Excellent instructions on how to open a Walkman case and belt replacement. Thank you. Respectfully, I’d caution using lithium grease on plastic components as it’s petroleum based and will eventually attack and partially dissolve some plastics. I use silicone based grease on plastics and lithium on metal. Thank you again for your informative post.

Is it necessary to put grease at all? I’ve seen many videos and no one ever suggested or mentioned using it, would like to see a video of you to do a close up to know how to

I lubricate lightly with a silicone based lubricant. I lightly lubricate the transport mechanism, metal transports are more durable but can wear aggressively if not lubricated. Plastic transports wear less but the trade off is that they are prone breakage. Lubricate gear teeth when stationary, run the rears to distribute the lubricant. Use a sponge applicator if you have one. If none then, pull about 70% of the cotton bud off a Q-Tip, press your fingers against the tip and rotate until the fibers are compressed, that will limit stray fibers from contaminating your gears. Additionally, lubricate any gears that rub together. Less is more as you don’t want lubricants migrating to belts. Remember no petroleum based lubricants as they will attack plastic and rubber parts. Good luck brother.

I’ve used this grease on tape decks, walkman units and turn tables for decades. Just use it sparingly. Don’t glob it on and don’t contaminate devices. Use your knowledge and common sense. You’ll be fine. Good Luck Chris.

Just fixed a Sony Walkman similar to this one. I needed to know how to route the belt because the original (pile of goo) was nowhere near where it should have been when I opened it. This saved me time figuring it out. Thank you!

I salvaged an old am/fm cassette Sony Walkman (with MEGABASS! lol) from a Goodwill Outlet bin today and I can hear the internals going, but the tapes won't play. I bet it's just a busted belt. Thanks for the informative video!

Thanks for the video. I used a Q-tip and silicon spray lubricant on the same gear part on my Walkman WM-FX45, and it mostly got rid of the wavy noise. It's not 100% gone, but it's much better than before.

There are literally tabs inside the tape compartment that you push on with a screwdriver to get the thing to come apart. You don't have to just snap it open and risk breaking the tabs.

Good info... I found online service manual for my XM-FX177 that indicates those tabs, but I found they did nothing until I did the same first forced opening like @2:39 via the battery pack, then they engaged (or I guess dis-engaged is more correct). The interesting thing from the service manual that helped after this is that it indicated working in counter-clockwise direction, starting from corner with "W" for walkman printed on front: no force required (maybe as cassette compartment tabs helped by this point so direction unimportant?). My model also has 2 external, one internal screw, and some "flexible board" circuit connectors that I hope will be as easy to insert as they were to pull out.

And second thing he did not played Walkman, he used too much small belt, this will reduce motor speed and increase battery consumption.
