How to Identify an Original M1 Garand, Part I

- M1 Garands were the standard service rifle of the U.S. military from 1936 to beyond 1957, their last year of production. During that time, the rifle underwent 298 changes to its parts. Each part was coded with a specific drawing number that reflected each change. This video will show you those parts changes and help you identify original vs. changed or even faked reproduction parts to authenticate an original M1 Garand.

Many years ago, I read "North Cape" by Joe Poyer..about an SR71 type aircraft...years before it became public knowledge...
As usual the information has missed the mark. Gov websites can tell you the year of production and the year of issuance for the M1(if you put in a little effort). This is the serial number of my M1 I carried in Viet Nam, 7472606. After 55 years a Marine will never forget the serial number on his weapon.

GREAT video, I have a 43 Springfield the rifle stock has an A we're the (P) is the proof stamp. Who put the A there on the pistol grip?
It's an arsenal stamp from after the war and it was checked and test fired again in an army arsenal
Are the CMP garands pretty authentic I know the CMP mixs and matches parts but are the parts actually from the time period or are they after market/fake parts.

I believe that I have an all original 1943 that still has the plug in the front sight. I still need to have it authenticated.

@ superbird6bbl , Did you ever have your M1 Garand authenticated for possibly being original? What make is it? And even if it's found to have been repaired at some point in it's journey, it will always be a valuable and much sought after part of American military history. I am the proud owner of an October 1943 Springfield Armory M1 Garand, with a 1953 SA barrel , all parts are SA manufactured. Wouldn't it be great if these old M-1's could only speak of their war stories? Good luck with your M-1.

@@seanf2834 yes it is look up Scott Duff M1 Garand stuff and you'll see that the serial numbers were allotted in the Springfield plant when it was sold 1968 could start with 7 million whatever you want to do but it's there oh and after that they had to be cast they could not be milled that's a fact

most upgrades have a defective part behind them so making a m1 garand parts correct is a mistake.
People do that to make it more like it would have been as issued during WWII. They aren't using them as shooters, they are sitting in a case on their mantle.

That's not accurate. The vast majority of revisions applied to M1 Rifle components were for for the sake of improving the part (not replacing defects) or more often for improving manufacturing efficiencies. The contemporary obsession with "correcting" perfectly functional rifles is not inherently risky unless you're careless or incapable of identifying unserviceable parts.

and being changed to 30 06 caused many problems with gas system bolts exploding Operating rods being bent
even receiver cracking
recoil springs not holding up
gas operation in extreme cold
Aperature sights not holding settings
and this went on from 1932- 1942
to pearl harbor
and after.
and many came after Americans actually fielded
them in 1943.
Some parts from some armorers not being up to interchange abuility
or just plain heat and tempering being off.
and some parts just being better
A trophy rifle being best of all parts
since they made old navy pistols
That would be more better with army cylinders

Most sniper rifles were in fact 03A1s
and regular M1 Garands.with iron sights
and actual M1Ds saw more service.

If you pull open the Slide and latch bolt open
Look right under upper grip clip and see a big D
and check date being March to about july or close
1945 .
