  • Honouring Sasha Lennan, my dear friend, with this beautiful and profound song that I learnt and got lost with on my travels over the years.
It’s a song written by Violeta Parra, a Chilean singer, artist and revolutionary woman who also took her life from a broken heart. She wrote this song when she was 16 years old.
The words of her song mean:
“Thanks to life that gave me so much,
It gave me two beams of light (my eyes) that when opened,
I can perfectly distinguish black from white,
And the furthest star high in the sky,
And from all the multitudes, the one I love.
Thanks to life, that gave me so much.
It gave me an ear that, in all of its width
Records- night and day-crickets and canaries,
    Hammers, turbines, bricks, storms,
And the tender voice of my beloved.
Thanks to life, that gave me so much.
It gave me sound and the alphabet,
And with them the words that I think and declare:
"Mother," "Friend," "Brother" and the light shining
The route of the soul that I am loving.
Thanks to life, that gave me so much.
It gave me the ability to walk when my feet were tired.
With them I have walked through cities and puddles
Valleys and deserts, mountains and plains
To your house, to your street and your patio.
Thanks to life, that gave me so much.
It gave me a heart, that when it aches,
It stretches like a canvas on a frame.
When I see the fruit of the human mind,
When I see the good so far from the bad,
When I see in your deep clear eyes.
Thanks to life, that gave me so much.
It gave me laughter and it also gave me the tears.
So that I can distinguish happiness and pain -
The two materials that form my songs,
And your song, which is the same song.
And everyone's song, which is my own very song.
    Thanks to life…”
I love you and I will miss you.
    Arohanui e hoa.
