    We are delighted to welcome back best selling author Damien Lewis to talk about the planning for Operation Biting. damienlewis.com/ / damienlewisauthor
    In the winter of 1941, as Britain faced defeat on all fronts, an RAF reconnaissance pilot photographed an alien-looking object on the French coast near Le Havre. The mysterious device--a "Wurzburg Dish"--appeared to be a new form of radar technology: ultra-compact, highly precise, and pointed directly across the English Channel. Britain's experts found it hard to believe the Germans had mastered such groundbreaking technology. But one young technician thought it not only possible, he convinced Winston Churchill that the dish posed a unique and deadly threat to Allied forces, one that required desperate measures--and drastic action.
    Damien will talk about the connection to Operation Colossus which we discussed recently on WW2TV: • Operation Colossus - T...

    I wonder if that spirit of French resistance is still alive. I read a news article this morning reporting that the French have been stopping Russian vessels in the Channel.

    An incredible presentation. Clear, crisp, compelling ! So good! I am also deeply moved by the rare recognition given to the French Resistance. My 96 year old mother is French and I identify as French. My brother and I feel as if we had almost lived through the war because of the stories and photos of my French family and friends. Un grand Merci !!!

    I've spent hours in the last few weeks watching your previous shows Paul & I am totally blown away by your approach to this time in history. The guests you have found to help expand our perception of events & the individual people involved is simply BRILLIANT. Keep it up, because there is so much more that we can learn.

    A fascinating show about a topic which I have never heard of ...the history which ww2tv is revealing is endlessly captivating, interesting and touching. Touching because it impresses me with the beyond belief courage that so many ordinary people exhibited in rather dire circumstances. Damien Lewis is one of the best historians around; he has a gift of taking a complex historical narrative and clarify it into a story that sounds like fiction, but even better it's real! this is an A+++ show.

    Damien presented a very interesting program. Another operation that I had no knowledge of. The most impressive part to me was the meticulous planning that went into the operation--no detail too small, balanced with the risks on personnel selection etc. Very impressive planning. Anxiously awaiting the second segment. Thanks again Paul

    I unavoidably had to catch the first 20 min in my car and the story was captivating in its telling despite the setting (sans images to see). I had no background in the operation and find it both inspiring and fascinating. I'm off to explore further background in anticipation of tomorrow's livestream. Thanks to you both.

    What an interesting conversation with such a brilliant author about some of the details that went into the planning of Operation Biting. I really appreciated the mention of the role of the French resistance in the gathering of intelligence. Paul's work in reminding us of the unfinished work of internationalizing our knowledge of WWII history is very apt and an important challenge to future historians. I guess I'm going to have to learn French so that I might be able to help in this task. (My late grandmothers would have been happy that I could do so in any case) Can't wait for part 2.

    The Freya radar could turn 360dg but was crank operated by hand, (not as we know them today, where they rotate by motor/hydralic) so the crew would normally get warnings from listening post in Belgium-France that something was coming, since they could hear the engine noise, and they would start searching in direction off England, the Freyas in Denmark would get warnings from freyas in france-belgium-holland who could see the attack first

    • @richardvernon317
      @richardvernon317 Рік тому

      Absolutely, Freya in its original form was no more than a Chain Home radar that could be turned 360 degrees. The original model was totally static and the operator had to turn the Aerials to get the biggest peak on the target return to get the Bearing (the radar used a display system that worked the same way as the A Scope on the CH equipment). The Freya had no height finding capability at all, which required a second radar to get that information, that second radar being a standard Wurzberg. By 1942, the only type of Radar the Germans had that was better than anything in the UK was the Wurzberg as a Gun Layer. The first British ones were completely useless, but by the start of 1943 the British even got level with the Germans (and in 1944 overtook by a country mile).

  • @alexwild4350

    16:00 minutes in - Jones. Watson Watt when building the Chain Home system is on record as saying the British Radar system was third rate. In otherwords, it was crap and barely worked, and he knew it.
    So there were the Germans with a 'dish' on a mobile unit, and they, the British, Jones, considered they 'might' have something better than our system. Lets put Chain Home in context - it needed 300 foot high towers atleast three if not four of these and separate receiving antennas, and could not detect the height of the aircraft, and it was not steerable, mobile, or even very good. But it was enough. So do you think the Germans could have something better ?
    Infact the Germans had used an airship to explore the British Elint [Electronic Intelligence] along the coast before the outbreak of the war and saw the Chain Home towers which they thought were shore to ship communications systems because they recognised it was such a shit way to build a radar system, the British couldn't be that stupid. [Watson Watts comment]
    Radar is a complex technical subject to understand. However, to avoid all the technical issues, all you have to ask is "Where in the world is the radar system like Chain home still used ?" In contrast, all the German designs you see, ask yourself "where do you see devices like those still in use ?"
    The Germans in the air ship looking at the British Chain Home, to know it was a crap way to build a radar, must have better ideas. The British, to mount an operation like this, to steal the German Radar unit, would only have undertaken this if they were pretty sure the Germans knew more about radar than they did.
    The answer is in plain sight. No where in the world is the system like Chain Home used anymore but everywhere you look, the German units of the 1940's, even in todays world, don't look out of place.

  • @paul9832

    Great programme; what made it even 'better' / more challenging was the utterly random slides / pictures, sometimes on screen for at least a nanosecond;
    ie
    The german radar system consisted of
    Col-Remy..or was it a Freyaburg...or was it a Werz-val???
    And here's a random pic of a werzburg being operated ... and heres a colour photo of a freya-site...???
    Talk about confusing...some order would've been nice.
    If I gleaned correctly, there was a wurzburg at Bruneval BUT waa there a Freya there??
    If not, where was the nearest Freya??
    How did the Freya & Wurzburg link/inter-lock???
    'shopping-trolleys'??
    Do we mean hand-carts??
    Definately a programme for the viewr that needs to research beforehand, pause frequently, review afterwards and try to figure out what referred to what??
    It actually could've been a really slick presentation....could've provided a really good understanding of the freya/wurzburg system....
    Instead the pics/slides are so random it exudes amateurism...
    Oh...and heres some map#10 of radar stations just flashed-up Without any explanation / relevance
