A friend of mine told me a great story about this song. A friend was sort of directionless and engaging in a rather sketchy partnership with a fellow he knew. They were playing fast and loose a bit and he was feeling a bit nervous about it. He got the JGB album and was listening to this song. The part that said "I heard a voice telling me to flee, the very same voice I always believe. Said a lot of trouble's coming, but it don't have to come to you" spoke to him. He told his buddy he was pulling out and he could have it all and left the area and went back and got his degree. Later on his former partner got caught and a lot of trouble came to him, but the song saved my friend.
I take screenshots of wisdom such as yours. Thanks Brother.. ill never forget this and everything I listen to Gomorrah, I'll remember it..
Nice
There is some wisdom in the Bible. Jerry was a great preacher :)
That is most certainly screenshot worthy wisdom. Getting so wrapped up in any situation that we forget to listen to , or drown out, that inner voice/ instinct/ gut feeling/ voice of God is a dangerous way to go about living. We love Jerry for a myriad of reasons and in no small part for the way he delivered the wisdom that Hunter had the gift to take from so many others and put down in a way that it comes across like shining diamonds of clarity in the lines Jerry sings. Anybody that’s ever listened carefully is better for it , and i have no doubt the songs helped many people avoid any number of treacherous paths and people. And this will be true for generations to come.🙏
Epiphany
Jerry rocks the Old Testament
best Jerry show ever
terrapinbobby bahahaha
One of the best songs they ever did.
Always remember, Jer was a good old fashioned acid-eating Chrisitian! (~);=}
Acid eating CATHOLIC...LOL...least he was forgiven....
My son is about 5 months old....he loves this song.....
My boy always liked Mississippi Halfstep when he was a baby. Lol. Our kids have good taste.
Never miss a Sunday show...
Never miss a Jerry show
God I miss this man
This is the first time i've ever heard Jerry announce a song before playing it
Listen to the Jerry G and John Kahn show from Oregon state penitentiary, great show. Right before Rubin and Cerise he says "this songs got a lot of words to it, might not... might not remember all of em"
Indeed, he must've been high A.F.
Closing of Fillmore West he calls out Johnny B Goode “this one is what it’s all about” or some such…
Jerry was touched by the Holy Ghost he wanted to share that through this Biblicly based song but he was torn as he didn’t want to come off as self righteous or preachy
Donna Jean in one version kind of mockingly says "This is a true Story"
I've always considered the song a bit blasphemous in Jerry's/ Hunter's intent in writing it. Sorta highlighting an unbelievable and supernatural cautionary tale from the Bible. Idk just my interpretation
One of the best Jerry band tunes
Full on
Just realized something. Jerry's voice is terrific here. Its 78 too.
His voice sounds like ass whatcha talking about?
Wdym 'its 78 too' ? His voice stayed sounding good until like the mid 80s
He had laryngitis that year
Mass has ended. You may go in peace
thanks to be with God
Absolutely love his voice in 77,78!!!!
What a wonderful relic,-this blurry old film of Jerry playing.
Best Gomorrah ever.
Absolutely
Other than the studio, I agree
For sheezy
7/30/77
Total perfection. This voice is what so many of us fell in love with
Jerry, have I told you today how much I love you. ❤
this song has absolute all the feels bundled up in it wow

LSD is good for you
we are in gomorrah now..... great solo bytheway...... sigh+ dang, i remember whe 40 years ago was ww II
I’m 64 years old, I went to show, with like 10 of my friends, I drove with my Chevy custom 10 that had small camper on back, 1/4 keg in back taped. Show was great I quess😊 . But driving home hi as a kite from LSD was quite the trip. I laugh about those days now a lot. And grateful God was always looking out. Yours truly Sober Danny
I’d like to have a beer and a chat with the 36 people that gave this a thumbs down. Just curious. This fucker is about as good as it gets. Donna didn’t even fuck it up. 🤷♂️
Jerry sure was a prophet! Hell he was a guitar God
Church thanks Jerry you have helped me process so much darkness. Made it possible to keep shining. Thanks to all the Old timers like Cosmic Charlie. Keep shining family.
The eleven
John Kahn and Jerry always are smiling !!!!!!!!!!!!
I've never been able to get enough of this song. Or the studio album for that matter. Cats Under the Stars in my top ten all time favorite albums. Near perfect
Palm Sunday
Remastered version with Magnificent Sanctuary Band bonus track
Jerry said "Cats" was the album he was happiest about how it turned out
So good. take me back. 77,78,.going to see JGB in these great little venues,, in between The Dead during some of there best touring years.. Cats under the Stars,an under rated gem of an album
Never met the man but I sure do miss him. R.I.P. Jerry
Just can’t get away from 3-17-78 aka the day you left the womb
Donna and Maria f-ing up what could be one of the great all time recordings ever. Later JGB with competent musicians singing backup is needed on this one.
sofa king sick. I love this man. I will always love this man.
And so does everyone else here
absolute mastery of dynamics
I recall back in the late 1980's that syndicated David Gans program The Grateful Dead Hour and in one of his interviews with Jerry Garcia, Garcia mentioned that Hunter had written this song and he (Garcia) had forgotten about it until he Garcia) was in the process of moving and found the documents and it then became (Happily) part of the Cats Under The Stars Album and Tour

Oh yeah, Donna haters make a sham of their mockery
Such a sweet version. Brings tears of joy and great memories. Seeing Jerry on Broadway was one of the best moments in my life.
I'm at a point in my life where I don't really have anywhere to go (directionless) if you will...yes I've made mistakes but that's no one's buisness. There is a greater plan for me and how that works none of my buisness....how I feel about this song (kinda) can't really explain it that's the beauty
Just ask for some inspiration from the Lord. It might help. Wish ya the best!
This is such a cool song! Too bad the video quality isn't there on this one. At least the audio is......Thank you Jerry! RIP
Take us to church Jer
Amazingly beautiful
"...because she looked behind her.."
Ken Burns could restore it, but its like Jerry landing on the moon, one small step for jerry, one giant leap for JerryKind! Cats swing in the moonlight & the black & white of NJ, Egypt
Amen.
What it feels like when all your dreams come true
niceness from the old testament
Great version of a great song. Not enough versions out there. Glad I found this one.
love ya Jerry!
I dig this
#SenorSmoke 🌫️🐉🔥 easily one of, if not, THE most adept/facile finger~plucking/pick-using artist
ThankGoodness there is such an absolute treasure trove of recordings/videos of amazing fidelity
I want to see Buddy Miller put this on one of his albums with Julie, Emmylou, and Patti Griffin singing backup.
Maria Muldaur!
This guy
Gettin' Biblical!
Jerry said he thought the song was "hilarious." I totally agree
thanks was pretty good
2020!!
Jerry talked more at JGB shows, didn't he?
Sean Sklenar He spoke a bit more at JGB shows, but still not a whole lot. He never seemed real happy about it, but with JGB he was forced to be the only front man.
quartzimaging regardless, more uncomfortable
Hullabalooo
Definitely seems like hes just talking more because it's the JERRY GARCIA band, maybe some pressure in his head to be apparently leading the audience in between tunes who knows. Not me haha
He had more fun it seemed. I feel like, JGB played mostly covers and didn't carry the heavy weight of GD song, especially if you wrote it. So, because i'm stoned, I have the gall to project and psychoanalyze how Jerry felt.
Team Earth!
Gaia
Blockbuster!
Thankyou
Like butter
smooth, sweet and just a pinch of salt
Praise the Lord, As a recent born again Christian, I created a list of GD and JGB tunes that I may if heard but now LISTEN too. Amazing Grace to Swing Low..
Be blessed my friends, offer your suffering to Jesus. He will lift you!
Eternity is a long time.
To be wrong.
💕 Love you.
J-Bird Lasley
I've always loved "We Bid You Good Night" it's a great lullaby
The Old Testament should be titled the "Now Testament" as this work proves....
How So?
Focus!
Hot enough for ya?
I wish there was a better look at Kahn's hat. It looks like a Ronnie Van Zandt gambler. Timing would jive - the plane crash was 5 months earlier.
All Donna haters report to JGB
Blake Hornsby love Donna but Maria Maria Muldour is the shinning backup star in this song. Too bad she didn’t keep following Jerry
Donna sounds like balls in this song just like all the others lol
Donna sings caterwauling...biblical
Donna haters make a sham of their mockery
@@Sound_Groove_of_America bad take
can't stay mad forever about the election. Gotta just listen to JGB!!!!
You've ruined this beautiful upload by bringing your selfish beliefs on here. Fuck you.
Nice. For my part, I am still mad also, but I know that it will work out the way it's supposed to. Nice to have such great music as a soundtrack, and a diversion.
@@moltonrocka1784 douchebag.
The election was just what the Doctor ordered.

don't you look around
Don't forget to give credit to Robert Hunter. He wrote the lyrics for almost all of Jerry's songs.
Donna, with Maria Muldaur?
I think New Jersey is part of the Holy Land
Similar to Gomorrah
Just Jerry 😅
Do you see it yet?
D.C.?
He’s struggling with words introducing the song because he got touched by God but dosent want to appear preachy.
can anyone tell me the origin of the odd sound at around @3:39? It sounds like a voice... right after, "You're lucky to get through."
+Jake Tunney A whistle?
@joesteven101 more like a "hmmm"
A voice, it sounds like? I honestly don't know, but I know what you're talking about
Probably a bass
The mystery noise to me, sounds like a sound a Fender guitar might make..Is there a 2nd guitar here other that Wolf?
