  • Now here's a strange one. Jack Benny appearing on the Martin and Lewis Colgate Comedy hour seems like a match made in heaven. Trouble is for some reason; Jack Benny isn't given a script and just appears. There must be a story behind this...

I love this one. Makes me cry every time I see it. I wish these two had never split. They were both so good together, and you can tell they really loved each other.

Martin Lewis Well, they did for quite a few years until the friendship began to sour for whatever reason ( and everyone seems to have their own opinion as to the causes of that). With hindsight though, I feel that they both went on to do more varied things individually than the constraints of the double act allowed. Certainly, Dean in particular was really able to spread his wings and really blossom into a much more all-round entertainer as a singer, serious actor, and extremely funny comedian in his own right. He became hugely popular and much more successful as a solo act than he had ever been allowed to be as just Jerry's sidekick.

This so beautifull. I was just by the old NYC night club "Havana Madrid" club on West 51st + broadway..where they performed in early 50's. Dean really had a nice friend. So hard to figure out why the breakup.

No one ever understood the reason for their breakup, Jerry didn't even tell Patti. Their respective children do not know, i.e. they know the version given to them by their parents. It's all so strange that it's really hard to believe the official narrative. Among other things, in this skit they should have already hated each other. Do you think they hate each other? They were so tender to each other that it hurt. And there are so many "truths" about their breakup that I don't believe any of them. The truth is only one, not dozens and dozens of different truths. And I think the truth has never been told. By the way it's FALSE that they haven't spoken to each other for 20 years. Already 14 months after their breakup they spoke and met at public events several times and there were private meetings and phone calls between them until at least 1967. And after that nothing more is known. It is after 1967 that the human and professional descent of Dean Martin and Jerry began. In the early 1970's both were on percodan and Dean was addicted to alcohol and percodan. Since after his brother's death Dean Martin's long physical self-destruction began and he himself became more and more vulgar. With Jerry it was a class act. Both made it big, Dean in the USA (especially in Las Vegas), Jerry all over Europe and the rest of the world. But they've both lost what made them magical: playfulness. They had to stay together. If after 70 years we're still here laughing with those two and being moved by their story, it's because together they were special. More special than when they separated. Dean and Jerry belonged together.
