Crazy how close this thing is to my $25 Moonman C1. Almost identical in every way except the Moonman doesn't have a feed collar. The feed and nib just friction fit into the section.
Uh so if you look in the forums. Newton actually talked about it. The shinobi and c1 is actually not newtons or moonmans design. Its actually from a newtons client who ordered a custom pen. So there you go.
Nothing like having a fountain pen made specifically for you. I have had four made for me during my pen collecting days. Many members of Fountain Pen Network have had pens made for them, and there have been some rare beauties which have been shown. There are some true skilled pensmiths to be found.
+russianwolf1972 The USPS shows no mercy. I could not believe that picture. It shows he has a pretty solid method for getting the pens safely to their new homes.
There are a few minor differences, the question I have is how much has the C1 actually increasing interest in the Shinobi and thus increased orders for it? It has a many month waiting list, are buyers of the C1 more or less likely to commit to the cost and wait? As quick as everyone is to hate on the "ommage" I'm willing to bet that replica has been very profitable for Shawn indeed. Maybe too even much.
You're on a fountain pen video, on a channel called "Fountain Pen Day", in a fountain pen-using community... and you're trying to start shit. "Fuck logic," am I right?
Yep. JoWo is one of the biggest manufacturers, but after they get shipped out and tuned by the respective companies, they will produce a different writing feel. All my JoWo nibs from different companies write with different amounts of feedback and smoothness.
+Torxit It's 2 things, the position of the microphone and it is a cursive italic nib. A regular Fine, Medium or Broad would be much quieter. But you hear it more due to the microphone.
I think the major problem with all these pens is, that they do not have inner caps. then if the pen is closed, bit of shaking, and drops of ink finish in the interior of the pen cap. it is just a matter of time when the spoiled ink reaches the threading of the cap... and this is the end as once the ink reaches the threading it starts to stain your fingers and all other things around. and this is the reason why all mid to expensive range pens have inner cup. have a look e. g. twsbi 580al.
+TheDejfson While the inner caps catch the drops of ink that come about from time to time it takes away from the over all look of the pen. Not having the inner cap also allows for quick and easy clean up. With my TWSBI's to clean them I have to use the back end of a pencil to pop the inner cap out for cleaning. Plus the screw gets wet once the inner cap is removed while rinsing and will eventually rust, unless I take that apart as well for drying.
+Fountain Pen Day Thank you for checking, i really appreciate that. Thanks also for the great review and especially for eyedropping it! I have never been that big a demonstrator fan. I always thought they look a bit like bic ballpoints. But this pen eyedroppered is absolutely stunning.
Perhaps an off topic question but what is the paper you are using for the writing example. I think it would be great to practice japanese characters on it. ps: I love the pen, but so far i am still `doing research' on what 's my favorite pen. shape and weight before i commit to custom builds. But if and when.... i'd love to see a transparant sepia coloured pen body.
+Wim Tammenga Sorry, I don't know why I keep forgetting today the paper I use. It is 90g Clairefontaine French ruled paper and the spiral young version works great for taking notes and it has a good balance of not being to porous so inks that shade show up well and the dry time is not to bad at all. Best thing for research is get to a pen meet or pen show and try as many pens as you can.
+Fountain Pen Day Thank you very much. I don't know when i will have the chance for a pen meet but i do know we have a penshow in the Netherlands, Eindhoven. So i'm definately lined up for that.
It would be worthwhile to go for sure. You also have P.W. Akkerman-Amsterdam B.V. about an hour and half drive for you. EXCELLENT store to visit. Paul Rutte is super nice.
+Ming Lee It is 90g Clairefontaine French ruled paper and the spiral young version works great for taking notes and it has a good balance of not being to porous so inks that shade show up well and the dry time is not to bad at all.
Thank you FPD. And how is the paper quality compare to Rhodia? I'm really interested in finding good quality "Seyes" (French-ruled) paper because being born and raised in Vietnam, a former French colony, we are very familiar with this type of paper ruling. It's school notebook standard here. We even have a hybrid of grid seyes ruling. However, most of the paper available on the market is of rather poor quality or quite rough. Easily feathering, serious bleed through, too rough and hard.
+Ming Lee LATE reply... sorry about that. The clairefontaine has a good balance. The Rhodia, love the DOTS, is fantastic as well but I find it is a little more glassy. Any oils from my hands sits on the surface of the paper and will interrupt the ink flow. Neither of these papers will suffer from feathering.
+Rob P. Funny you mention it. I just cleaned it to change the ink out 2 nights ago. The pen cleaned pristine. I did need to use a toothbrush around the threads where the silicone was. People forget sometimes when they see staining there that it is really the silicone holding ink that you see and not the pens body. BUT it did not stain at all and the Shinobi is now full of Kon-peki and writing wonderfully.
Have you seen the new Moonman C1? It looks very similar to your gorgeous Shinobi.
Shinobi??? This looks exactly like the Moonman C1 pen. Literally exactly.
I am still confused which one came out first, Moonman C1 or this Shinobi. But yes, they are the same pen, exactly same.
Deb Talukdar The shinobi came out long before the moonman, I do believe the moonman c1 is a replica.
Shit... i was going to buy c1 and i learned it is a clone of shinobi...

This is an exquisite pen. Can you please tell me how much it costs? Thanks.
The pen is identical to one of the moon man pens not sure if that is a good thing
Wow, that is GORGEOUS.
Shawn just posted a picture on Instagram of a USPS crushed cup........ the pen was undamaged. He is sending the owner a new cup.
+russianwolf1972 The USPS shows no mercy. I could not believe that picture. It shows he has a pretty solid method for getting the pens safely to their new homes.
so this was the Moonman C1 beta :S
Awesome review + pen
Thanks FPD
This is on my wish list. So pretty.
did the 100 year nib idea worked? i have one and i want to do the same with the moonman c1.
Doesn't acrylic absorb tinted stuff like inks? Also, doesn't acrylic attract scratches like a LOT??
So cool.
It looks exactly like the Moonman C1, so now I know where Moonman got it's "inspiration".

I already spent about $300 on a knife and I'm willing to spend the same amount for a pen
I have yet to find a pen that is the equivalent of a sebenza haha
Sam Wells thanks man :)

Better to be a nerd than a broke reject
@@InklanUtterfield the fountain pen community is the weirdest, most toxic community I've come across.
would recommend using manual focusing.... will not be in and out as much, great review... thanks
Also nice ruling on that paper. What is it pls.?
Very nice. I believe Goulet uses the same company for their nibs if I'm not mistaken.
Yep. JoWo is one of the biggest manufacturers, but after they get shipped out and tuned by the respective companies, they will produce a different writing feel. All my JoWo nibs from different companies write with different amounts of feedback and smoothness.
Which size is this? The small, medium, large, or oversize?
Is it just me or does it sound scratching during the writing samples? How do you feel about it though?
+Torxit It's 2 things, the position of the microphone and it is a cursive italic nib. A regular Fine, Medium or Broad would be much quieter. But you hear it more due to the microphone.
Great review, excellent pen. See you in Philly.
Is it moonman C1?
hi, could i ask how much does it cost? Thanks

after some long time use, does it burp ?
Gorgeous pen. Is this the slim or the medium?
+Joe Martorell I had to email Shawn to find out as I did not even know there were "sizes". He said mine is a Small .50"

+Dhiren Shah Akkerman #5 Shocking Blue.
2 + year waiting list ?

Great review!
where we can bought this Pen please (i'm french people sorry)
There is a link in the description you can click
Also, I believe this one is partially customized, so you may find a similar one, but not one exactly the same.
That was the most theatric opening sequence I've seen on a fountain pen review 🤣
Nice pen! Great review
Can someone please identify the bottle of ink he is using? Just the maker is fine.
Also, can anyone recommend any easy filling bottles of ink?
Akkerman ink. Vanness Pens sells it online.
What is the paper used in the review may I ask?

very nice video, thx!
Great video….looks like my Moonman from China for under $50.
I hope the shocking blue didn't stain that beautiful pen. Beautiful ink but it seems to like to stain demos.

Thanks for the update. It is a stunning pen, my diabolical plan is to find a vintage flexy Waterman music nib and have Shawn work his magic.
stunning craftmanship
Moonman clone ??
For 300 dollars China will make 30 of these with better quality. And in case you want replicas they can make it under 50 cents and sell at 1 dollars.
Well now there is one. Moonman c1..
These pens are over priced.
