Buster does look hot in this, but so does cliff. Theyre both such talented geniuses and focused in this, making it all the more deep! Never found out the name of this wonderful song though! NObody knows it!! Hate the way they had to turn it into a comic bit. Would Love to hear then do the whole song! they were friends in real life.
Historic stuff from Buster and Cliff Edwards. Cliff had such a varied sound and voice. The same voice that sung the beautiful high notes in Disney's 'When You Wish Upon A Star'.
@VisualizeJess: I guess they took out another part too: the scene where I run in the room, pick up Buster and sling him over my shoulder, and then run away with him ;)
I've seen "fiddle sticks" style duets on a fiddle, but never on an 8-string uke before! Cliff Edwards (ukulele uke) high scat improv was always great. Buster Keaton's baritone scat is terrific too... and I think the third doughboy pantomiming a bass with his rifle sings a few jug band style bass notes too. 3-part scat... shades of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross years later!
The guy playing his rifle is the director Ed Sedgwic, who plays Guggleheimer the cook in the film. He directed several of Keaton films including The Cameraman, Spite Marrage and the early talkies.
i was reading his biography. hes of small stature big on talent and genius. wrote the scripts, was acting since he was 2 and continued till his adult life...did comedy and straight roles/// He even wrote for other comedians later on although he hated it..married into hollywood royalty...then divorced and became an alcoholic. Got himself out if it..but alsas it was too late, hollywood by then was changing...Very sad...What we have passing for genius and talent is shit...He .Also built all the furniture in his mansion. Hows that for genius. The mansion was later bought over by JAMES MASON the english actor with all the furniture...he loved it.
. . .and James Mason found in a sunken room in the basement, all these old films that Buster had stored and people thought had been lost. Mason turned them over to a film preservation organization, and saved them so we can enjoy many of them on UA-cam. THANK YOU JAMES MASON!!
I recently got hooked on the ukulele, and then stumbled on this genius Keaton, so obviously this video comes up on my list. He seems to be talented at everything he sets his hand to. This generation should watch all his real-life stunts and marvel that it's not computerised rubbish
The song was performed by Ted Weems Orchestra, and there is singing, an introduction which Cliff sings, and probably two verses which is standard for the period. One of which is sung on the Weems record. The music was written by Fred E. Ahlert, lyrics by Roy Turk, the ukulele arrangement was by Milt Coleman, and the version in the movie was copyrighted on the 19th of June, 1930.

The best thing about this clip is Buster Keaton, and I include in my estimation the lucky chap who gets to play his ukulele, who tries to steal the show with his virtuosity in voice-manner, but doesn't match Buster's eyes. Look when he looks up - O, entire oceans are born.
That was "Ukulele Ike" playing the uke with sticks. He was very well known in his day and sold 70 million records(!) and acted in films. If you listen closely to the voice of Jiminey Cricket in Pinnochio, Ike is doing the voiceover AND singing "When You Wish Upon a Star". So, in that day, it was an equal pairing.
Peter, You're obviously a Buster Keaton fan and perhaps you were hoping for a more central stage performance by him here. Please don't let your love of Buster deny you the delight that is Cliff Edwards. His 'Remember' is a masterpiece - ua-cam.com/video/J7XS9UdHTOk/v-deo.html

Music used to have a smile. This is pure gold. Buster plays what is referred to as a ‘taro patch’ uke - double strung. You know these fellows hung and and played and there are photos of a young Gary Cooper with some quality Hawaiian guitars. I want a way back machine.
Thanks for posting this! It's so good~~ sounds like an early-30's-cartoon song. When I was a kid, my grandparent's summer house had an old Victrola, and our favorite 78 was a Ukulele Ike disc called "Red Hot Momma." We played it to death. He rhymed "Zigfield Follies" with "Hot Tamales!" He went on to do the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Disney's "Pinocchio."
Something funny happened watching this video. At 0:27, just as the song was about to really start, an advert next to the video played rock music and it actually fitted as a backing track to the original song!
Does anybody know the name of the song that Cliff Edwards is singing just before they all break into the scatting? I've been trying to figure it out. :^\ Thanks for posting this--this is definitely the best scene in Doughboys, and one of my favorite Buster Keaton moments EVER.
