- A in depth visual tour of Caerlaverock Castle with pipe music by Gavin Maxwell and singing by June Tabor. Photos taken in 2005 & 2007 by Beth Maxwell Boyle. Surrounded by a double moat and hundreds of acres of flat marshy willow woods (known in Scotland as a "moss"), Caerlaverock was built to control the South-West entrance to Scotland which in early times was the waterway across the Solway Firth. Carlaverock Castle was the seat of the chief of Clan Maxwell.

My 4x great grandmother was Susan Melinda Maxwell McMinn whose family settled in Hendersonville, NC (she was married to James Newton McMinn.)
Thanks so much for sharing this. I may never get to see Caerlaverock Castle in my lifetime, so I will enjoy seeing pictures and videos of it!
Good one! It really does the place justice!
Can hardly wait to see it.
My 6th great grandfather, Joel P. Maxwell must have been born here. He is the one who came from Scotland to Virginia. His father was Eustace Maxwell. They were born in Maxwellton which is not part of Dumfries now, I understand. Eustace's ancestors were Earles, but I haven't been able to connect.

Aye!
Hello, good people
So a Martin cousin in Nova Scotia had a Ydna test back to our 5th great grandfather Peter in the 1749 founding of Halifax. Rumoured all these years as being from' Galway' even tho there isn't one shred of proof he was Irish. The test result showed his closest matches were Maxwell and Ramsay of the borders and 'Galloway' so we've been trying to figure that one out.
I wonder how the Maxwell-Vreeland' line fits in.
Does anyone maintain and repair this historic structure?
2nd that!
I'm a direct descendant of the 1st Lord Maxwell, along with Robert the Bruce, the early Dukes of Argyll, Earls of Mar, Lords of the Isles and plenty other clan chiefs from that time!!
Benjamin Drury cool im from a vary early side branch
I think still trying to peace it together with my dad
Lord Maxwell and Robert the Bruce as well. My Grandfather was from Belfast but i remember my father saying the above. It is on my list to come and visit but i want to research first and ask my older siblings about the history.
I had an uncle William and John.
Can someone please fill me in on my scotish past

There is information about us Maxwells, you just have to look hard for it. Depending on where you live (Scotland, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa) you can more easily access the information.
Wonder if any of us is the clan chief lol
