional mob activist politics which seems to catch the imaginations of individuals especially young people better than anything Conservative does. Personally I find progressive politics to be immature youth popular but lacking in thoughtful mature personal argument substance rather than what talking point arguments has been given to them by ideological mentors. If woke people came to this village they would be all over them for not using non binary pronouns or any number of other sins.
You should read the autobiography of Yukichi Fukuzawa, he was a really cool dude that had a lot of great ideas, and he lived during the time period this movie takes place.

This - for my money - is one of Tom Cruise's best films, and the story of the Samurai is a beautiful and sad one: no matter how many times I see it the final charge, Katsumotos final moments - the ''They are all perfect'' line... it always gets me!

This is one of my mothers favourite movies, I never understood why till I got older and watched it myself with a more mature thought process.

When Tom Cruise first arrives at the Samurai village, the "fever" he has is withdrawals from alcohol. He drank to stop remembering what he had done in the war. The samurai wouldn't let him continue being an alcoholic, so his body started being overwhelmed by withdrawls/remembering.
I have watched this movie a thousand times and still love it. Definitely in my top 3 movies of all time.
for those who dont know, Katsumoto's last line "they are all perfect" is also the last line in his poem that he was writing. Japanese poems, at least the most famous one - haiku, is a poem that goes on 3 lines with the first having 5 syllables, the second having 7 syllables, and the last line has 5 syllables. he does tell algren in the movie the first two lines in his poem and was struggling to find the last one
Troy(2004), Alexander(2004) and the directors cut of Kingdom of Heaven(2005) are also all great military films of the ancient and medieval world.

The film, even if it doesn't seem like it, is based on reality. The film depicts the Satsuma Uprising in 1877 led by Takamori Saigó. The battle at the end of the movie is the "Battle of Shiroyama". Captain Algren is also supposed to represent a real character. He is based on Jules Brunet, a French soldier who was hired to train Japanese soldiers. Brunet eventually fought alongside the Tokugawa Shogun. I also recommend the song Sabaton- Shiroyama.
This is also one of my favourite movies and it was so much better than I expected it to be at the time. And again, Hans Zimmer delivering an amazing soundtrack.

this movie was inspired by the story of a French general named Jules Brunet, who embrassed the rebellion and fought as a samurai. The first and only French samurai of history.
Brunet is buried now at the père lachaise cemetary in Paris.
"I think that look at the end said more than words could ever.." I had the same reaction...there are no words from a father to a dying son.
I love when Nathan forces a draw against his trainer and yer man gives a slight nod. Its like "You did it kid! You did it!"
This movie is fiction but is inspired by real events... they added an "american captain" because Hollywood... but that's how we can witness this story, through his eyes, so I think it's ok.
The character Katsumoto is based on a samurai called Saigo, his rebellion was known as the Satsuma Rebellion and the last battle where they all died was the Battle of Shiroyama. This battle was pretty much like in the movie, 500 samurai against the Imperial Army, the difference was 60 to 1. First there was a huge combat, a big massacre, and finally the last charge of the remaining 40 samurai who ended up dying under a rain of bullets. This was the end of the samurai and people start calling Saigo "The Last Samurai".
Really great movie, in my opinion this is the best Tom Cruise film.

There is a band called Sabaton they have a song about this historical events, the song is called "Shiroyama", maybe if you're interested you can listen to it.

I've discovered there's TWO Tom Cruise's... Tom Cruise the ACTOR and Tom Cruise the MOVIE STAR... While the Movie star does maybe 85% of his films once and awhile you get a glimpse of Tom Cruise the actor and he's always delivered. Rainman.. Magnolia.. Born of the 4th of July and Collateral.. Would rather see the Actor than the movie star but it seems he's having too much fun being Tom the movie star....
There is great cinema productions coming from all over the world - Korea, India, and Scandanavia are just a few ... but what Hollywood put out in the 1990s and 2000s has such universal appeal and incredible story telling that a Romanian woman like Bisscute can get so immersed in this type of movie says a lot. The Golden Age of filmmaking.

What's great about this scene is the clash of two cultures and two opposite philosophies - in eastern culture (represented by Ujio, the samurai), honor comes from recognizing when you're beaten and accepting your defeat. In western culture (represented by Algren), honor comes from never giving up no matter what, which baffles Ujio.

14:35 Seppuku is the ritual suicide of a defeated or shamed samurai. As a samurai cannot bear the shame of defeat, they take their life to retain their honor. A battlefield seppuku like in the movie uses whatever blade is available, and requires the samurai to plunge the blade into their left abdomen, and cut left-to-right, hopefully damaging internal organs or the abdominal aorta. There is a kaishakunin, usually someone very close to the samurai or, in this case, the highest ranking samurai on the field of battle, that performs the kaishaku, or ritual beheading of the samurai. Some rituals of seppuku also have the blade turned vertical after the horizontal cut then thrust upwards with hopes of hitting the heart or one of the major arteries, although the most brutal form of it is jumonji giri (literally "cross cut") where the samurai makes the left to right cut, then pulls the blade out, turns it vertically, and then plunges it back in, cutting up and across the original cut to make a cross that looks like the plus ( + ) sign.
Jumonji giri was mostly reserved for the most heinous of crimes that could still be absolved through seppuku, or when the samurai had no kaishakunin to behead them. The kaishakunin was to strike when the samurai had finished their cut, or were in danger of showing pain or crying out in pain. The kaishaku in the movie is actually a pretty bad one, as the head came completely off. A properly done kaishaku will cut the spine, most of the neck, both arteries and the trachea, but leave the muscles and skin on the front of the neck intact so the head will flop down into the chest. A full beheading like the one in the movie was reserved for criminals that were to be executed and they had no honor to maintain

If you liked this director, you should watch GLORY (1989)! Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Ferris Bueller, and Cary Elwes (among many other great actors).

This is the pride of the Japanese to honor authority and give their life for their country. Failure is not an option in this time among the Japanese. This is also what made the Japanese tough to fight in WWII.

This is such a powerful film, the scene towards the end when the soldiers bow down gives me chills every time! Definitely Tom Cruise's best movie!

I remember back in the day when my twin sister bought me this cd movie as a present for our birthday, this is a good movie, I mean the storytelling and everything, you can feel all the emotions at the same time during watching it, and since that day this movie become my top 5 playlist movie all the time. In asian culture (China, Japan etc..) white tiger symbolizes the west as in compass direction or western constellation.
I love that the intimate scene between them has no sex. Nothing against a good shaggin' but this was way more emotional, intimate and heartfelt. It was the right decision.

Answering the question about the long hair: The mage, the topknot hair style actually serves as a "cushion" to the helmet not keep scratching your head. So, there is a reason for the long hair, also the "bald" shaved upper part of the head.

A Small Measure of Peace
Saigo Takamori is known as the Last Samurai of Japan. He lived from 1828 to 1877
and followed the path of the samurai, eventually leading reform in the Meiji govern-
ment and dying for his cause. Hayashi is also regarded as the last Daimyo of Jouzai,
who fought in the Boshin war until 1868 and lived until 1941. The Battle of Shiroyama
in 1877 was fought between the Imperial Japanese Army and the last 500 remaining
members of Saigo Takamori's contingent of samurai warriors.
I think in this movie specifically the white tiger was meant to symbolize Tom Cruise's character. The white man becoming a Samurai. I think this is reinforced by the scene where he's captured by the Samurai. He is defending himself with a tiger banner.

Thanks for the great reaction. I absolutely love this film. I've been a fan of Tom Cruise for decades and this is one of his best. The performances of Cruise/Ken Watanabe are fantastic. Everyone else is perfect in their role. LOL to the swearing - hey, it's your reaction and that's fine.
Taka is one of the most beautiful women in any film I've ever seen. Her physical features are pretty, of course. But, beyond her features, she has such elegance, grace and depth; she shows respect to others, while also keeping her own perspective; and her eyes speak volumes. Women don't appear in films this way, very often, these days.
if you can find it somewhere, check out the old mini-series called Shogun with Richard Chamberlain. it's 6 parts (movies)... the story is similar but it explains a lot more of what's going on.
I have never understood why ppl tend to dislike Tom Cruise. The man is a phenomenal actor and this is his greatest performance in my opinion.
Insecure people are jealous of people like Cruise --- they will never have his money or fame or talent, so they only react with hate --- it shows all their flaws
