In the defense of the N1. Yes it always exploded but the explosions where kinda intentional. The USSR had a completely different way of testing their rockets. Instead of building complex test-stands and similar facilities they just put one together let it fly (if it even got of the pad) watched when it exploded fixed the problem let it fly again waited for the explosion and so on. It in typical USSR style the simplest approach. For the N1 they actually planned 12 explosions (test flights) before ever getting to the moon or even to Orbit. At 14:20 you basically described how Igla docking system worked. With it, both spacecraft were auto-aligned to each other, as opposed to modern systems where only one of spacecraft performs maneuvers.
Gotta love making the N1 in KSP! I tried to do it in stock but I ended up using some mods for larger fuel tanks for my video, never thought about using Fairings!
lmao i have been using that docking method since before ive found your channel.... i always just assumed thats how everyone did it... xD ...clearly I am entitled to half of the royalties... lol Wonderful video as always
Technically speaking there is no evidence that blok B of N1 wasn't the most reliable stage in history of spaceflight. It's just that the hilarious amount of engines on blok A was poorly designed-for, so it never got the chance to light second stage.
Just a slight warning: The Lowne method of docking only works if the docking ports are in line with the axis of the root parts. There is a bug where off-axis docking ports don't auto-align with target properly.
Dear Matt, the Buran and the Energia rocket were stored in a hanger but the hanger collapsed in 2002 because of bad maintenance killing some workers and destroying both the orbiter and the launcher. PS. watching your videos is why I bought KSP and I love the game. Keep doing what you are doing!!!
love your videos matt, still wondering if your gonna do space engineers heard a guy on twitter say space engineers is minecraft and kerbal space program together
Just wanted to point out, one Buran is actually in a museum in Germany: speyer.technik-museum.de/de/spaceshuttle-buran It's not a very good museum, just some rich dude that collected allot of random stuff and made half an theme park out of it. But there you have it, it can be visited, with some rather cool vehicles.
your way of docking is literally the first and only time i've used to dock something and that was literally in the tutorial....so everyone else is not very smart for not realising this before you. So you are right, it is the way the devs intended
The buran shuttle is actually easier to recreate in stock than the regular shuttle, because the regular srbs are puny compared to reality, and the vectors have a thrust similar to that of reality, which makes no sense, but means that it’s easier to use liquid fueled boosters, like the buran.
I love the Soviet rockets because those designs are actually insane. It probably didn't help that the three most important men in the program hated each other with the heat of rocket exhaust.
Engines ignite before the previous stage separate - hence the truss decoupler. This saves on pumps and weight by using the accelerating to push the fuel to the engines, where it's needed.
for the real missions, they would use the lunokhod rover to choose a landing spot, land a spare lander there, then do the mission, the spare lander was in case the one used to get there didn't have enough fuel to get back
