Here's my 1% Rule log for this video: - Lots of effort put into the thumbnail's composition; it stitches multiple pictures together (see the process in the Production highlight reel on my Instagram profile: instagram.com/tomfrankly/ ) - Heavy, heavy sound design - made use of a lot of panning, reverb, and clip-specific EQ to achieve a better mix - Learned how to create a rising number counter in After Effects, along with a manually-created LCD screen effect - First use of a 360 camera What is the 1% Rule? Essentially, it's the idea that you should aim to get 1% better with each piece of work you do, instead of pressuring yourself to create "perfect" work. Over time, these 1% improvements add up as long as you're consistent. More info, along with my journal for all videos, here: thomasjfrank.com/my-1-rule-journal/ P.S. - how balanced does your life feel to you right now?
You have an extra parenthesis at the end of your instagram URL ;) I'm a pretty new viewer, so take this following criticism with a grain of salt, but your videos are better at 1.25x speed or more. (i.e., feel slow at normal speed) Great stuff though!
@@rusinsr Whoops - thank for letting me know! Speed is probably the area where I'll never be able to please everyone; some people want it faster, some are non-native English speakers who would prefer me to speak even more slowly than I do.
This video actually helped me realise my acceleration addiction, I was trying to study in advance my college material and realised i was getting depressed when my pace wasn't as fast as I wanted it to be, thanks Thomas, you really helped me🥰
Just an appreciation comment for all of your support into my life all these years with your videos. I started watching you when I was a freshman in 2017. Now I'm a graduate on my 2nd job and currently starting my own company, but specially a productivity machine always learning new things and trying to be my best self. Keep up the good work Thomas
This is exactly what I needed. An unknown fear of losing has made me push myself too hard for the past couple of weeks and I have hit a stone wall, a burnout. I should start worrying about my work alone and try to keep all the burners on in a balanced way. Thanks Tom!
That metaphor though: mindlessly scrolling on social media doesn't fall into one of the burners (work, health, relationships, hobbies), it's more like poking a hole in the gasline. I mean there's a LOT of things that are the equivalent of poking holes in the gasline. But the wording of that just made my brain pull an AHA moment.
I really like what you said about the fact that we have so many possibilities nowadays. I'm very thankful to live in an age with access to so many content and be privileged enough to be able to go after what interests me, but sometimes I do feel absolutely overwhelmed by the number of things I'd like to do. And even when I'm doing a lot of these things - things that I enjoy - it often feels like I did not do enough. Thank you so much for this video, great content as usual.
I am amazed by how your videos got a lot better for the past 6 months (and started noticing it mostly after your burnout video). As someone that has watched your stuff for the past 5 years, I really appreciate that you're putting a lot of care in presenting your ideas more deeply and beautifully. And by the way, nice haircut!
Thomas, I followed your videos like 2 or 3 years ago and there is so much improvement I can say I applied to my college life, now that I finished most of it just waiting for finishing my thesis! I like your videos because they are simple, well scripted and you can see you are almost always pursuing getting better in your contents, and also for me, not a native English speaker, it is really good to hear you, because I am practicing all the time at the same time, I learn new vocabulary, phonetics, you are really good at intonation and you make yourself clear when you speak. Just thank you, great man!
The quality of this video is amazing...I've watched a lot of your videos and over time you can definitely see how much you have improved film-making wise. The colour grading of this is beautiful
Much respect to you talking about the vulnerabilities that you (and almost everyone) faced - jealousy, acceleration addiction, and attaching materialistic parameters to succes
Your videos are becoming more professional and mature looking over time. Additionally, it’s nice to see parts of your humour appear in B roll clips. I’m glad you were able to find an editor that understands and shares the same vision for each video. You allowed yourself to focus on research and script writing without a major concern for the editing of the final product. It is really tough to trust others, even with simple things, when one has perfectionist tendencies. Be proud :) And finally, thank you for sharing the process of how you made this thumbnail on Instagram.
Love that you focus on improving one thing in each video you create. This process will give marginal gains, which in the long term show huge results. I think I'll try and apply the same with my videos.
Narrowing down your craft is a good one. I feel like I've been branching out too much and not really focusing much on what I'm already good at. Thanks for this video!
I appreciate you doing a written version of this video. Since I am studying English and try to improve the language, have the written is not only another way for me to practice reading, but also to understand even more the message. I hope to see this more often.

Great practical advice. 1. Define the activities that truly make you happy. 2. Do whatever you need to do to remove lethargy from your activities. 3. Remove low impact activities that drain time (mindless surfing, binge watching)
This is a fantastic video. I love how you talk about the importance of emotional health & being able to identify the things that come from external validation. Ur productivity tips have always been helpful but this is on a different level.
WOW! Every single video is making me productive by so much! Not to mention the production value makes it fun to watch... Your amazing! Thank you for helping others
Thank you much Thomas. These tips really helped. I’ve been struggling so much trying to a balance full time work 40 hours a week along with trying to have a social life and professional learning on top of that. I need to prioritise my health and do what I love. Thank you
The increased production value on Thomas’ videos now compared to even a year ago is insane-absolutely impressive quality jump and doesn’t go unnoticed. Congratulations and keep it up!
It is an incredible video. When we get at least little bit conscious, we watch people, who encourage us to hard work (and only hard work). Later you realize that life is not only about work itself, and such videos are like gold since there are not so many of them compared to the motivational ones.
Wow. Best video to date. You really hit the nail on the head with so many points that are often obvious or already said but rarely tied together and connected in a way that helps change a mindset rather than just a helpful tip. Super motivating and empowering dude, all the examples made me think of my own examples in my life which help me to care and understand even further. Also thomas: video quality already exceeds that of some hollywood feature films and gets 100% better each time.
