If Valve tried Steam Machines now I think it would work. Before it was like 'why?' but with the advancements of Steam and then their Steam Deck they proved they can have a console like experience with, um, a console. As a PC gamer and a Linux user when they announced the Steam Deck I was like 'yeah, right' but they have made it a pretty seamless console like experience.

First off, thanks for watching! And second, really good points! It would likely be an all AMD affair, since nVidia is not so keen on opening up their drivers atm, but that isn’t a bad thing (I’m not so brand loyal) - a boy could dream is happens in the form of AMD Project Quantum ;)

I think Valve could do it today with a powerful, custom SoC from AMD that competes with the PS5 in terms of performance and price. That would be a great machine to get new people into PC gaming.

In a future build, you can try using laptop antenna instead of the small external ones. To make it work, you'd have to take out the wifi module from the MB, and clip on the laptop antenna wires direcly to the Wifi module, then route the patches for the laptop antenna somewhere on the case. I did that for my own personal HTPC to get rid of the external antenna, given that the external ones can make it harder to pack a PC from place to place (and sometimes the connector can come loose from contantly connecting and disconnecting the antenna), and that has worked really well for me on my end!

I was lucky enough to be chosen for one of these back in the day, and I still use the case to this day! The simple and durable design still holds up for the most part. I tend to struggle finding parts that work well specifically for this case so this video was actually a great guide for me even though there a few differences(like the gpu bracket issue). I always have to remove the bracket just to get a gpu to fit. Overall great video and nice build!

I'm one of the lucky 300 as well, and still have it though sadly it's been sitting unused for the last couple of years. I've been planning an upgrade and was just going to skip the GPU and go with a Ryzen 7 8700G (the iGPU on it performs better than the OG GTX 780, at least in benchmarks). But seeing a 3080 fitting in that space, maybe I can figure out a way to get an RX 6800 or 7800XT in there. Plan is to use SteamOS if Valve ever releases it to general PCs, or otherwise go with something like Bazzite or Nobara Deck Edition, so I'd need an AMD GPU for that to work properly.

@standupg4m3r First of all, the fact that we can install a full size "big boy" graphics card in such a small footprint is a big advantage to me, building a powerful VCR sized steam machine is awesome. Also the fact that it can be built using a fairly small 3D printer is nice to have (I own a modified ender 3), not everyone can own and afford large printers!

One tip I'd give is to use less heatserts. Plenty of your holes, such as the screws which secured the USB front IO, are clearly never intended to be undone through the case's life and therefore don't need heatserts. I only use heatserts for threads which will be screwed and unscrewed multiple times, such as motherboard standoffs. Permanent installations thread directly into the plastic to save time and money during construction.

    • @standupg4m3r
      @standupg4m3r  8 днів тому

I fully agree with you and thanks for watching! But in my videos, no one sees how many times I have to re-screw and screw for different shots or retakes. And for me to make two different versions of files that I charge $0.00 for? Nope.

@@standupg4m3r that's absolutely fascinating insight into the difference between designing directly for the end user versus designing with the middle step of content creation. I'd never even considered the impact of retakes on thread wear and how that affects the practicality of heatserts.

The prototype machine is a high-end, high-performance box, built out of off-the-shelf PC parts. It is also fully upgradable, allowing any user to swap out the GPU, hard drive, CPU, even the motherboard if you really want to. Apart from the custom enclosure, anyone can go and build exactly the same machine by shopping for components and assembling it themselves. And we expect that at least a few people will do just that. I remember being a steam machine evangelist. I bought a Alienware x51 and Alienware Alpha because they seemed like the future, they were but the tech wasn't there yet. Glad to say now though that I think with the upcoming hardware generation upgrades and things like the ASUS ROG NUC we can accomplish Steam Machines that perform well with custom hardware and a fully baked Steam OS now.

Great project I’d like to create a similar case and own a prusa mini with a smaller bed. Could you detail the way you cut your pieces to glue them later on ? Was it in CAD or directly in the slicer ?

Thanks for watching! I did mine directly in CAD, since I was able to control when the jigsaw pattern ended and what shape the lobes took. But in all honesty, with the hassle this method resulted in, I bet the Prusa slicer division methods would work just as well (if not better). When I reach the 6k subscribers I will upload both the cut up pattern I used with 0.25mm tolerance and one without - since every printer will behave differently.

The original Steam Machine didn't actually remove the GPU backplate. Instead they bent the top part to be flat for mounting and then cut off the bottom part that would interfere with the motherboard. This can be seen in the teardown iFixit did

    • @standupg4m3r

Hey thanks for watching. ifixit page is what I used for reference - and clearly they (Valve) removed the stock bracket and made a custom one: guide-images.cdn.ifixit.com/igi/IsParfAoCQKLY2Op.full
Notice the tapped punch out for mounting, which does not exist on the stock bracket: www.zotac.com/us/product/graphics_card/gtx-780 - the stock bracket also has wavy slots while the custom made one for the Steam Machine feature straight slots.

The outside looks really good, apart from that left edge of the front next to the power buton area - you could've try to polish it and paint that as well. I feel like this is breaking the effect.
Apart from that - on the inside there were various partitions for separating and routing the air flow. Good work nevertheless, especially since you've figured out how to print it in smaller parts.

The original Steam Machine had some users putting it on its side (ignoring how it will compromise thermals even more based on the side you choose), and I think it was driven by the negative of hori-cases and how much foot print they take up. I’m guessing this drives lower demand and less attention this niche form factor. But thank goodness for the few case manufacturers like Fractal and of course, 3D Printers! lol

I would try it if I had a 92*25mm fan… but still happy with how well it sucks air in unimpeded with the ducts; I find fans perform worse and are louder when they have little space in front or behind them.
