  • Mockups can be used to effectively simulate and visualize graphic design applications. i’ve been using this technique for years to showcase ideas and how they work in urban environments.I’ve been experimenting a lot with open source design tools for a few years now. I find the idea of breaking away from dependencies on big players like Adobe or Apple and exploring the multiplicity of unusual solutions exciting. For my animated mockups, I tried various open source software (Natron and Blender) and quickly reached their limits. Both solutions are too complex for my simple use case and would have required quite a few more hours of learning.So I decided to develop my own tool with Processing. The first prototype took me a few hours of development time. I intentionally designed the tool with many constraints and wanted to position the motifs only flat and in color on black and white photographs found on unsplash.com. This was a conscious choice and with a little effort it could definitely be refined. For me it was also an aesthetic decision. In this way the result looks honest: it doesn’t even try to look as if it were real.

    Reminds me a lot of how 100rabbits approaches design. For those who don't know they're a two person author/illustrator/indie game dev/software dev team who live and travel by boat. Because of that they have super strict hardware and power usage limitations. They often make simple creative tools out of necessity and with super tight restrictions on app size and resource usage, then put them on itchio for others to use. Especially with how easy it is to set up a simple but functional gui in processing it's wild how much lower the bar is to creating custom tools has become. Phenomenal content as always, loving the online classes as well! Perhaps in the future you could make one specifically on creative tool making for more advanced users. I could see that making some seriously dangerous young designers if properly motivated :).

      Chace, thank you very much for this great comment! I definitively will check out the 1000rabits thing. I see that most designers think with tight restrictions in terms of the software they use. Processing has made the process of building own tools so much easier and this is yet not recognized enough!

      @@timrodenbroekerHello! please tell me how you can implement styles from ".css: transform-style: preserve-3d;
      transform: rotateX(var(--move-y)) rotateY(var(--move-x));" in processing
