  • For decades, Monessen, Pa., had a thriving steel industry that employed thousands of people. That all changed when the mill shut down in 1987. "Walk down the street today," says retired steelworker John Golomb, "and all you see is total heartbreak." Video/Photo: Robert Libetti/The Wall Street Journal

Monessen was doomed because it was an ore based mill at a land locked location. The rivers are not used to transport iron ore. This coupled with the advent of scrap based minimills killed towns like Monessen. There are plenty of new steel mills being built in the United States. SDI is building one is Sinton Texas right now. Economics, not Donald Trump, will dictate where those new mills are built.

It’s people like him that built modern day America. It’s sad really. Steel, coal, and factory workers feel desperate and looked over. So when someone like Donald Trump comes in and says “I’m gonna bring steel, coal, and factory jobs back” they listen.

Same here in Bethlehem Pa .
The world economy has changed , and it’s been changing for over 40 years . Those glory years of American industrial might are over , and it’s never coming back .
You ought to be smart enough by now to know that anyone running for office will string you a line of shit . They’ll tell you anything you want to here ,

No but you replaced those moving forward for McKeesport we just lucked out in a lifetime we just have the biggest marijuana grower and processor in the whole America sign a contract with us to buy up 39 Acres of the old us steel tube work and build five facilities over 500,000 square foot of growing and processing and employing over 800 to 1,000 people in the next 3 to 5 years we are already currently at 300 employees at our current three facilities and the new facilities are going to be much bigger so we're going to need a much more people much more different jobs too good paying jobs very good paying job and I am proud to say Dora Bond Industries just bought up 34 Acres of what the US Steel work facility was and they are adding on another facility and adding 75 to 100 jobs paying $25 to $32 an hour I believe so we can get jobs back and now that Joe Biden just signed that contract to bring back American jobs from China cuz we can make our own processing chips and Manufacturing our own smart technology it's time we do that and now we are going to have 20 new facilities across America so hopefully Pittsburgh gets one I think we're going to luck out and get it in McKeesport we have the land for it and last I looked the first microchip processing plant is at North Carolina and they said that is going to employ 2,800 jobs

Trump made many promises and has not fulfilled them. Vote him out for a new beginning. The USA may never be the same as it once was but maybe the cities that need it will get government help to rebuild and bring about new industry that is needed here in the usa.

.The Pennsylvania city where I grew up, has become a near ghost town since the signing of the Nafta deal signed by none other than, Bill Clinton. Cytemp Specialty Steel, in Crawford County Pennsylvania, sits empty, Pennzoil Refinery, not 20 miles away, is nothing but a huge hole in the ground, as is the Nitroglycerin/ torpedo plant. Then we move on to the Evenflo Bottle plant in Allegany County Pennsylvania, who closed down, and moved to Georgia. My town that I grew up in, is a shell of what it once was. This all happened under a Democratic Government in the state. The people who have chosen to stick around, are mostly retired people, whose children have gone off to college and never returned home.I now live in New York, a predominantly Democratic State, and fight every day just to keep my head above water. I want nothing more than to return to my home town where I lived for 42years,and raised my children. Come on President Trump. Bring back our industry, and our people. Including me!

What a silly man you are. Steel will never return to the glory days. Trump will do nothing. The mill my friend worked at for decades now has been torn down, and there is a Target and Wegmans there.

Sorry Mr. Campbell but NAFTA was a Reagan brainchild and it was signed into law by George HW. Bush Sr. Although Clinton did do the final backstabbing of the knife of the people like what live in Monessen, PA when he pushed it through Congress for its ratification. But the whole thing started with Reagan and his radical right wing neoliberal policies that have destroyed the middle class of this country. Globalization and the massive outsourcing American jobs started with Reagan as we went from the largest exporter of manufactured goods and services and the largest creditor nation in the world to the largest importer of manufactured goods and services and the largest debtor nation in the world in the space 12 small years of the Reagan/Bush Sr. Administrations. Our trade deficits exploded after Reagan got into office.
      History
President Ronald Reagan proposed a North American common market in his 1980 presidential campaign. Europe's common market, dubbed the European Economic Community, had already been initiated with the Treaty of Rome.
In 1984, Congress passed the Trade and Tariff Act, which itself built upon and amended a prior Trade Act of 1974. The 1984 gave enhanced "fast-track" authority to negotiate bilateral free trade agreements, streamlining negotiations.
In 1985, Canadian Prime Minister Mulroney agreed to begin discussions for the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. Negotiations began in 1986 and it was signed 1988. It went into effect on January 1, 1989, and remained in force until NAFTA replaced it.

I don't know bro Joe Biden just brought American jobs back he just signed an initiative that we are going to stop getting our microchips and computer technology from China and we are going to build 20 new facilities in America and by the way I'm not democrat or republican I think they're both stupid I'm for the people I want to see other people do good
