Hi Amy! I'm Molly, from Florida, USA. I am SUCH a newbie. I just got my first handpan drum. No idea what I'm doing. I have no musical skills. But YOU are the BEST teacher!!! So thank you! I have a question--- I am legally blind, nearly totally blind, and I am wondering, what kind of stand is your drum sitting upon? Is it on your lap? (I can't sit cross-legged on the floor anymore, I'm too old!), and the little stand that came with mine is about one foot tall... Is it easier to stand and play? Or put the drum on, say, a living room table, to play? Or is there a special stand I can buy? I'm so scared I'm going to knock it over, or drop it, dent it, ..... Thank you!

Amy, I just love the way you teach; it seems so natural to you and you find perfect ways to engage beginners (like myself) to train and practice drills that will make our playing better! Your passion for the handpan shows through in all of your presentations! I am a 66 year old, awaiting my very first handpan now. I saved up for three years after hearing one some time ago and have finally bought one and it's on its way to me. I've never played a musical instrument in my life, and said to myself, it's on the bucket list, and I'll do it one day before my time is up! I always loved the sound of steel drum music growing up, so I guess when the handpan was created, it was a perfect match for me. I have been trying to practice some of your beginner exercises now, sitting with a big gym ball that i use for core training, in front of me, pretending it's my handpan and then I go to work, trying to get my hands and fingers more coordinated for when the real thing arrives. Hopefully, I'll be better able to translate the work into some playable fun when it comes! Thank you so much for the inspiration and help; I'm entertaining a possible new dream at this juncture in my life - being a 70 year old busker playing my handpan for the masses in some city square in Melbourne (Australia, where I live) or maybe some other public area around the world!!! :)

Wow, thanks for sharing your story! And I'm glad the videos are helping. You're doing the right thing in practicing before your pan arrives. It will make the arrival day all the more special 😊 I did the same thing too, playing on anything I could in the run up. I'm super excited for you, and so happy to be a small part of your handpan journey 💚

Nice to know I am not alone in my methods. Thank you Amy for sharing your amazing artistic talent, impressive tutorials and infectious love of music and education. Mike

Thanks Amy, so much to play with! I like to add ghost notes to one handed scales with the otherwise unused hand. Requires you to navigate crossing hands in a way that feels relevant.

I wish this were one I could make more use of. As a bassist, I kinda have no reason to go flipping my bass around and confusing myself with upside down strings. =P Of course, I watch anyways. =D You are on it with that control, for sure. Closing my eyes, I could not tell when you switched hands.

Hehe, but it is fun to switch it over sometimes! Have you tried? Properly messes with my head when I turn my guitar around, but I know people who play upside down left handed! Bonkers

    • @somegeezer

I have tried for a laugh. The upside down strings are the hardest part. I'm not good at playing left hand either, but it definitely just feels like first playing and I could with practice. My right hand doing fretting is surprisingly alright. If the strings were right way round, I wouldn't be the worst at it. =P
