When you see her perform this song now live, you will see how it has evolved and she definitely adds to it. There’s a whole other ending that way more exciting.
Stevie Nicks was a great vocalist and songwriter. But let's not forget that Lindsey Buckingham was all that, plus one of the most underrated guitarists in Rock and Roll history.
Mick Fleetwood is one of the great rock drummers of all time. He never fails to have interesting grooves and great fills. Nothing flashy, just perfection.
One of the things I love about Fleetwood Mac at this time was that with all the obvious talent (and ego) they could channel all that talent into serving the song.
The original Fleetwood Mac was a British blues band. When that broke up Mick looked around to put together a new band and was looking for a studio in LA. The engineer let him listen to some tracks, one of which had demos by Lindsey and Stevie. The rest, they say, is history.
Everything you say is true, albeit, you forgot to mention the middle years of the band,,when they did the transition from heavy blues to more mainstream, rock and roll, Bob Welch was instrumental in leading the charge, when he decided to leave is when Mick luckily heard Lindsay’s guitar track, from B/N. And asked him to join, he brought along Stevie, and the rest is history
Stevie said gold dust was her growing addiction to cocaine which got so bad she burned a hoke in her nose. The album is essentially a perfect album, and this is my favorite song on it. Rarely mentioned, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood and Peter Green all met abd came out of John Mayall's Blues Breakers (not the rare part, the next is). John was the only one who played in the band with Peter's predecessor, Eric Clapton. So Eric leaves to form Cream and a year or do later, these three firm Fleetwood Mac. Also. Though the Mac refers to John, he was the second bassist as he didn't join right away.
Lots of great rock chicks from this era and the next: Tanya Donelly from Belly, Johnette Napolitano from Concrete Blonde, Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star, Kendra Smith from Opal, Joan Jett and Lita Ford from The Runaways, also Christine McVie from Fleetwood Mac. I also like Claudine Longet and Astrud Gilberto from the '60s.
I'm pretty sure she's wallowing in depression and self loathing on this one. She's talking about cocaine and debauchery and broken relationships, which is what they had going on at the time. Great review. You grasped it well. Buckingham and the rhythm section are so damn good and stay within the song so well. Total professionals.
This album rumors is widely regarded as one of those perfect rock music albums. Every song on it is a gem. I wish you could just work your way through it and check them all out. And while the album before this might not be considered that complete, it was incredibly good as well with some big radio hits from it but it just feels good like a warm blanket.
This record was one of a few on repeat during my last 2 years of being a teenager. It had just come out. And I was a new mom. They've remained one of my fav bands over all these 55 some years. 😂 Love ya all. Have a great day❤
Stevie was really good at writing songs that conveyed moods and feelings, setting an atmosphere. Songs like Dreams, Rhiannon, Gypsy, Sara......they have been described as dream like and haunting
The first real rock show I saw was Deep Purple and Fleetwood Mac in '72. They've been a great band forever. Mick Fleetwood and John McVie have been the rhythm section of that band since 1967. That's why they're so locked in. You really ought to play the whole album. It's an all timer, a hall of fame gem of a record.
Stevie was splitting up with Lindsey, John McVie was divorcing Christine and Mick was going through his own relationship problems when they made this album, and the emotional overload they all were going through brought out their best abilities and the end result was this perfect blockbuster album with every song a treasure to enjoy. Some people don't know it but their 1975 album that came out just before it titled simply "FLEETWOOD MAC - Fleetwood Mac" (the first with Stevie and Lindsey) is another great work of theirs that did not achieve the same fame, but IMO it is just as worthy of it. The Opening track MONDAY MORNING with the late Christine McVie singing gets you going from the start. Stevie's monster hits RHIANNON and LANDSLIDE both came from that one. A worthy addition to any record collection.
Monday Morning is Lindsey. That along with Rhiannon, Landslide & I'm So Afraid were already written and arranged for their 2nd BN album - but they had no takers for another record contract which is why they joined FM. The self titled while overshadowed by Rumours was Warners biggest selling album at the time though it took over a year of touring and radio play before it hit #1.
Hey young man i have 2 daughters also they are 28 and 31 now with there own families but they still call me daddy. Thats love they give back for the love i gave and still give. Love them always. Peace
This track offers sufficient warning to not allow oneself to become hypnotized and captured by any substance....and how very small and empty your world becomes
Stevie is quoted as saying the song is about cocaine, but it also sounds that a lot of it is also about the break up with Lindsey. It’s rather darkly melancholic. Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful…and that she was; still is.
Thank you for reacting to this song!! One of my favorites on Rumors. There is a live version of The Chain that is fun to watch just to see the how Stevie & Lindsey react to each other.
You mention "wanting it to go longer". 4 years later, Bob Welch (Fleetwood Mac's guitarist before Nicks/Buckingham joined) was playing a solo concert...Stevie, Mick Fleetwood & Christine McVie joined him on stage & did an impromptu version of Gold Dust Woman. Worth checking out. ua-cam.com/video/6KTtS-sQzwA/v-deo.html
They were severely limited by album space for this record, and there was at least one song that was cut because of that reason. They had the talent and minds (and drugs) to expand upon any of these songs, and make them 'explode' without it being repetitious. It just didn't fit into their particular genre and industry limits at the time.
This is a great, famous, highly acclaimed album. But, then there’s the icing on the cake: A real live soap opera is taking place members Stevie Nicks and her husband Lindsey Buckingham. I shouldn’t say it like that. These are two people going through the pain of a troubled, and ultimately doomed relationship. What I really meant when I said the icing on the cake, refers to the songs being played out like a reality show. This came out when I was a junior in high school. It has never lost its impact.
after you have listened to Joni (original) and Judy (cover), you should also listen to a cover version of the song with a great singer: Gov't Mule - "Gold Dust Woman" ft. Grace Potter - Mountain Jam VI - 6/4/10 ua-cam.com/video/A13tUxH09SI/v-deo.html
Good reaction actually Stevie Nicks was a big abuser of cocaine that's the Gold Dust cuz it's so expensive however she did and she got older quit the habit❤
As it was Peter Greens band and he picked the name from two band members …they kept the name but not the spirit of the band the original was far superior in my view Black Magic Woman /Albatros/oh well/green manalishi/man of the world etc
Rhiannon live from Midnight Special show in 1976!!
Lindsey Buckingham is always underrated as a guitarist. His fills and licks and hooks are as good as any. ✌️❤️🎶
And better than most
haunting guitar phrases , Lindsey is a musicians guitarist
When you see her perform this song now live, you will see how it has evolved and she definitely adds to it. There’s a whole other ending that way more exciting.
Lindsey & Christine’s vocal harmonies is what I treasure most about this band.
Nothing flashy, just perfection.
also hell of a jazz percussionist
One of the things I love about Fleetwood Mac at this time was that with all the obvious talent (and ego) they could channel all that talent into serving the song.
The album is so full of singles it could as well be thought of as a greatest hit album.
A very good observation.
Stevie at her very best!
"That bass .." yup - you wouldn't believe who John McVie, Christine Perfect (McVie) and Mick Fleetwood played with in the day. Master musicians.
The original Fleetwood Mac was a British blues band. When that broke up Mick looked around to put together a new band and was looking for a studio in LA. The engineer let him listen to some tracks, one of which had demos by Lindsey and Stevie. The rest, they say, is history.

Lindsey Buckingham is a phenomenal guitarist and vocalist. Check out Big Love live.
Absolutely!
Anyone else feel like this song takes place in the old west ? So atmospheric 🔥🔥🔥🎩
Stevie said gold dust was her growing addiction to cocaine which got so bad she burned a hoke in her nose.

One of the best records ever🤘
I've always loved that song.
The sounds, instrumentation and overall spatial production is beyond criticism....a 10+

This whole album is great. The Chain is a favorite
The high hat you admire was from Mick Fleetwood. Probably the most underestimated drummer in history.
This record was one of a few on repeat during my last 2 years of being a teenager. It had just come out. And I was a new mom. They've remained one of my fav bands over all these 55 some years. 😂 Love ya all. Have a great day❤
Rumours - Classic rock at its best.
Stevie did a nice job of closing out this album. She is such the poet.
I think I had a rumours T-shirt in 1978 ;-)
How can one woman be so gorgeous and have such a gorgeous singing voice?
Stevie was really good at writing songs that conveyed moods and feelings, setting an atmosphere. Songs like Dreams, Rhiannon, Gypsy, Sara......they have been described as dream like and haunting

My favourite track off the album.
Hey young man i have 2 daughters also they are 28 and 31 now with there own families but they still call me daddy. Thats love they give back for the love i gave and still give. Love them always. Peace

Duuuuude! Find “The Dance” their reunion tour, 1997, amazing
For me their best track.
Their music could only be classified as "Sensory Overload"!
Superb album, quality through and through.
This song was written by Stevie describing herself through her relationship with lindsey, and her Cocaine use!
Told ya to check this stuff out! YAY! ☮️❤️
check out Rhiannon (live, 1976). So different from the studio version, Stevie in her element.
Lindsey on acoustic and electric guitar and Dobro.
My wife asked for a divorce in 1979 this song still brings that time right back
Check out, “Holes”, version………
Find a live version of Big Love and you will see GOD MODE by Lindsay Buckingham.
You need to review The Dance concert video
Hell of a way to close out any album, let alone one as good as "Rumours"
give rhiannon a listen off the same album
Nope, it was on the previous album, the one just called "Fleetwood Mac" -- the first with Stevie and Lindsay.
Yep I agree really good closing song for the album
You mention "wanting it to go longer". 4 years later, Bob Welch (Fleetwood Mac's guitarist before Nicks/Buckingham joined) was playing a solo concert...Stevie, Mick Fleetwood & Christine McVie joined him on stage & did an impromptu version of Gold Dust Woman. To appreciate Lindsey check out Big Love from The Dance.
The Chain was the climax song.
Lindsey Buckingham can get more mileage out of one note than anybody else ever.

I have your shirt!

Sometimes she howls.
Lyndsay and Stevie had a breakup and she had affair with mick. Rumor had it Stevie so much coke that destroyed the cartilage in her nose.
The live version of this from The Dance concert is better, darker and more moody
Stevie damaged her septum from using white powder.
As it was Peter Greens band and he picked the name from two band members …they kept the name but not the spirit of the band the original was far superior in my view Black Magic Woman /Albatros/oh well/green manalishi/man of the world etc
Cocaine, Stevie Nicks had a real problem silver spoon sometimes is what you snorted with. Small spoon.
Great arrangement, but, this only works with Stevie Nicks singing
Not the real Fleetwood Mac
A lot of bands changed and evolved over time. I wouldn't say that they no longer existed. You sound like you preferred the original lineup.
How so?
To me and most people it's the real Fleetwood Mac
@@alrivers2297 I agree!
It's the Fleetwood Mac that took over the music world of the late 70's.
